A model to calculate the quasiparticle interaction and the scattering amplitude is presented. The quasiparticle interaction can be separated into two pieces: the direct and the induced. The direct term is an effective potential which can be characterized by three parameters. The s-wave component of this potential is fixed by a general sum rule and the experimentally determined Landau parameters. The other two parameters are independent of density. The induced term includes the exchange of the virtual collective excitations of the medium. The structure of the induced interaction is a direct consequence of the antisymmetrization of the scattering amplitudes. The resulting integral equations self-consistently sum the particle-hole reducible diagrams. The agreement with experiment is very good over the entire pressure range of liquid $^{3}\mathrm{He}$.

Low-density electron liquid

We present an exchange-antisymmetric calculation of the particle-hole interaction in the low-density electron liquid. Long-range screening of the Coulomb interaction is incorporated in a self-consistent manner, and we discuss the general method of incorporating screening, both long range and short range, within this framework. The scattering amplitude is separated into a short-range direct part and a long-range induced interaction. The short-range part includes the effects of short-range electron-electron correlations phenomenologically via polarization potentials. The long-range piece arises from the exchange of particle-hole excitations. These particle-hole excitations provide the screening of the bare Coulomb interaction in the q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0 limit.

Correlation effects in ideal metals

We use an optimized variational theory to calculate the surface energy of ``ideal metals,'' a model recently suggested by Shor and Rose [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 2519 (1991)]. Excellent agreement is found between calculated and experimental surface energies of simple metals.

Equation of State and the Maximum Mass of Neutron Stars

The relationship between the maximum neutron-star mass and observable parameters of the equation of state is explored. In particular, the roles of the nuclear incompressibility and the symmetry energy are considered. It is concluded that, for realistic symmetry energies, the compression modulus cannot, by itself, be severely limited by observed neutron-star masses. Several directions for further study are suggested.
