Novel Sol-Gel Composite Second Harmonic Generator and Electrooptic Modulator.

Abstract : The development of organic inorganic second order nonlinear optical materials is discussed in light of the need to obtain practical (high performance, stable operation, processable and low cost) alternatives to inorganic crystals. Sol gel materials have well established optical properties attributed to their superior purity and homogeneity. Processing methods of sol gel materials permit the inclusion of numerous dopants to achieve final materials having variable and desirable properties. These materials have low optical losses and physical properties which are amenable to integrated optical devices. A number of chromophores and ormosil materials have been designed, synthesized, processed, and tested. Several composite materials are described which have high optical nonlinearities and low optical losses when they are prepared as optical waveguides. Many of these films demonstrate stable performance at room temperature and can be considered for selected applications. Specific recommendations for continued work in improving thermal stability are suggested.

Bifunctional chromophore for photorefractive applications

A bifunctional chromophore has been developed which serves as a charge transporting agent as well as a second-order nonlinear optical compound. The chromophore has been incorporated into an inert polymer to form a photorefractive material when doped with a photocharge generation sensitizer. The dependence of the four-wave mixing diffraction efficiency, holographic grating writing rate, and two-beam coupling gain on the chromophore concentration has been studied. The results confirm the photorefractive character of the composite.

Recent progress in sol-gel-processed second-order nonlinear optical and photorefractive materials for photonics applications is de- scribed. A number of composites have been prepared in an effort to obtain superior and cost-effective replacements for inorganic crystals. These composites are described followed by a series of measurements indicating the usefulness of these composites in the area of second- order nonlinear optical applications and photorefractive optical informa- tion storage and processing. © 1996 Society of Photo-Optical Instru- mentation Engineers. Structure of the iodine columns in iodinated nylon‐6

Abstract A study of iodine‐complexed nylon 6 films by polarized resonance Raman spectra shows the presence of both I 3 − and I 5 − species, the latter most likely in the form of an I 2 / I 3 − complex. Polarization characteristics of the Raman spectra show that the I 2 / I 3 units are orinted along the polymer chain and the I 3 − ions are perpendicular to the chain axis. The I 2 / I 3 − units are in a more stable moiety than the I 3 − species. These Raman results are consistent with the x‐ray diffraction data.
