Electron delocalization and relaxation behavior in Cu-doped Bi2Se3 films

$\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}_{x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}$ is known for superconductivity due to Cu intercalation in the van der Waals gaps between the quintuple layers of $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}$ at $x>0.10$. Here we report the synthesis and transport properties of Cu-doped $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}_{x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}$ films prepared by the chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) method with $0.11\ensuremath{\ge}x\ensuremath{\ge}0$. It is found that the insulatinglike temperature-dependent resistivity of polycrystalline $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}_{x}\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}$ films exhibits a marked metallic downturn and an increase of carrier concentration below \ensuremath{\sim}37 K. There is also a time-dependent slow relaxation behavior in the resistance at low temperature. These effects might be related to the strong hybridization between $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}^{2+}$ conduction bands from the intercalated $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}^{+}$ and substituted $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{u}}^{2+}$ sites in $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}$ films. The findings here have important implications for the understanding and development of doping-induced superconductivity in topological insulators.

Multilayered skyscraper microchips fabricated by hybrid “all-in-one” femtosecond laser processing

Abstract Multilayered microfluidic channels integrated with functional microcomponents are the general trend of future biochips, which is similar to the history of Si-integrated circuits from the planer to the three-dimensional (3D) configuration, since they offer miniaturization while increasing the integration degree and diversifying the applications in the reaction, catalysis, and cell cultures. In this paper, an optimized hybrid processing technology is proposed to create true multilayered microchips, by which “ all-in-one” 3D microchips can be fabricated with a successive procedure of 3D glass micromachining by femtosecond-laser-assisted wet etching (FLAE) and the integration of microcomponents into the fabricated microchannels by two-photon polymerization (TPP). To create the multilayered microchannels at different depths in glass substrates (the top layer was embedded at 200 μm below the surface, and the underlying layers were constructed with a 200-μm spacing) with high uniformity and quality, the laser power density (13~16.9 TW/cm 2 ) was optimized to fabricate different layers. To simultaneously complete the etching of each layer, which is also important to ensure the high uniformity, the control layers (nonlaser exposed regions) were prepared at the upper ends of the longitudinal channels. Solvents with different dyes were used to verify that each layer was isolated from the others. The high-quality integration was ensured by quantitatively investigating the experimental conditions in TPP, including the prebaking time (18~40 h), laser power density (2.52~3.36 TW/cm 2 ) and developing time (0.8~4 h), all of which were optimized for each channel formed at different depths. Finally, the eight-layered microfluidic channels integrated with polymer microstructures were successfully fabricated to demonstrate the unique capability of this hybrid technique.

Switchable Underwater Bubble Wettability on Laser-Induced Titanium Multiscale Micro-/Nanostructures by Vertically Crossed Scanning

We present here a kind of novel multiscale TiO2 square micropillar arrays on titanium sheets through vertically crossed scanning of femtosecond laser. This multiscale micro-/nanostructure is ascribed to the combination of laser ablation/shock compression/debris self-deposition, which shows superaerophobicity in water with a very small sliding angle. The laser-induced sample displays switchable bubble wettability in water via heating in a dark environment and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in alcohol. After heating in a dark environment (0.5 h), the ablated titanium surface shows superaerophilicity in water with a bubble contact angle (BCA) of ∼4°, which has a great ability of capturing bubbles in water. After UV irradiation in alcohol (1 h), the sample recovered its superaerophobicity in water and the BCA turns into 156°. The mechanism of reversible switching is believed as the chemical conversion between Ti-OH and Ti-O. It is worth noting that our proposed switching strategy is time-saving and the switch wetting cycle costs only 1.5 h. Then we repeat five switching cycles on the reversibility and the method shows excellent reproducibility and stability. Moreover, laser-induced samples with different scanning spacing (50-120 μm) are fabricated and all of them show switchable underwater bubble wettability via the above tunable methods. Finally, we fabricate hybrid-patterned microstructures to show different patterned bubbles in water on the heated samples. We believe the original works will provide some new insights to researchers in bubble manipulation and gas collection fields.

Protein Nanotherapeutics as an Emerging Modality for Cancer Therapy

Abstract Protein drugs are a unique and versatile class of biotherapeutics that have not only high biological activity but also superb specificity. This rapidly evolving biotechnology has rendered it possible to produce various proteins in a large scale and reproducible way. Many proteins have demonstrated striking anticancer activities and have emerged as advanced alternatives to cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents for cancer therapy. The clinical translation of anticancer proteins with intracellular targets is, nevertheless, severely hindered by their fast degradation in vivo, poor cell penetration, and inefficient intracellular transportation. The past few years have witnessed tremendous effort and progress in developing polymeric protein delivery nanosystems, ranging from nanoparticles, nanocapsules, nanogels, micelles, to polymersomes, for the treatment of different tumors such as lung tumors, breast tumors, ovarian cancers, and glioblastoma. These proof‐of‐concept studies point out that protein nanotherapeutics, with rationally designed nanovehicles, are able to overcome the extracellular barriers, cell membrane barriers, and intracellular barriers, and systemically deliver proteins into targeted cancer cells, resulting in effective cancer protein therapy. Protein nanotherapeutics appear to be a novel modality for safe and efficient cancer treatment.

Two- and three-photon processes in photoinitiators for 3D laser printing

Abstract The performance of a photoinitiator is key to control efficiency and resolution in 3D laser nanoprinting. Upon light absorption, a cascade of competing excited states and photoreactions leads to the radical formation that initiates free radical polymerization. Here we investigate 7-diethylamino-3-thenoylcoumarin (DETC), one of the most efficient photoinitiators for two-photon polymerization (TPP). Depending on the presence of a co-initiator, DETC causes radical generation either with two-photon or with a unique three-photon excitation, but the mechanism for these processes is not well understood. Here we show that the unique three-photon based radical formation of DETC in the absence of a co-initiator results from the excitation of special highly excited triplet states followed by multiple bond scission possibilities generating radicals. In contrast, photoinitiation in the presence of a co-initiator proceeds via intermolecular electron transfer or hydrogen atom transfer after the photosensitization of the photoinitiator to the lowest triplet excited state. Our quantum mechanical calculations explain the different pathways for the multiphoton activation mechanism of DETC and its radical formation, which enables the rational design of efficient photoinitiators to increase the speed and sensitivity of 3D laser nanoprinting.

High-aspect-ratio microtubes with variable diameter and uniform wall thickness by compressing Bessel hologram phase depth

In this Letter, we present a light field regulation method to form a ring light field with controllable density distribution. This method is to compress the phase modulation depth of Bessel holograms superimposed with blazed gratings and tune the diffraction efficiency of the superimposed holograms by gray scale. The experimental light field generated by the superimposed holograms is consistent with the simulation results. By designing the phase modulation depth of the superimposed holograms with different parameters, ring light fields with suitable intensity distribution are obtained, and the fabrication of ring microstructure with uniform wall thickness is realized. Finally, as a special case of processing, dynamic holographic processing of high-aspect-ratio microtubes with variable diameter and uniform wall thickness is demonstrated.
