Evidence of space-charge conduction in a HgI2 crystal

The ac impedance method was used to deduce the bulk resistance from the complex impedance plane plots for 20-μm-thick HgI2 crystal. The bulk resistance was obtained as a function of temperature from 290 K down to 11 K. Two activation energies, ≂0.24(2) and 0.12(2) eV, were deduced above 170 K. Below this temperature, the bulk resistance decreased with decreasing temperature, indicating a space-charge-limited current conduction mechanism. The assumption of a uniform trap distribution and space-charge conduction gave 1013 cm−3 for trap density. The room-temperature charge carrier density was found to be 6×106 cm−3, much larger than the intrinsic free-electron density.

MÖSSBAUER EFFECT STUDIES OF Te COMPOUNDS

Isomer shifts (IS) and quadrupole splittings (QS) are reported for a number of Te compounds. When the isomer shifts for Te compounds are plotted against the isomer shifts for similar I compounds a roughly linear plot results for pairs of compounds which are both isoelectronic and isostructural. Pairs which are not isoelectronic but merely have similar chemical character deviate from the linear relation. For these similar compounds it is noted that the Te-X bonds are more ionic than the I-X bonds. We attempt to make this argument more quantitative and pursue a correlation found to exist between the quadrupole splitting and the isomer shift which is also found to apply to chemically dissimilar Te compounds.
