Perfect detection of ultra-cold atoms by laser-induced ionization

We propose a method to achieve perfect detection of ultra-cold atoms at fixed incident velocity by ionization. The method is exemplified by means of a model with analytical complex and position-dependent Rabi frequency and damping functions which can be approximated experimentally with three lasers having appropriate beam shapes.

Heat rectification with a minimal model of two harmonic oscillators

We study heat rectification in a minimalistic model composed of two unequal atoms subjected to linear forces and in contact with effective Langevin baths induced by Doppler lasers. Analytic expressions of the heat currents in the steady state are spelled out. Asymmetric heat transport is found in this linear system if both the bath temperatures and the temperature-dependent bath-system couplings are exchanged. The model can be realized with two ions in either common or individual traps. This physical setting allows for a natural temperature dependence of the coupling to the baths. We also explore the parameter space of the model to optimize asymmetric heat current and find conditions for maximal rectification. High rectification corresponds to a good match of the power spectra of the ions for forward temperature bias and mismatch for reverse bias, which may be understood by the behavior of dissipative normal modes.

Transient increase of high momenta in quantum wave‐packet collisions

Abstract We study the transient increase of the upper tail of the momentum distribution in quantum wave‐packet collisions with an analytically solvable model; in particular its dependence with the barrier strength and incident momentum. This effect is a classically forbidden, universal feature of all quantum collisions.

Two-frequency Ramsey interferometry

We investigate Ramsey interferometry for two separated fields oscillating with different frequencies. It is shown that the interplay between average and relative detuning leads to interference effects not present in the standard, single-frequency setup. For a large free-flight time of ground-state atoms before entering the first field region, the Ramsey fringes with respect to the relative detuning become much narrower than the usual ones. The stability of these effects with respect to phase or velocity fluctuations is discussed.

Fast transitionless expansions of Gaussian anharmonic traps for cold atoms: Bang-singular-bang control

Combining invariant-based inverse engineering, perturbation theory, and Optimal Control Theory, we design fast, transitionless expansions of cold neutral atoms or ions in Gaussian anharmonic traps. Bounding the possible trap frequencies and using a "bang-singular-bang" control we find fast processes for a continuum of durations up to a minimum time that corresponds to a purely bang-bang (stepwise frequency constant) control.

We propose a method to cool atoms on a ring by combining an atom diode -a laser valve for one-way atomic motion which induces robust internal state excitation- and a trap. We demonstrate numerically that the atom is efficiently slowed down at each diode crossing, and it is finally trapped when its velocity is below the trap threshold.

Inverse engineering of fast state transfer among coupled oscillators

We design faster-than-adiabatic state transfers (switching of quantum numbers) in time-dependent coupled-oscillator Hamiltonians. The manipulation to drive the process is found using a two-dimensional invariant recently proposed in S. Simsek and F. Mintert, Quantum 5 (2021) 409, and involves both rotation and transient scaling of the principal axes of the potential in a Cartesian representation. Importantly, this invariant is degenerate except for the subspace spanned by its ground state. Such degeneracy, in general, allows for infidelities of the final states with respect to ideal target eigenstates. However, the value of a single control parameter can be chosen so that the state switching is perfect for arbitrary (not necessarily known) initial eigenstates. Additional 2D linear invariants are used to find easily the parameter values needed and to provide generic expressions for the final states and final energies. In particular we find time-dependent transformations of a two-dimensional harmonic trap for a particle (such as an ion or neutral atom) so that the final trap is rotated with respect to the initial one, and eigenstates of the initial trap are converted into rotated replicas at final time, in some chosen time and rotation angle.

Transmission, Reflection, and Interference Contributions to the Tunnelling Dwell Time

Expressions for the transmission, reflection, and interference contributions to the dwell time for wave packet scattering are obtained by means of scattering theory projector operators that provide a unifying framework for various dwell time decompositions. These different dwell time resolutions are illustrated with the aid of a formal analogy between the two-level system and one-dimensional scattering. The complex "times" and Larmor times proposed by other authors are found as particular cases of the theory. Numerical calculations for a rectangular barrier are provided.
