Abstract A dormant application of parathion 25 WP or Advantage 4EC was made on 9 Apr, 1982 to a block of mature ‘Red Delicious’ apple trees for control of San Jose Scale. Parathion was applied at 1.0 lb (AI)/acre with an air blast sprayer in 200 gal of spray/acre. Advantage (2 lb (AI)/acre) was applied with an air blast sprayer also in 200 gal/acre, aerially at 14 gal/acre and as a combined aerial-air blast sprayer application. The combined application was to determine if the aerial application would improve control in the tops of the trees. Each application included 5 gal of superior oil/acre. On 8 and 9 Jun, the efficacy of each treatment was determined by counting live scales out of 100 on each of 5 twigs taken at two levels from 25 randomly selected trees per treatment. On 1, 7, and 14 days posttreatment, 5 twigs were taken at 2 levels from 5 trees in each block treated with Advantage® for residue analysis. In the untreated block, and the parathion treatment, trees were too small to partition into high and low levels; therefore samples were randomly collected over the entire tree. At harvest, 50 apples from each of 5 trees were sampled to determine percent infestation.

When a 10% granular formulation of aldicarb was applied at rates of 0.453, 0.907, and 1.360 kg active ingredient/acre to soil in which potatoes were grown, and the days between planting and treatment and between treatment and sampling were varied, residues in potatoes ranged from 0.20 to 0.04 ppm at harvest. When two 3-lb treatments were applied, residues ranged from 0.38 to 0.06 ppm at harvest. Analysis of the peeled potato and potato peeling showed that the residue at the 95% probability level had a small but significantly higher residue in the peel. Baking the potato did not destroy the residue.

The use of insecticides for the control of insects on forage and other crops where a portion of the vine or top may be fed is a well-established practice.The level of insecticide residues remaining in the crops is of importance because of the possible deposition of the insecticide in the fat or secretion in the milk of animals, Dobson, Thornberry and Belling (a)i/ reported the rapid rate of loss of phorate residues on alfalfa.When analyzed by the cholinesterase inhibition method, residues of approximately 400 parts per million declined in 14 days to nonmeasurable levels.No adverse effects were observed in cattle that were fed the treated hay.Huddleston and Gyrisco (15) found, when carbaryl in oil was applied at 1 lb.per acre, there was a rapid loss of residue from alfalfa and red clover.The original deposit of carbaryl on both crops was not as high as was DDT applied at the same rate.Reynolds and coworkers (24) in their work with trichlorfon on alfalfa found, when 1 lb.per acre was applied, that the residue after 4 days was less than 1 p.p.m. and was not measurable at 10 days after application.

Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae) Susceptibility to Azinphosmethyl1

Tests were conducted to measure the susceptibility of codling moth, Cydia pomonelia (L.), adults and larvae of both field and laboratory colonies at Yakima, Wash., to azinphosmethyl and to compare these data with results obtained previously as a test for development of pesticide resistance. Presently, there seems to be no resistance to azinphosmethyl after 22 to 23 years of use. The minimum lethal residue for adults was 0.33 µg/cm2, and for larvae 1.17 µg/cm2 or 168 ppm. The LD50 for the adults of the two strains tested was 0.13 and 0.21 µg/moth.

Rapid Method for the Extraction, Cleanup, and GLC Determination of Toxic Residues of Temik

Abstract The gas chromatographic method previously reported for determining the toxic residues of Temik was modified. The combined toxic residues are extracted from the crop with dichloromethane, the extract is evaporated onto a n adsorbent mixture, and the residue is extracted with acetonitrile, oxidized by hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid, chromatographed through Florisil, and analyzed by gas chromatography. The time needed to analyze samples in batches of 10 was reduced to 1.8 hr/sample, or less than half the time required for the original procedure. The sensitivity of the method applied to apples, potatoes, cucumbers, alfalfa, and cottonseed ranged from 0.007 to 0.010 ppm, and recoveries from samples fortified with 0.02 to 1.50 ppm pesticide ranged from 72 to 114%.
