Kondo effect in structurally disordered single element magnetic materials

Experiments of amorphous films of chromium and manganese show that the samples exhibit resistivity minima of the Kondo type. An argument is proposed whereby, due to structural disorder, a small fraction of magnetic sites within the otherwise magnetically ordered system, could be magnetically free. This would then allow a resistivity minimum similar to that observed for dilute magnetic impurities in a non-magnetic matrix.

A matrix formulation of the coherent potential approximation

For a system of atoms interacting via two body forces a suggestion is made, using a matrix formulation of the problem, construction of a coherent potential. Considering the average behaviour of atomic clusters it is possible to include the effects of the off diagonal elements of the interaction matrix.

Abstract Self‐consistent continued‐fraction (SCCF) theory of the Falicov‐Ramirez‐Kimball (F‐R‐K) metalnonmetal transitions in 1D binary alloys, both with statistical short‐range order and purely random, is presented. Results for sets of critical parameters, and those of interest, are then given and shown that the F‐R‐K transitions depend, sensitively, upon the higher spatial correlations (HSC) in these alloys.

On SCCF theory of magnetic properties of 1‐D binary alloys (magnon spectrum, magnetization)

Abstract A detailed SCCF calculation of the magnon densities of states of 1‐D binary alloys, both with statistical short range order and purely random ones, is presented and the results are compared with the electronic densities of states of those alloys. Also the demonstration of the higher spatial correlations (HSC) in the shapes of the magnon densities of states is discussed. It is shown that for some constitutions of 1‐D binary alloys the long range magnetic order is likely to exist and results for the temperature dependence of the magnetization of those binary alloys is also given.

A study of structurally disordered single‐element magnetic materials beyond the homogeneous molecular field approximation

Abstract A usual assumption in the theory of amorphous magnetic materials is 〈S i 〉 = S. It is shown that in amorphous materials this is a very crude approximation. The magnetic properties of small random clusters of localised spins were studied beyond the above simplification. It is found that in this case the fluctuations of the exchange interaction around its crystalline mean value cause an increase of the Curie temperature. In the light of this conclusion most of the experimental results in this direction should be reinterpreted. It is argued that the magnetic properties inherently depend on higher spatial correlations than pair–pair ones.
