Rehabilitation of an abandoned limestone mine in the lower western Himalayas - impact assessment on vegetation development and floristic diversity.

Rehabilitation of mine spoiled areas through suitable bioengineering measures and allowing natural succession of vegetation to progress is an essential step towards ecosystem recovery. In this paper, the effect of such measures accompanied with protection of an abandoned limestone mine have been described. Development of vegetation and its phytosociological characteristics were compared with an adjoining but slightly disturbed natural forest situated in the lower sub-humid Himalayan region. In the rehabilitated area, an introduced species Leucaena leucocephal a, had the highest Importance Value Index (IVI) of 66.05, followed by a sedge species Eriophorum cosmosum (lVI 58.85) and Acacia catechu (IVI 51.85). The area also supported a significant growth of Thysaloena maxima and Saccharum spontaneum . In the adjoining non-mined forest, the highest IVI value was recorded for Corcorus laurifolius (55.98), followed by Mallotus phillipensis (47.55), Murraya koenigii (38.71) and Bauhinia retusa (37.02). These species, which are associates of Shorea robusta forests, are valuable fodder species in the region specially during the winters, and were, therefore, not harvested while timber yielding species like Shorea robusta and Toona ciliata are now totally absent from the area. Cluster analysis and ordination by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed distinct loading of plots along different axis due to an underlying edaphic gradient, external seeding and soil moisture availability. Diversity (H') of tree species in the natural forest was higher than the rehabilitated area, which otherwise had higher diversity values for shrubs and grasses. It is suggested that existing levels of biotic disturbances be restricted for some more time to provide an opportunity for late colonizers to establish themselves in the area.

Identification of areas vulnerable to soil erosion risk in India using GIS methods

Abstract. This paper attempts to provide information for policymakers and soil conservation planners in the form of district-wise soil erosion risk (SER) maps prepared for the state of Telangana, India. The SER values for each district were computed by extracting the information on grid-wise soil erosion and soil loss tolerance limit values existing on the country-scale in a GIS environment. The objectives of the study were to (i) identify the areas of the state with a high erosion risk, and (ii) identify areas with an urgent need of conservation measures. The results reveal that around 69 % of the state has a negligible risk of soil erosion above the tolerance limits, and does not call for immediate soil conservation measures. The remaining area (2.17 M ha) requires conservation planning. Four districts, viz. Adilabad, Warangal, Khammam, and Karimnagar are the most risk-prone with more than one-quarter of their total geographical areas showing net positive SER values. In order to obtain a clearer picture and categorize the districts based on their extent of vulnerability, weighted erosion risk values were computed. Adilabad, Warangal, and Khammam were identified as the worst-affected districts in terms of soil erosion, and therefore are in need of immediate attention of natural resource conservation.

Micropropagation is a promising technique for development of pathogen and virus free microtubers which can be used as better “potato seed” than those produced conventionally. Genetic stability and biosafety of such seeds is matter of concern before its consumption. Genetic fidelity of micropropagated microtubers of potato (Solanum tuberosum), developed as in vitro cultured pathogen free “potato seeds”, was evaluated using Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Nine arbitrary decamers were used to amplify DNA from in vivo control tuber and in vitro micropropagated microtubers to assess the genetic fidelity. RAPD profiles from all the micropropagated microtubers were monomorphic and similar to those of field grown control tubers. There was no detectable variation within the micropropagated microtubers which suggests its genetic stability.

Productive utilisation of non-arable lands through watershed management in the semi-arid regions of India.

Multiple benefits which could be derived over a short period of time, after adopting various practices of floriculture, horticulture and tree plantations, on non-arable lands, in the semi-arid zones of Southern India are presented in this paper. Jasmine ( Jasminium sambac Ait.) cultivation along river bank, is a profit-able activity, while application of DAP on grasses established over barren hill slopes, significantly increased dry matter yields. Tree plantations carried out along canal banks were better than those planted on hills, although tree survival on hill slopes was 40% and satisfactory.
