Journey from Powerlessness to Empowerment in Alice Walker’s Meridian

The paper aims at exhibiting how Alice Walker empowers the oppressed women of her community and depicts their liberation from oppression and marginalisation in her novel, Meridian. African-American women belong to the excluded community and are endangered by the evils of racism, sexism, and classicism. Meridian Hill, the protagonist breaks the stereotypes and participates in the Civil Rights Movement, thus transcending the barriers of gender to achieve individual autonomy, self-reliance, and self-realization. She struggles to change the oppressive nature of her society in order to ensure a complete development of the people of her community, especially the black women. Besides the themes of racism, sexism, classism, religion, slavery, and segregation, African-American literature explores the ideas of equality, empowerment, and freedom which were long denied to the black people in white America. The novel depicts the triumph and empowerment of black women through the character of Meridian Hill.

Screening for Antixenosis Resistance of Winter Wheat Genotypes to Cereal Leaf Beetles (Oulema melanopus L.)

The crop damage caused by cereal leaf beetles of the genus Oulema melanopus L (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) has been increased in recent decades. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the antixenosis resistance to cereal leaf beetle in Indian wheat varieties/genotypes/advanced breeding lines of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) created in India. The investigations were conducted under field conditions on natural infestation of existing population of cereal leaf beetle on wheat plants. The extent of differences between 33 genotypes was established to the infestation of cereal leaf beetles and their host suitability. The lowest incidence and degree of damage by cereal leaf beetles was observed in cultivar Ajanta i.e. 3.33 and 7 % respectively while the highest incidence and degree of damage was found in cultivar HB-208 i.e. 35.55 and 37% respectively. Results of our investigations can contribute to the identification of genotypes as host plants of the cereal leaf beetles and their usage in the bridging process.

Isolation, Synthesis And Structure Determination Of Cannabidiol Derivatives And Their Cytotoxic Activities

In a continuing effort to explore the structural diversity and pharmacological activities of natural products based scaffolds, herein, we report the isolation, synthesis, and structure determination of cannabidiol and its derivatives along with their cytotoxic activities. Treatment of cannabidiol (1) with acid catalyst POCl3 afforded a new derivative 6 along with six known molecules 2 − 5, 7 and, 8. The structure of 6 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses and DFT calculations of the NMR and ECD data. All the compounds (2 – 8) were evaluated for their cytotoxic potential against a panel of eight cancer cell lines. Compounds 4, 5, 7, and 8 showed pronounced in vitro cytotoxic activity with IC50 values ranging from 5.6 to 60 μM. Out of the active molecules, compounds 4, and 7 were found to be comparable to that of the parent molecule 1 on the inhibition of almost all the tested cancer cell lines.
