Low-Surface-Area Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Submicrospheres as High-Coulombic-Efficiency and High-Capacity Anodes for Practical Sodium-Ion Batteries

Nitrogen-doped carbon submicrospheres (NCSMs) are synthesized via an efficient and environmentally friendly one-pot polymerization reaction at room temperature, in which dopamine hydrochloride serves as the source for both carbon and nitrogen. Through leverage of its distinctive structure characterized by minimal surface area, fewer oxygen-containing functional groups, and a heightened presence of active nitrogen-doping sites, the synthesized NCSM showcases a noteworthy initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 84.8%, a remarkable sodium storage capacity of 384 mAh g–1, an impressive rate capability of 215 mAh g–1 at 10 A g–1, and a superior cyclic performance, maintaining 83.0% of its capacity after 2000 cycles. The submicron spherical structure, with its limited surface area and scarce oxygen-containing moieties, effectively curtails the irreversible sodium-ion loss in solid–electrolyte interphase film formation, resulting in heightened ICE. The abundant nitrogen doping can expand carbon-layer spacing as well as improve the electron/ion-transport dynamics, guaranteeing a high sodium storage capacity and a strong rate capability. Crucially, the synthesis method presented here is straightforward, effective, and amenable to scaling, offering a novel avenue for the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries.

ANTI-FATIGUE EFFICACY OF CROCIN IN MICE VIA REGULATION OF NRF-2/HO-1 PATHWAY-MEDIATED OXIDATIVE STRESS

ABSTRACT Introduction: Fatigue is a manifestation of sub-health status, which causes serious negative effects in daily life. The antioxidant properties of crocin have been widely investigated in many diseases. However, no correlation between crocin and fatigue was reported. Objective: To verify the anti-fatigue efficacy of crocin in swimming-induced exhaustive time. Materials and Methods: In this study, mice were treated with crocin for 28 days to assess its anti-fatigue efficacy. Exhaustive time, fatigue-relevant biochemical indices, inflammatory cytokines, energy metabolism indicators, oxidation parameters, and the NRF-2/HO-1 pathway were analyzed to explore evidence of crocin in high-intensity exercise. Results: Our research indicated that crocin dramatically extended swimming-induced exhaustive time. In strenuous swimming, crocin clearly eliminated BLA and SUN to maintain internal environment homeostasis, while it markedly improved glycogen concentrations in the muscles and liver to promote energy reserves. Moreover, crocin visibly improved the inflammatory reaction, as represented by reductions in TNF-a and IL-6, promoting endurance capacity. In the muscles, crocin noticeably enhanced SDH and Na+K+-ATP activities to improve energy metabolism in strenuous swimming. Lastly, crocin markedly improved SOD and CAT activities via the NRF-2/HO-1 pathway to defend against oxidative stress-induced fatigue. Conclusions: Crocin provides oxidation resistance and can be developed into anti-fatigue nutriments. Evidence level II; Comparative prospective study.

An In Vitro Study of a Titanium Surface Modified by Simvastatin-Loaded Titania Nanotubes-Micelles

To develop an optimized local delivery system of simvastatin (SV) with improved osseointegration of titanium (Ti) implants, SV-loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PECL) micelles (80 nm in diameter) were loaded in titania nanotube (TNT) arrays (80-100 nm in diameter and 400 nm in length) that were fabricated by anodizing Ti sheets. An in vitro release experiment was performed and revealed that TNTs and micelles can jointly provide a sustained release of SV, and that TNTs alone might function in drug release. The effect of the Ti surface with TNTs or TNTs-micelles on osteoblast-like MG-63 cells was determined by analyzing cell morphology, cytoskeletal arrangement, early adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, and intracellular and extracellular osteocalcin content. The results indicate that the Ti surface with SV-loaded TNTs-micelles not only has better able to promote early adhesion, spreading and early differentiation of osteoblasts than the Ti surface with TNTs alone but it is able to promote calcification of osteoblasts. Therefore, a Ti surface with TNTs or TNTs-micelles is expected to promote contact osteogenesis of the Ti implant, thus contributing to early osseointegration of the implant, whereas the osteogenic effect of the Ti surface with TNTs-micelles is expected to be stronger. This local delivery system can bridge the gap between basic research and applied science for a wide range of titanium-based orthopedic implants in diverse bone-loss diseases, including osteoporosis.

Overcoming the PCBM/Ag Interface Issues in Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells by Rhodamine‐Functionalized Dodecahydro‐Closo‐Dodecaborate Derivate Interlayer

Abstract Efficient modification of the interface between metal cathode and electron transport layer are critical for achieving high performance and stability of the inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a new alcohol‐soluble rhodamine‐functionalized dodecahydro‐ closo ‐dodecaborate derivate, RBH, is developed and applied as an efficient cathode interlayer to overcome the (6,6)‐phenyl‐C 61 butyrie acid methyl ester (PCBM)/Ag interface issues. By introducing RBH cathode interlayer, the functions of the interface traps passivation, interfacial hydrophobicity enhancement, interface contact improvement as well as built‐in potential enhancement are realized at the same time and thus correspondingly improve the device performance and stability. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.08% and high fill factor of 83.37% are achieved, which is one of the highest values based on solution‐processed MAPbI 3 /PCBM heterojunction PSCs. Moreover, RBH can act as a shielding layer to slow down moisture erosion and self‐corrosion. The PCE of the RBH devices still maintain 84% for 456 h (85 °C @ N 2 ), 87% for 360 h (23 °C @ relative humidity (RH) 35%) of its initial PCE value, while the control device can only maintain ≈23%, 58% of its initial PCE value under the same exposure conditions, respectively.
