DEAR: Delay-Guaranteed Energy Profile-Aware Routing Toward the Green Internet

The existing energy-efficient routing algorithms have limitations when considering energy profiles and delay guarantees. In order to overcome these limitations, a delay-guaranteed energy profile-aware routing (DEAR) algorithm is proposed for a green Internet. In order to achieve this, a delay-guaranteed least energy path problem is defined, and then, the DEAR algorithm that can heuristically determine the delay-guaranteed least energy path for a flow using the well-known ant colony optimization technique is proposed. The simulation results demonstrate that the energy efficiency of the DEAR algorithm is approximately two times higher than that of the GreenOSPF, whereas the DEAR guarantees delay requirements of the flows, although the network elements have various energy profiles.

Adaptive CAC algorithms using measurement and estimation

To prevent network congestion due to unpredictable statistical fluctuation of broadband traffic pattern, a robust and reliable traffic control mechanism is required in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. We propose new adaptive connection admission control (CAC) algorithms which calculate the cell loss performance of related function blocks in a switch node using only a declared peak cell rate and an estimated mean cell rate to reduce the inaccuracy of the declared source parameters. We measure only the mean cell rate of the aggregate cell stream in a link to guarantee measurement accuracy. The proposed CAC algorithms can allow more relaxed source parameter declarations and thus guarantee efficient bandwidth utilization.

Dynamic allocation of VS/VD in ABR service using active networking technology

When the available bit rate (ABR) service is deployed in wide area networks (WANs), the service experiences considerable round-trip time (RTT) due to its feedback control mechanism. The virtual source (VS) and virtual destination (VD) function is a recommended method to reduce the RTT. The VS/VD basically shortens control loops where feedback information circulates. The concept of VS/VD, however, has not been highlighted because its implementation is not so easy. We focus on the issue of dynamic allocation of VS/VD functionality in an ATM WAN and argue that active networking technology is suitable to elaborate the flat VS/VD functionality. The framework which makes the active networking technology coexist with ATM networks is presented and the details of the active VS/VD function are described.

Adaptive Hybrid Data Aggregation Policy for asynchronous MAC-based clustered sensor networks

In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), sensor nodes consume their limited battery energy for data transmission. Especially, the clustered sensor nodes in clustered sensor networks nearer the sink need to transmit data packets more frequently, because those functions as both sensor data generator and routers for data transmissions of other sensor nodes; subsequently, their faster energy depletion inevitably result in earlier turning off than others, so called the energy hole problem. Thus, it is imperative to adaptively control the number of data transmission of the clustered sensor nodes. To address this issue, this paper proposes an Adaptive Hybrid Data Aggregation Policy (AHDAP) that is designed to adjust the maximum size of data bursts to be transmitted according to the relative location of the clustered sensor node from the sink so that adaptively controlling the number of data transmission. The performance evaluation results show that the AHDAP can make the clustered sensor nodes nearer the sink result have smaller data transmission for better energy conservation. As a consequence, the AHDAP can achieve enhanced network sustainability as well as effectively extends lifetimes of the clustered sensor nodes by achieving its target performance.

Measurement and modeling the power consumption of router interface

Energy saving study without the power consumption measurement of network devices makes less effective or biased results than the study based on the empirical power consumption data. Thus, precise evaluation of network appliance power consumption is inevitable to develop more influential energy saving techniques. In this paper, we measure the power consumption of an edge router, CISCO 7609 router, as well as evaluate the effect of the packet size and the routing protocol onto the power consumption of an edge router. We investigate that with four different packet sizes according to RFC 2544 and three different routing protocols, none, OSPF, and BGP with the increment of link utilization. We analyse empirical data for numerous individual cases and find that the packet size are closely related to the power consumption of the edge router. Based on these results, we model the formal power consumption equation of the edge router.
