Challenges and advances for glioma therapy based on inorganic nanoparticles

Glioma is one of the most serious central nervous system diseases, with high mortality and poor prognosis. Despite the continuous development of existing treatment methods, the median survival time of glioma patients is still only 15 months. The main treatment difficulties are the invasive growth of glioma and the obstruction of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to drugs. With rapid advancements in nanotechnology, inorganic nanoparticles (INPs) have shown favourable application prospects in the diagnosis and treatment of glioma. Due to their extraordinary intrinsic features, INPs can be easily fabricated, while doping with other elements and surface modification by biological ligands can be used to enhance BBB penetration, targeted delivery and biocompatibility. Guided glioma theranostics with INPs can improve and enhance the efficacy of traditional methods such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and gene therapy. New strategies, such as immunotherapy, photothermal and photodynamic therapy, magnetic hyperthermia therapy, and multifunctional inorganic nanoplatforms, have also been facilitated by INPs. This review emphasizes the current state of research and clinical applications of INPs, including glioma targeting and BBB penetration enhancement methods, in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility, and diagnostic and treatment strategies. As such, it provides insights for the development of novel glioma treatment strategies.

Neuropathic pain (NP), which results from injury or lesion of the somatosensory nervous system, is intimately associated with glial cells. The roles of microglia and astrocytes in NP have been broadly described, while studies on oligodendrocytes have largely focused on axonal myelination. The mechanisms of oligodendrocytes and their interactions with other glial cells in NP development remain uncertain.

Polyoxometalates as electron and proton reservoir assist electrochemical CO2 reduction

Limited and non-renewable fossil fuels prompt people to develop CO2 reduction technology. Polyoxometalate (POM)-based electrocatalysts have flourished due to their intriguing molecular structure and unique redox chemistry. In this Research Update, the investigations of POM-based electrocatalysts for CO2 are summarized through the following stages: first, brief fundamentals of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and a concise introduction of POMs are introduced to provide a preliminary understanding of POM-based electrocatalysts for CO2RR; next a chronology is retrospected with respect to the development of POM-based electrocatalysts for CO2RR; subsequently, representative works are demonstrated based on the POMs themselves and POM-modified metals/alloys, and molecular catalysts as CO2RR electrocatalysts. Finally, perspectives are proposed for the challenges of the design and development of POM-based systems for electrochemical CO2RR.

Reaction Pathway Regulation for Gaseous and Liquid Products of Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction under Adsorbate Interactions

Halide anion adsorption on transition metals can improve the performance of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), while the specific reaction mechanisms governing selective CO2RR pathways remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the distinct pathways for gaseous (CO) and liquid products (formate and ethanol) on the well‐defined Ag‐Cu nanostructures with controlled chlorination, respectively. We show that CO2 conversion to CO on Ag/AgCl can be tuned by adjusting the thickness of AgCl layer, achieving a Faradaic efficiency (FE) near 100% over a broad potential range in a 0.5 M KHCO3 using flow cell. In contrast, the optimized Cl‐Ag/Cu system enables the conversion of CO2 into liquid products including formate and ethanol with a total FE nearing 100%, delivering high current density under similar conditions. In situ infrared experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the lateral adsorbate of *OCHO intermediate facilitates the thermodynamics of both the CO pathway on Cl‐Ag(111) and the formate pathway on Cl‐Ag/Cu(111) by reducing Gibbs free energy barriers of each potential‐limit step. This work uncovers the role of chlorination in the tuning of C‐bound or O‐bound intermediates during CO2RR on Ag‐Cu catalysts, determining the reaction pathway under lateral adsorbate effects.

Convection-Induced Singularity Suppression in the Keller-Segel and Other Non-linear PDEs

In this paper we study the effect of the addition of a convective term, and of the resulting increased dissipation rate, on the growth of solutions to a general class of non-linear parabolic PDEs. In particular, we show that blow-up in these models can always be prevented if the added drift has a small enough dissipation time. We also prove a general result relating the dissipation time and the effective diffusivity of stationary cellular flows, which allows us to obtain examples of simple incompressible flows with arbitrarily small dissipation times. As an application, we show that blow-up in the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis can always be prevented if the velocity field of the ambient fluid has a sufficiently small dissipation time. We also study reaction-diffusion equations with ignition-type nonlinearities, and show that the reaction can always be quenched by the addition of a convective term with a small enough dissipation time, provided the average initial temperature is initially below the ignition threshold.

Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Reinforced Passivation Film: A Reactive Molecular Dynamics Study

Reinforced concrete is one of the most critical composite material in the modern civil engineering and can improve the tensile resistance of cement-based concrete, and its passivation film plays an important role in the durability of concrete and preventing steel corrosion. But, due to the size limitations, the destruction of micro-scale steel bars has not been well studied. In this work, the reactive molecular dynamics simulation was employed to studying the mechanical properties of steel and its passivation film. The uniaxial stretching of different compounds of γ-FeOOH, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe was performed. We found that the oxidation can reduce the tensile strength of steel. For the three compounds of γ-FeOOH, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe, the order of tensile strength from high to low is Fe>γ-Fe2O3>γ-FeOOH. But, the ductility of γ-FeOOH under x direction is increased. The detail microstructure analysis shown that the difference of tensile strength is origin from the coordination in the materials. The two kinds of stretching processes of whole system stretching (in the Fe phase and x direction of γ-FeOOH phase) and partly area stretching (in the Fe2O3 phase and z direction of γ-FeOOH phase) were clarified. The external force is dispersed in whole system stretching but opposite in partly area stretching. This investigation leads to possible new direction for studying the tensile strength of materials, and the strategy of evaluating materials tensile strength can supply valuable information in evaluating and improving the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete.
