Autopsy Findings in a Case of Lepromatous Leprosy Treated with Clofazimine

The fi rst recorded autopsy fi ndings are presented on a young person suffering from intractable lepra reaction treated for four months with clofazimine in a dose of 300 mg daily.Apart fram a generalized yellow colouration of fa tty tissue, brick red in muscle and viscera , extreme congestion and oedema of the mucosa of the small intestine was found, and considered not to be caused by any infectious agent.Deposits of clofazimine crystals were found in the intestinal mucosa .' five months of treatment with DOS, she absconded from the Institute.Seven yeais later, she re tumed with the disease very much advanced and wit .h severe lepra re action, She was treated initial i y with anti in alarials, and later with antimonial drugs, along with other remedies for relief of her symptoms.Ouring this period, she had mild albuminu ria with two to five pus cells per high power microscopic field.After abou t five months of medication

High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) analysis in leprosy patients

A study was undertaken with an aim to find out the levels of circulating high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and ratio of this fr action to total blood cholesterol in lepromatous leprosy patients before and after drug therapy.The healthy contacts of these patients were considered as control subjects of the study.The subjects were distributed in three groups on the basis of their age.HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol ratio was significantly raised in both treated and untreated patients in all three groups compared to the healthy controls.The data may explain the low risk of myocardial infarction due to atherosclerosis in leprosy patients.

Tissue Levels of Clofazimine in a Case of Leprosy

A quantitative assessment of clofazimine in some of the organs obtained at autopsy is reported.Although 40 days had elapsed since stopping treatment with the drug, significant quantities of the substance were found in the organs of the reticulo-endothelial system.The intestinal mucosa ais o showed a heavy con centration of the drug.Attention is drawn to the heavy accumulation of the drug during prolonged treatment.

Six cases of phlebitis of leprous origin affecting the superficial veins have been recorded. This lesion does not seem to be as rare as was previously believed. The clinical and histopathological details of these cases are presented.
