Electrochemically deposited thin films yield high uniformity, a property which is quite vital to in the context of electrochromic (EC) coatings and devices. Tungsten oxide and polyaniline are two such materials that show superior EC properties individually. However, when combined into a solid‐state device structure, they yield a device where the efficiency increases multifolds. This device combination, being thoroughly characterized in the domain of EC parameters such as high switching speeds, rich color contrast, and stability, is found to be an excellent complementary EC pair. The unique property of the said device is that it can reduce the transmission of wavelengths in the near‐infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, providing an edge over other such combinations. In addition, a four‐digit value of coloration efficiency makes this device stand out in the family of its contemporaries. Overall, the hybrid nature of the device prompts it to be an excellent combination indicating its high performance in terms of increased endurance and heat isolation capacity.

Stoichiometrically Optimized Electrochromic Complex [V₂O_2+ξ(OH)_3‐ξ] Based Electrode: Prototype Supercapacitor with Multicolor Indicator

Abstract The systematic structure modification of metal oxides is becoming more attractive, and effective strategies for structural tunning are highly desirable for improving their practical color‐modulating energy storage performances. Here, the ability of a stoichiometrically tuned oxide‐hydroxide complex of porous vanadium oxide, namely [V 2 O 2+ξ (OH) 3‐ξ ] ξ = 0:3 for multifunctional electrochromic supercapacitor application is demonstrated. Theoretically, the pre‐optimized oxide complex is synthesized using a simple wet chemical etching technique in its optimized stoichiometry [V 2 O 2+ξ (OH) 3‐ξ ] with ξ = 0, providing more electroactive surface sites. The multifunctional electrode shows a high charge storage property of 610 Fg −1 at 1A g −1 , as well as good electrochromic properties with high color contrast of 70% and 50% at 428 and 640 nm wavelengths, faster switching, and high coloration efficiency. When assembled in a solid‐state symmetric electrochromic supercapacitor device, it exhibits an ultrahigh power density of 1066 mWcm −2 , high energy density of 246 mWhcm −2 , and high specific capacitance of 290 mFcm −2 at 0.2 mAcm −2 . A prepared prototype device displays red when fully charged, green when half charged, and blue when fully discharged. A clear evidence of optimizing the multifunctional performance of electrochromic supercapacitor by stoichiometrical tuning is presented along with demonstrating a device prototype of a 25 cm 2 large device for real‐life applications.

Quasi-Fano Resonance-Induced Asymmetric E_2g¹ Raman Mode in WS₂ Nanoflakes

In addition to their technological importance, nanomaterials also act as a physical bed for investigation for revealing new scientific insight about quantum mechanics-driven phenomena. Here, WS2 nanosheets have been chosen to investigate an interesting Fano-type excitation wavelength-dependent Raman line shape from a 2D system. The study reveals the presence of electron–phonon interaction (Fano interaction), the mixing of a discrete spectrum with a continuous spectrum, in the E2g 1 Raman mode of WS2 nanoflakes. A typical Fano-type asymmetric Raman line shape has been observed while using a red excitation wavelength, and the same has been validated by theoretical Fano-Raman line shape fitting. To further validate this, excitation wavelength-dependent variation in the Raman line shape has been studied, which confirms that the asymmetry is due to Fano interaction. The experimentally observed Raman line shape shows very good agreement with the theoretically generated line shapes using the Fano-Raman line shape function. An excitation wavelength-dependent Fano coupling parameter has been calculated, and an empirical relation has also been proposed.

Bendable & twistable oxide-polymer based hybrid electrochromic device: Flexible and multi-wavelength color modulation

Flexible electrochromic (EC) technology has made huge progress in electronic industry for their applications in flexible displays, e-papers, e-curtains etc. The performance of device is the main concern while fabricating a flexible electrochromic device. In this paper, a solid state flexible electrochromic device (flex-ECD) has been demonstrated by combining the excellent EC performance of organic polymer and excellent stability of metal oxides which exhibits fast color switching and excellent stability after bending and twisting it for several times. For the fabrication of device, first Co3O4 and WO3 powders have been synthesised and utilised as dopants in the two electrochromic active materials namely polythiophene (P3HT) and ethyl viologen (EV) respectively. Due to the doping of these nanomaterials the performance of the flex-ECD has been enhanced as measured in terms of coloration efficiency, switching time and stability. Additionally, the device shows color switching in their different wavelength regions between visible and NIR. The flex-ECD shows high stability with a few seconds of switching time and high coloration efficiency of 420 cm2/C. The device was first bent and subsequently twisted for several more times. After bending, the performance has been checked, exhibiting minimal change in switching time at 515nm and 665nm without compromising the coloration efficiency much. The device shows excellent stability after bending and twisting moments making it a good design for future wearable electronics.

Metal oxide-mixed polymer-based hybrid electrochromic supercapacitor: improved efficiency and dual band switching

Abstract The inclusion of charge storage properties in electrochromic devices (ECDs) has gained much interest and has evolved into a promising emerging energy-related field due to multifunctional smart device applications. Here, an organic–inorganic solid-state asymmetric electrochromic supercapacitor device (ESCD) containing nano-CoTiO 3 -mixed poly-3-hexylthiophene and WO 3 as two electrodes has been designed to study electrochromic and supercapacitor properties. The electrochemical properties of CoTiO 3 show a pseudocapacitive-type charge storage capability, which has been utilized to enhance the electrochromic performance of the ESCD with additional charge storage ability. The device shows charge storage properties with fast charging and slow discharging, giving very high coulombic efficiency with a specific capacitance of 6.4 mF cm −2 at 0.2 mA cm −2 current density. The device shows excellent electrochromic supercapacitive properties with a color contrast of ∼50% and a short switching time of ∼1 s at a 515 nm wavelength with excellent cyclic stability. The device exhibits the capability to cut near infrared wavelength (700 nm and 850 nm) and has a potential application as a heat filtering device. Thus, the addition of pseudocapacitive-type materials in ECDs enhances the capacitive performance along with electrochromic properties, which makes ECDs more suitable for real life applications.

Weak Quantum Effects on the Acoustic Raman Mode in Strongly Confined Silicon: Consequence of Shallow Phonon Dispersion Near-Zone Edge

Strong computational capabilities are required for precise prediction of Raman spectra from low-dimensional materials. A computational as well as analytical study of low-frequency Raman spectral studies have been carried out to propose a simpler way to understand the size-dependent variation in Raman spectral parameters with size for silicon (Si). The variation of peak position and peak width (FWHM) with the size of Si nanoclusters has been compared for optic and acoustic phonon branches of silicon. A decrease in the Raman peak position of acoustic phonon, as predicted by computational analysis, was found consistent with the analytically obtained Raman line shape using the phonon confinement quantum effect. It was also observed that the size-dependent variation in optic and acoustic phonons are not similar rather are opposite in nature. The optic phonon shows strong quantum effects in strongly confined systems, whereas acoustic phonons show a strong quantum effect in a weak confinement system. This apparent inconsistency has been explained by correlating the different natures of acoustic and optic phonon branches. An empirical formula has been proposed to validate the dependence of peak position with the size of nanostructures of Si, which fits well with the analytically obtained Raman line shapes.
