Effect of the Zn/Mg Ratio on Microstructures, Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Performances of Al-Zn-Mg Alloys

The effect of the Zn/Mg ratio on microstructures, mechanical properties and corrosion performances of Al-Zn-Mg alloys was studied. Microstructures were characterized using the optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Tensile tests, intergranular corrosion (IGC) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests were conducted to study the properties. Microstructures results indicated that with the decrease of the Zn/Mg ratio, the recrystallization proportion and the fraction of second phase decreased, while the size of η’ (MgZn2) phases in grain interior also significantly decreased. The number density of η’ phases in grain interior increased and grain boundary precipitates developed discontinuous distribution with the decrease of the Zn/Mg ratio. These microstructures contributed to the significant improvement of the strength and corrosion resistance. The tensile strength and yield strength increased by 34.1% and 47.4%, respectively, with the Zn/Mg ratio decreased from 11.4 to 6.1. Calculating results indicated that the enhancement of strength mainly contributed from the solid-solution strengthening, grain-boundary strengthening and precipitation strengthening. The intergranular corrosion degree was greatly relieved and the stress corrosion sensitivity index decreased from 0.031 to 0.007 with the Zn/Mg ratio decreased from 11.4 to 6.1.

The effects of Cu and Mg contents on the thermal stability of 6XXX-series aluminum alloy

The effects of Cu and Mg contents on the thermal stability of 6XXX-series aluminum alloys was investigated using tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy, electron backscattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that the thermal stability of 6XXX-series aluminum alloys improved with increasing Cu and Mg contents, and that the precipitate was the most important factor for thermal stability. In the alloy without Cu, the strengthening precipitates are mainly β″ phases. After heat holding at 150°C for 1000 hours, part of the β″ phases transformed into β′ phases and the number density of the β″/β′ phases decreased, leading to a major strength reduction. In addition to β″ phases, Q′ and L phases are the main strengthening precipitates for the alloys containing Cu. Q′ and L phases have higher thermal stability than the β″ phase, and the number density of the Q′ phases decreased slightly after heat holding, while that of the L phases barely changed. This resulted in Cu-containing alloys with higher thermal stability than Cu-free alloys. The L phase number density increases with increasing Mg content. Compared with the Q′ phase, the L phase has higher thermal stability, resulting in higher thermal stability for alloys with higher Mg content.

Quasi-Static Compressive Behavior of Tetrahedral Lattice Truss Structures Made from Aluminium

Tetrahedral lattice truss structures have been made by folding perforated 6061 aluminum alloy sheets. Simple air brazing was used to construct sandwich panels with cellular core; relative density was 0.05. The behavior of quasi-static compression (initial strain rate is 10 −3 S −1 ) was studied in the present study, and three kinds of heart-treatment were investigated, which were T6, T7 and anneal. The results showed that: three distinct stages of deformation show in quasi-static compressive stress-strain curves, namely the linear elastic stage, the longer yield stage and the stage of densification, and densification strain is 0.4; energy absorption mainly occurs in the stage of longer yield, in which severe plastic deformations occur, and the energy absorption of T6 is higher than T7, while the anneal is the lowest; energy absorption efficiency is determined by the material plasticity and strength, and the energy absorption efficiency of T7 is greater than T6, while the annealed state is minimum at the beginning, and finally between T6 and T7.
