A Review of Perovskites Solar Cell Stability

Abstract In this review, the factors influencing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is emphasized. The PCE of PSCs has remarkably increased from 3.8% to 23.7%, but on the other hand, poor stability is one of the main facets that creates a huge barrier in the commercialization of PSCs. Herein, a concise overview of the current efforts to enhance the stability of PSCs is provided; moreover, the degradation causes and mechanisms are summarized. The strategies to improve device stability are portrayed in terms of structural effects, a photoactive layer, hole‐ and electron‐transporting layers, electrode materials, and device encapsulation. Last but not least, the economic feasibility of PSCs is also vividly discussed.

Unveiling the Influence of Hot Carriers on Photovoltage Formation in Perovskite Solar Cells

The experimental and theoretical study of photovoltage formation in perovskite solar cells under pulsed laser excitation at 0.53 μm wavelength is presented. Two types of solar cells were fabricated on the base of cesium-containing triple cation perovskite films: (1) Csx(FA0.83MA0.17)(1−x)Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 and (2) Csx(FA0.83MA0.17)(1−x)Pb0.8Sn0.2(I0.83Br0.17)3. It is found that photovoltage across the solar cells consists of two components, U = Uph + Uf. The first one, Uph, is the traditional photovoltage arising due to laser radiation-induced electron-hole pair generation. The second one, Uf, is the fast component following the laser pulse and has a polarity opposite to that of Uph. It is shown that the fast photovoltage component results from the laser radiation-caused heating of free carriers. The transient photovoltage measurements show that the values of the fast component Uf are nearly the same in both types of perovskite solar cells. The magnitude of the traditional photovoltage of mixed Pb-Sn perovskite solar cells is lower than that of Pb-based cells.

A Novel Nucleation Inducer for Ultrathin Au Anodes in High Efficiency and Flexible Organic Optoelectronic Devices

Abstract Methyl‐terminated alucone films are prepared as a nucleation inducer by molecular layer deposition (MLD), increasing the surface free energy (SFE) to help the nucleation of Au electrodes. By controlling the surface groups of MLD alucone, the SFE of the films reach 93.8 dyne cm −1 , which is significantly larger than the 75.94 dyne cm −1 of commonly used wetting layer ZnS. As a result, Au films deposited on this novel nucleation inducer show a layered growth at a thickness of 5 nm, and thus exhibit high photoelectric performance and a bending life of more than 1500 times. When this high‐performance electrode is applied in organic optoelectronic devices, current efficiency enhancement of 24.4% and 12.7% are achieved in organic light‐emitting devices (OLEDs) and flexible perovskite light‐emitting devices (PLEDs), respectively. Also, the flexible PLED maintains 96.4% of the initial luminance after 1000 bends.

White Light-Emitting Devices Based on Inorganic Perovskite and Organic Materials

Perovskite-based materials have attracted considerable attention in photoelectric devices. In this paper, we report the one-step fabrication of spin-coated CsPbBr2.5I0.5 perovskite films doped with PAN (polyacrylonitrile) polymer. A red perovskite LED (PeLED) composite film was fabricated which featured a maximum luminance value of 657 cd/m² at 8 V. We fabricated white PeLEDs by combining hole transporting layer material emission, perovskite⁻polymer composite material PAN:CsPbBr2.5I0.5, and pure inorganic perovskite CsPbBr₃ as a luminescent layer. The maximum luminance of the device was 360 cd/m² at 7 V, and the color coordinate was (0.31, 0.36). We obtained an ideal white light-emitting device that paves the way for further development of white PeLEDs.

Surface Functionalization of a Graphene Cathode to Facilitate ALD Growth of an Electron Transport Layer and Realize High-Performance Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Graphene is a promising electrode for the flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs), whereas electron transport layer (ETL) oxides, prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD), render high performance in PSCs. However, the growth of ALD oxides on surface-inert graphene remains a challenging task. Herein, we demonstrate that a viscous precursor of molecular layer deposition (MLD) ethylene glycol (EG) endows active sites to the graphene surface by the strong van der Waals forces and realizes the ALD of high-performance oxides for next-generation flexible PSCs. The EG-functionalized graphene surface is utilized to deposit an ALD-ZnO film, which renders high transmittance, low-energy levels, and superior electron injection capability. Moreover, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of EG–graphene/ZnO-based PSCs is 133.9% higher than graphene/ZnO-based PSCs, and they retained 92.2% of the initial PCE after 1000 bending cycles. This method opens up alternate avenues to improve the flexible PSCs and other flexible optical electronics.

Processing and Preparation Method for High-Quality Opto-Electronic Perovskite Film

The key to improving the energy conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells lies in the optimization of the film morphology. The optical and electrical properties of the perovskite film, such as light absorption, carrier diffusion length, and charge transport, are all directly affected by the film morphology. Therefore, this review starts from the perovskite solar cells structure, and it summarizes the state-of-art perovskite film fabrication technologies and the caused film morphology to the performance perovskite solar cells. The spin coating method has an enormous waste of materials and only a small area of the device can be utilized. It is difficult to be used in commercial manufacturing. However, due to the high efficiency of this preparation method, it is irreplaceable in the initial research and development of perovskite materials, and so this method will be popular for a long time in the laboratory. Chemical vapor deposition and thermal vapor deposition have high technical requirements and a good repeatability of processing and manufacturing, and large-scale production can be realized. It may be the first technology to admit industrial application; the scratch coating method and slot-die have significant technical aspects. The similarity of the roll-to-roll manufacturing technology is also an efficient preparation method. Still, to achieve high-efficiency devices, it is necessary to consider the thickness control of each functional layer, and to find or prepare perovskite paste. Finally, we summarized the various fabrication processes and the prospects for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. We predict that to achieve the commercialization of perovskite solar cells, the existing fabrication technologies should be optimized and more studies should be conducted.

Recent Progress in Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

Tandem solar cells are widely considered the industry's next step in photovoltaics because of their excellent power conversion efficiency. Since halide perovskite absorber material was developed, it has been feasible to develop tandem solar cells that are more efficient. The European Solar Test Installation has verified a 32.5% efficiency for perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. There has been an increase in the perovskite/Si tandem devices' power conversion efficiency, but it is still not as high as it might be. Their instability and difficulties in large-area realization are significant challenges in commercialization. In the first part of this overview, we set the stage by discussing the background of tandem solar cells and their development over time. Subsequently, a concise summary of recent advancements in perovskite tandem solar cells utilizing various device topologies is presented. In addition, we explore the many possible configurations of tandem module technology: the present work addresses the characteristics and efficacy of 2T monolithic and mechanically stacked four-terminal devices. Next, we explore ways to boost perovskite tandem solar cells' power conversion efficiencies. Recent advancements in the efficiency of tandem cells are described, along with the limitations that are still restricting their efficiency. Stability is also a significant hurdle in commercializing such devices, so we proposed eliminating ion migration as a cornerstone strategy for solving intrinsic instability problems.

Progress of High‐Throughput and Low‐Cost Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

In recent years, the era of perovskites has experienced splendid development. Among perovskites, flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs) have received increasing attention due to their high efficiency, light weight, low cost, excellent flexibility, and low‐temperature solution processing ability. In the last decade, the power conversion efficiency of FPSCs has increased significantly from 2.62% to more than 20%. Herein, a succinct overview of the current endeavor to achieve low‐temperature FPSCs is provided. The recent developments, including flexible substrates, transparent conductive electrodes, perovskite absorbers, and device manufacturing methods, are vividly discussed. The strategies for enhancing the stability and flexibility of FPSCs are presented in terms of electrode materials, device encapsulation, and structural effects. Finally, the most encouraging and potential studies for the future of flexible PSCs are revealed.
