Hilling media influence on clonal propagation of apple rootstocks through layering

The present study was carried out at Experimental Farm of Division of Fruit Science, SKUAST-Kashmir during2016-2017 and 2017-2018. During the investigation programme, ten hilling materials were applied viz., Vermiculite (T1), Saw dust(T2), FYM(T3),Vermicompost(T4), Vermiculite+ Saw dust+ Pseudomonas (T5), Vermicultite + Saw dust +Azotobacter (T6), FYM + Vermicompost + Pseudomonas (T7), FYM + Vermicompost+ Azotobacter (T8), Pseudomonas+ Azotobacter+ Soil (T9), Control(T10) (only soil was used as a hilling material). The rootstocksused during the research programme consist of M-9 T337(S1), M-27(S2), MM-106(S3), P-22(S4), MM-111(S5). Theexperimental results showed that maximum shoot diameter (12.22mm), fresh leaf weight (33.33g), dry leaf weight(16.23g) and relative water content(87.16 per cent) were recorded under FYM + Vermicompost+ Azotobacter while as maximum annual production of rooted layers (8.62) was found under saw dust as a hilling media. Theminimum shoot diameter (7.12mm), fresh leaf weight (21.83g), dry leaf weight (7.50g), relative water content (70.47 per cent) and annual production of rooted layers (6.81) were recorded under control (only soil was used a hilling material). Among the various propagation techniques it was observed that propagation technique P2 (trench layering) had a significant effect over P1 (mound layering) with regard to shoot diameter, fresh leafweight, dry leaf weight, relative water content and annual production of rooted layers.

Influence of plant growth regulators on leaf and seed yield of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) var. Shalimar dhania-1

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an important seed spice crop of family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae). Seed is an important component and a quality seed plays a crucial role in agricultural production as well as in national economy. Availability of viable and vigorous seed at the planting time is important for achieving targets of agricultural production because good quality seed acts as a catalyst for realizing the potential of other inputs. Since the total cultivable area is decreasing due to over growing population, the increased agricultural productivity is the only option. The good quality seed is pre-requisite to enhance the production and productivity. Plant growth regulators have emerged as chemical that could increase agricultural production at an unprecedented rate and help in removing or circumventing many of the barrier imposed by genetics and environment. Therefore considering the significance of coriander in national economy, a field experiment entitled “Influence of Plant Growth Regulators on Leat, Seed yield and Quality of Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) var. Shalimar Dhania-1” was conducted at experimental field of Division of Vegetable Science Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Shalimar during Rabi 2017-2018. The experiment consisted of 6 levels of plant growth regulators Gibberlic acid (GA3), 1- Naphthalenacetic acid (NAA) and 2, 4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) each at different concentrations, applied at three stages (soaking of seeds, foliar application at 4-6 leaf stage and at initiation of flowering). An absolute control was also maintained. Thus, experiment consisted of 21 treatment combinations. The results indicated that application of treatment, (T2) GA3 45 ppm resulted in maximum values for growth parameters viz., plant height (cm), number of nodes on main shoot, fresh weight of leaves per plant (g), number of branches per plant, number of green leaves per plant, fresh weight of shoots per plant (g), plant spread (cm), and minimum days taken for 50 percent flowering. Similarly maximum values for yield and yield attributing parameters viz., leaf yield per plot (kg), number of umbels per plant, seed yield per plant (g), seed yield per plot (kg) were recorded by treatment, T2 (GA3 45 ppm).

Evaluation of Two Exotic Apple Varieties on M9T337 for Growth and Quality Attributes under Kashmir Conditions

The present investigation was undertaken at experimental fields of Division of Fruit Science, SKUAST-Kashmir, during the year 2014. In order to solve the problems of low productivity, poor quality, less colour and irregular bearing habits in current apple plantations in Kashmir valley, two apple varieties namely Super Chief Sandidge and Fuji Zehn Aztec were imported from Italy on M9T337 rootstock and planted at a distance of 1.5× 3m on four wire trellis system (2222 trees/ha). Following characteristics were recorded: tree height, TCSA, shoot length, leaf area, First flower opening, End of flowering, fruit set, fruit leaf ratio, yield, fruit weight, L/D ratio, TSS (total soluble solids) titrable acidity, TSS/acid ratio and juice yield. The study revealed that both the varieties performed well under Kashmir conditions, however the variety Super Chief Sandidge showed better performance interms of both yield and quality attributes compared to Fuji Zehn Aztec. Fuji Zehn Aztec appeared to be more vigorous and low yielding compared to Super Chief Sandidge.

In the age of precision farming, it is critical to manage mineral nutrition correctly in order to reduce agricultural inputs. As a result, efforts to increase nutrient use efficiency and protect the environment from redundant minerals, which can pose a serious risk of aquifer contamination, are critical. The best practices for managing the mineral nutrition of fruit trees are also necessary to promote fruit yield and quality which may have a significant impact on fruit tree management. The temperate nut crops like walnut, chestnut, hazelnut, and pecan nut are grown in traditional settings and not much attention is given toward their nutrition leading to reduced nut quality and overall yield.
