Improved Synthesis of Oligomeric Sulfone‐Based Phthalonitriles

An improved method has been developed to produce an oligomeric sulfonyl‐containing phthalonitrile with better processability. The oligomeric phthalonitrile monomer is prepared from the reaction of an excess amount of bisphenol A with 4‐(chlorophenyl)sulfone in the presence of a mixed base system (NaOH/K 2 CO 3 ) in a dimethylsulfoxide/toluene solvent mixture, followed by end‐capping with 4‐nitrophthalonitrile in a two‐step, one‐pot reaction. This phthalonitrile resin exhibits lower viscosities than previously reported systems for molding into various shapes. After being thermally cured to yield crosslinked polymers, this sulfonyl‐based polymer demonstrates superb mechanical properties and thermo‐oxidative stability, absorbs less than 1.0 weight percent water, and maintains good dielectric properties. image

Failure of classical elasticity in auxetic foams

Poisson's ratio, ν, was measured for four materials, a rubbery polymer, a conventional soft foam, and two auxetic foams. We find that for the first two materials, having ν ≥ 0.2, the experimental determinations of Poisson's ratio are in good agreement with values calculated from the shear and tensile moduli using the equations of classical elasticity. However, for the two auxetic materials (ν < 0), the equations of classical elasticity give values significantly different from the measured ν. We offer an interpretation of these results based on a recently published analysis of the bounds on Poisson's ratio for classical elasticity to be applicable.

A recent derivation [P.H. Mott and C.M. Roland, Phys. Rev. B 80, 132104 (2009).] of the bounds on Poisson's ratio, v, for linearly elastic materials showed that the conventional lower limit, -1, is wrong, and that v cannot be less than 0.2 for classical elasticity to be valid. This is a significant result, since it is precisely for materials having small values of v that direct measurements are not feasible, so that v must be calculated from other elastic constants. Herein we measure directly Poisson's ratio for four materials, two for which the more restrictive bounds on v apply, and two having values below this limit of 0.2. We find that while the measured v for the former are equivalent to values calculated from the shear and tensile moduli, for two auxetic materials (v < 0), the equations of classical elasticity give inaccurate values of v. This is experimental corroboration that the correct lower limit on Poisson's ratio is 0.2 in order for classical elasticity to apply.

Strength Enhancement in Miscible Blends of Butyl Rubber and Polyisobutylene

The thermodynamic miscibility of polyisobutylene (PIB) with butyl rubber (IIR), a copolymer of isobutene and a few mole % isoprene, was established through observation of spontaneous interdiffusion of the polymers. Networks were prepared from their blend, in which only the IIR component was cross-linked (PIB cannot be cross-linked by sulfur vulcanization or any other method). The blends were significantly stronger (almost 3-fold higher tensile strength) and tougher than neat IIR networks, when compared at equal modulus. This improvement was greater for blends having higher molecular weight PIB. The results show that miscible blends with components having large disparities in their degree of cross-linking (infinite in the present case) circumvent the trade-off between stiffness and strength found for conventional elastomers. The operative mechanism is alleviation of local overstresses by configurational rearrangement of unattached, but entangled, chains. This mechanism is common to other approaches that improve the mechanical properties of networks, such as bimodal networks and hydrogel blends.

Abstract The preparation of highly aromatic elastomers from a bisphenol A‐based divinyl‐terminated resin and polymerization with various aromatic silane containing compounds utilizing a room temperature hydrosilylation reaction is demonstrated. The polymers exhibit high thermal and oxidative stability with 5% weight losses around 430 and 350°C and char yields ranging from 35% to 40%. The thermosets maintained their elastomeric properties with good hardness and mechanical properties as measured by elongation measurements. The toughness of the thermosets was not improved with the inclusion of aromatic moieties but the hardness did appear to increase with the addition of more aromatic groups.
