Leaching and antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles loaded onto natural zeolite clinoptilolite by ion exchange and wet impregnation

This study aimed to compare the leaching and antimicrobial properties of silver that was loaded onto the natural zeolite clinoptilolite by ion exchange and wet impregnation. Silver ions were reduced using sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The leaching of silver from the prepared silver-clinoptilolite (Ag-EHC) nanocomposite samples and their antimicrobial activity on Escherichia coli Epi 300 were investigated. It was observed that the percentage of silver loaded onto EHC depended on the loading procedure and the concentration of silver precursor used. Up to 87% of silver was loaded onto EHC by wet impregnation. The size of synthesized silver nanoparticles varied between 8.71-72.67 nm and 7.93-73.91 nm when silver was loaded by ion exchange and wet impregnation, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the prepared nanocomposite samples was related to the concentration of silver precursor used, the leaching rate and the size of silver nanoparticles obtained after reduction. However, only in the case of the nanocomposite sample (Ag-WEHC) obtained after loading 43.80 ± 1.90 µg of Ag per gram zeolite through wet impregnation was the leaching rate lower than 0.1 mg L-1 limit recommended by WHO, with an acceptable microbial killing effect.

Spatial Distribution of DDT and Its Metabolites in Soils from Indoor Residual Spraying in Tshilamusi Village, Limpopo

The continued application of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in indoor residual spraying has posed significant threat to human health in Northern part of South Africa, despite its ban. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and spatial distribution of DDTs and its metabolites in surface soil (30 samples) collected in and around the spray homesteads; demarcated into three concentric zones A, B, C in Tshilamusi Vhembe district, South Africa. DDTs were the most abundant of all the OCPs chemicals found in soil samples. The concentrations of DDT range from 12.19 to 65.69 µg/kg, with the highest occurring at zone A which is the zone of application. DDTs and all its metabolites considered in this study were found in appreciable concentrations in soil of Zones B and C, far from spray sites. The results showed a strong correlation between distance and concentration levels of DDTs and its metabolites. However, there is a need for proper monitoring of OCPs chemicals in other environmental matrices as well as relevant agencies enforcing strict adherence to regulations on consumption of OCPs.

Synthesis and Characterization of Coal Fly Ash-based Foamed Geopolymer

Fly ash, a residue arising from the combustion of pulverized coal, is one of the major wastes generated in coal-fired power stations. Several utilization options of fly ash are currently being practised in many countries in an effort to minimize waste and protect the environment. This paper studied the potential use of fly ash from South African power utilities in the production of foamed geopolymeric materials which may be suitable for various applications including the building industry. The foamed geopolymers were synthesized through alkali activation of the fly ash and subsequent hydrothermal treatment procedure. This was done by mixing fly ash (FA) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and ultrapure water to form a paste, before introducing sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl, foaming agent) into the existing paste. The resulting mixture was then placed in the oven to produce the foamed geopolymer. The mixing was done using FA: NaOH: NaOCl: H2O mass ratio of 3.03: 1.00: 1.14: 1.00. The chemical composition, mineralogy, morphology and molecular structure of the starting material (fly ash) and the synthesized product (foamed geopolymer) were analyzed using XRF, XRD, SEM and FTIR respectively. The porosity and the bulk density of the foamed geopolymer was also determined using mercury porosimetry.
