Inscription of Fiber Bragg Grating Arrays in Pure Silica Suspended Core Fibers

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) arrays in pure silica four-leaf-clover-shaped suspended core fibers were inscribed with two-beam interference and a deep UV femtosecond laser source. The target fibers are pure silica and do not contain any dopants, nor were they treated with hydrogen before grating inscription. The inscription method is appropriate to measure the effective mode field index of the fiber and allows confinement factors of the guided modes to be derived. Applications of such FBGs can be expected especially for fiber sensing.

Femtosecond laser direct fabrication of integrated optical wave plates in fused silica

Femtosecond laser fabrication of optical waveguides in bulk silica glass is extended to integrated optical waveplates. Polarization retardation was controlled by laser exposure, providing for trimming of waveguide birefringence between 10−5 and 10−4.

Femtosecond laser writing of waveguide retarders in fused silica for polarization control in optical circuits

Femtosecond laser (300 fs, 500 kHz, 522 nm) fabrication of optical waveguides in bulk silica glass is extended to waveguide retarders. We study the merits of nanograting orientation (perpendicular or parallel to the waveguide) for generating high and low birefringence waveguides. This is used together with other exposure condition to control the waveguide birefringence between 10⁻⁵ and 10⁻⁴ permitting for the simultaneous fabrication of the waveguides and the tuning of the retardance demonstrating quarter and half-wave retarders in the 1200 nm to 1700 nm spectrum. The wavelength dependence of the birefringence is also characterized over a range of exposure conditions.

Temperature and Strain Sensing With Femtosecond Laser Written Bragg Gratings in Defect and Nondefect Suspended-Silica-Core Fibers

The spectral behavior in the C-band of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) was analyzed as a function of temperature and strain. The FBGs were fabricated in pure silica four-leaf-clover-shaped suspended-core fibers by (DUV) femtosecond laser exposure (3.6 W at 800 nm, 130 fs, 1 kHz frequency tripled to 350 fs, 650 mW at 267 nm). A defect fiber (with a hollow hole in the core) and nondefect fiber were compared both yielding ≈1 pm/με sensitivity to strain but different sensitivity to temperature (from 3.0 pm/°C to 8.4 pm/°C for the defect fiber and 10 pm/°C for the nondefect fiber). The 16% to 70% relative difference between the thermal coefficients of the two fibers, together with their similar strain sensitivity enables the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature.

Femtosecond Laser Writing of Phase-Shifted Bragg Grating Waveguides in Fused Silica

Phase-shifted Bragg Grating Waveguide filters were formed in bulk glass for the first time by femtosecond laser direct writing. A narrow, tunable 0.1-nm transmission window at 1550-nm is demonstrated for tunable π and other phase-shifts.

Optical Circuits in Fiber Cladding: Femtosecond laser-written Bragg Grating Waveguides

High strength, first order Bragg Grating Waveguides are inscribed in the core and cladding of optical fibers using oil immersion femtosecond direct laser-writing. A laser-induced birefringence of 2.05×10−4 was inferred from polarization split Bragg resonances.

Fiber optic stress-independent helical torsion sensor

Femtosecond laser-fabricated waveguides have been formed into helical paths throughout the cladding of single-mode optical fibers to demonstrate a strain-independent fiber torsion sensor. A comparison between a Bragg grating sensor and a Mach-Zehnder based on helical waveguides (HWs) showed a much weaker twist sensitivity of 1.5 pm/(rad/m) for the grating in contrast with a value of 261 pm/(rad/m) for the interferometer. The HW geometry provided an unambiguous determination of the rotational direction of the twist while facilitating a convenient and efficient means for optical coupling into the single-mode core of the fiber. The flexible three-dimensional writing by the femtosecond laser fabrication method enabled the direct inscription of compact and robust optical cladding devices without the need for combining or splicing multiple-fiber segments.

Integrated Temporal Fourier Transformer Based on Chirped Bragg Grating Waveguides

We experimentally realized an integrated temporal Fourier transformer based on a linearly-chirped Bragg grating waveguide written in silica glass with a femtosecond laser. The device operates in reflection and has a 10-nm bandwidth.
