Green synthesis of Au-rGO nanocomposite and its catalytic activity in nitro-reduction and degradation of dyes

An eco-friendly, very simple method for synthesis of gold-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite was developed using leaf extract of Piper pedicellatum C.DC. Its characterization was done by UV–visible, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, Raman, TGA, EDX, TEM analysis. The nanocomposite was very efficiently utilized as catalyst for reduction reaction of 3-nitroaniline and 4-nitrophenol. The kinetic and rate constant of nitro-reduction also reported in this study. The nanocomposite showed excellent catalytic activity for reduction of nitro aromatic compound within very short period of time. The dye which are used in industries such as rhodamine B, methyl red, methyl orange, methylene blue and bromocresol green were degraded rapidly and efficiently in a photocatalytic pathway by the as-synthesized Au-rGO nanocomposite with only 6% activity loss in degradation after the 10th cycle. So, Au-rGO composite has significant catalytic activity in nitroreduction and photocatalytic degradation of dye molecules under sunlight.

Effect of Solvent on Antioxidant Activity of Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum Edgew and its DFT Study

Background: Free radicals can easily damage DNA, proteins and lipids within the tissue. Anti-oxidants from natural sources can diminish the actions of free radicals. The current study deals with the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of the leaves of Zanthoxylum oxyphyllum Edgew. Methods: The antioxidant activities for DPPH, FRAP, ABTS radicals, phosphomolybdate assay, reducing power, and chelating power assay were evaluated of ethanol (ET), methanol (ME), chloroform (CH), ethyl acetate (EA), and petroleum ether (PE) extracts of the leaves. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) study was carried out on major identified phytochemicals to evaluate bioactive molecules responsible for the antioxidant activity. Results: It was observed that the ME extract showed the most potent scavenging activity in DPPH, FRAP, ABTS radicals, phosphomolybdate assay, reducing power, and chelating power assay. The phenolic acids and flavonoids like quercetin, gallic acid, sinapic acid, etc. were identified. The DFT study was done for major phytochemicals of ME extract to evaluate the most responsible bioactive molecule for antioxidant activity. The Gallic acid exhibited the lowest bond dissociation energy (BDE) of 314.9 kcal/mol in gas, 309.2 kcal/mol in methanol, respectively, along with the highest value of radical stabilization energy (RSE), 29.5 kcal/mol. Conclusion: Gallic acid was found to be the most responsible antioxidant among the other compounds, and ME the best solvent system for extraction, followed by CH.

The fruit of Phoebe cooperiana U.N Kanjilal ex A. Das is highly priced and one of the most preferred folk food among the Indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh, India.The methanol extract of fruit collected from East Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh, India were evaluated for total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidant potential.The methanol extract of fruit were subjected to 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydazyl (DPPH) assay for free radical scavenging property and ABTS radical cation scavenging activity to determine antioxidant potential.Folin-Ciocalteu"s method for quantification of total phenolic content and colorimetric method for quantification of total flavonoid content were used in the experiment.Ethnobotany, mode of cooking, demand of fruit in the local market and unscientific harvest from forest and resultant threat on the plant is discussed in the paper.The methanol extract contains considerable phenolic (33.93±1.14mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (941.5 ±5.31 µMRE/g) but no significant correlation between the total content of phenolic and flavonoid and antioxidant potential was found as IC 50 value of 94.6±1.35µg/ml was found in ABTS assay and IC 50 value of 279± 12µg/ml was found in DPPH assay. INTRODUCTION:Indigenous people in different parts of the world have their distinct culture and customs.Mostly they are inhabitants of mountainous regions and closely associates with river, forest and land since time immemorial and use available resources for their food, medicine, clothes and house.

Correlation Between Phenolic, Flavonoid, and Mineral Contents With Antioxidant Activity of Underutilized Vegetables

Natural antioxidants and minerals are important to nutritionists, food manufacturers, and consumers due to their presumed safety and potential therapeutic value. Underutilized vegetables were sampled to evaluate antioxidant activity (AOA), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and free radical scavenging activity. Significant positive linear correlations occurred between AOA, TPC, and TFC. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As) contents were determined. The most common elements were N, P, and K followed by Ca and Fe. A moderate correlation was observed between K content and 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), TPC, and TFC. The underutilized vegetables can be used as sources of natural antioxidants and minerals.

Reduction of aromatic nitro compounds catalyzed by biogenic CuO nanoparticles

Synthesis of CuO nanoparticles using the peel of Musa balbisiana and its application in reduction of nitro aryl compounds are reported here. CuO nanoparticles were characterized by using XRD, XPS, PL, SEM and TEM techniques. In XRD analysis, significant peaks appeared at 18.3, 24.4, 33.6, 34.6, 35.2, 38.2 and 42.7 respectively. The BET surface area and total pore volume of CuO were found to be 7.479 m2 g−1 and 0.1259 m3 g−1, respectively. The generated CuO nanoparticles exhibited interplanar lattice fringe spacings of 0.16 nm. SEM images indicate the formation of flower-like CuO architecture. The hierarchical CuO architecture is found to be made up of nanosheets which were self assembled to form flower-like nanostructures. The synthesized CuO nanoparticles show efficient catalytic activity in reduction of nitro aryl compounds to corresponding amino compounds with a high yield of conversion (74–96%). The reaction was carried out in a green solvent i.e. water. The catalyst was found to be active for several runs. It was further confirmed by several pieces of experimental evidence.

Synthesis of Pd‐rGO Nanocomposite for the Evaluation of In Vitro Anticancer and Antidiabetic Activities

Abstract Biosynthesis of Pd‐rGO nanocomposite using water extract of Zanthoxylum armatum C.DC is reported here. The nanocomposite was characterized using X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope‐Energy Dispersive X‐ray Spectroscopy (SEM‐EDX), X‐ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and Thermo‐gravimetric (TG) analysis. Similarly, the Ag‐rGO and Au‐rGO nanocomposite were synthesized using the water extract of Zanthoxylum armatum C.DC. A comparative study was done on α‐glucosidase inhibition activity and cytotoxicity effect for these nanocomposites. The α‐glucosidase inhibition assay revealed that the Pd‐rGO nanocomposite has excellent inhibitory potency compared to GO, Ag‐rGO and Au‐rGO nanocomposite respectively. In this study, the 50% inhibition concentration (IC 50 ) value was observed at 0.0218 ± 0.01 and 1.051 ± 0.28 μg/ml for Pd‐rGO and GO respectively. Overall our novel findings showed that the cytotoxic effect of Pd‐rGO nanocomposite was higher than other M‐rGO (M=Ag, Au) and GO against prostate cancer DU145 cells compared to non‐tumorigenic prostate epithelial cells, RWPE‐1.
