Although current physical activity (PA) guidelines regarding aerobic and anaerobic training are helpful for the population at large, many individuals prefer to engage in alternative forms of PA such as combat sports. As both a martial art and sport, judo is a physically demanding form of PA that potentially offers a novel experience, consequently leading to greater PA adherence. This study aimed to thoroughly search the existing literature to determine the health benefits of judo-specific training. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for original research studies. Only peer-reviewed studies that examined the effects of judo training in males and females aged 18–35 were included in the study. Out of 507 potentially relevant studies, 84 studies met our inclusion criteria and were further analyzed. Data showed that judo athletes and recreational judo practitioners show above-average VO2max, improved body composition, increased bone mineral density, and bone mineral content. Judo is associated with a sequence of adaptations in cardiac structure, function, and blood pressure changes. More research is needed to discover if these changes are maladaptive.
Abstract Background: Rapid weight loss (RWL) is commonly practiced in combat sports. Both magnitude and methods used to induce RWL are largely similar between the combat sports, but currently there is no data on RWL methodology used by sambo athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine RWL procedures sambo athletes apply to lose weight rapidly. Methods: The sample consisted of 199 participants, of which 132 males and 67 females who participated in the World Sambo Championship 2020 held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Each participant received RWL questionnaire that was available in multiple languages, and each participant was instructed how to fill it out. Results: Almost 87% of sambo participants declared to have intentionally cut their weight prior to the competition, whereby 5.27 kg (SD: ±7.57) was lost. Gradual dieting, sauna use and skipping meals were the most dominant methods used to reduce weight prior to competition while more extreme methods of RWL such as the use of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills and vomiting were also implemented but by much smaller fragment of the participants involved. Conclusions: Findings from our study largely match with previously conducted RWL studies in terms of prevalence, magnitude and methods used by combat sport athletes, especially in judo and wrestling. Knowing the hazardous consequences of RWL, alternative methods of sustainable weight loss should be considered.
High levels of physical fitness (PF) can positively affect both health and cognitive function, thus monitoring its levels in youth can help increase health and quality of life in adult populations later on. This systematic review aims to identify PF field-based tests used in young European populations practicing sport to find tools that are adequate for the considered target involving a new battery within the Enriched Sport Activities (ESA) project. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was followed. In the 83 identified articles, the main tests used were: vertical/horizontal jumps (for muscular strength/power); push-ups, running at maximum effort, sit-ups (for muscular strength/endurance); multistage non-intermittent and intermittent tests (for aerobic endurance); sit and reach (for flexibility); sprinting and agility T-tests (for speed and agility, respectively); 10 × 5 m shuttle run (SR) (for both speed and agility). Few studies assessed coordination, reaction time, power, and balance. Although the selected tests are widely used and validated, they do not determine all PF aspects and do not reflect sport-specific features. A final decision was made for the inclusion of the following tests: standing broad jump, seated medicine ball throw, 20 m SR test, 30 m sprint, Illinois test, and a new test, i.e., the crunning test, to assess different skill-related components at once. The use of this combination of tests allows for the assessment of all PF components and can help planning effective training programs and cultivate sporting talent.
Abstract Background Patterns of weight cycling in adult combat sports have been extensively studied, yet data on this matter in youth combat athletes is rather scarce. Methods PubMed, EBSCOhost and Web of Science were used to retrieve relevant data. Eligible studies had to record the methods used to elicit rapid weight loss (RWL) and/or record the oscillations in bodyweight during the RWL phase. Only studies conducted in the context of an official competition were considered for inclusion in the present review. Results RWL is highly prevalent in children and adolescent combat athletes, ranging from 25 to 94% depending on the type of combat sport, age and level of competition. These athletes regularly prompt RWL by increasing exercise frequency and intensity, decreasing fluid and food intake, training in impermeable suits and using sauna frequently. Overall, the magnitude of RWL was ranging from ~ 1% to 6.3 ± 3.7% with significant RWL variations within individual studies and individuals within those studies. Conclusion Acquired data indicated that RWL patterns in young combat athletes are similar to those found in their adult counterparts. Knowing that childhood and adolescence are critical periods for growth and development, RWL needs to be stringently regulated and ideally banned in this population.
The international conference organized by Combat Sports Lab which took place in Novi Sad, the 11 th of September 2021, captures a program of presentations, panel discussions and interactive dialogue which leads the way in novelties within the field of sport science.The event brought together 36 distinguished scholars from 7 countries around the world, for a total of 20 scientific contributions.The event hosted by the University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Sport and Physical Education and the International Public Organization for the Promotion of Science and Sports "Sport, People, Health", Branch office Novi Sad, Serbia has been supported by the Provincial Secretariat for Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Serbia.The excellence of this meeting is a credit to every participant, who has contributed to the discussion.Among the many dialogs opened during the "Novelties in Sport Sciences" congress we appreciated several nutritional aspects as the role of nutrition as a treatment for metabolic diseases and diabetes, novel nutritional tools to improve performance through specific targets in the gut microbiota and new supplements for power sports or the use of molecular hydrogen for performance enhancement.Important aspects related to cardiovascular profiles of judo athletes and screening of cardiovascular disease in elite sports have been also taken into account as well as sport bioethics, sport sociology and sport psychology.Last but not least, the congress addressed aspects of innovation within the field of strength and conditioning in sport science with important topics regarding rapid weight loss in combat sports, effects of specific training modes and core stabilization and the role of physical activity in children and adolescence.Overall, the conference was quite successful.While the congress was rich in new information and novel insights, it also highlighted areas of possible development.These include a better understanding of the role of nutrition in professional sports and important aspects related to strength training in children.Again we wish to thank all the attendees, presenters, speakers and facilitators for the contents and insights provided.The organization committee and congress participants hope this volume will stimulate further investigations and collaborations for future research. Elite judo athletes undergo vigorous training to achieve outstanding results. In pursuit of achieving competitive success, the occurrence of injuries amongst judo athletes is not rare. The study aimed to perform a knee flexors and extensors isokinetic torque analysis in elite female judo athletes. Fifty-eight elite female judo athletes of the Serbian national team (21.02 ± 3.11 years; 62.36 ± 11.91 kg, 165.04 ± 10.24 cm, training experience 12.72 ± 2.98 years) volunteered to participate in this study. The range of motion (ROM) was set at 90°. Testing was performed in a concentric-concentric mode for the testing speed of 60 °/s. Five maximal voluntary contractions of knee extensors and knee flexors muscle groups were measured for both legs. The obtained data showed a statistically significant difference in absolute torque values among different categories as heavier athletes demonstrated higher values. Post hoc analysis showed a significant difference between weight categories, as heavier athletes demonstrated higher values, while no significant differences in normalized torque values for different weight categories were observed. The implementation of new elements and training modalities may improve performance and prevent lateral asymmetry, thus reducing the risk of injury.
Physiological heart adaptations may lead to increased susceptibility to arrhythmia in athletes. Furthermore, vigorous training and method like rapid weight loss (RWL) in combat sports could pose additional risks. This case represents how routine cardiovascular screening during high-risk methods like RWL and high-intensity training (HIT) reveal abrupt ventricular arrhythmias in a young athlete.We report a case of a 20-year-old male wrestler athlete who developed disrupting arrhythmia during RWL and HIT. The study included: a medical exam, 12 lead electrocardiograms (ECG), transthoracic echocardiogram (ECHO), and 24 h of continuous ECG monitoring in baseline, phase one (P1), (in which the athlete had to simulate RWL through vigorous training and dietary intervention and HIT) and phase two (P2), (with the same HIT protocol performed without the RWL procedure). Baseline laboratory analyses were without abnormalities, ECG showed sinus rhythm with one premature atrial contraction (PAC) and ECHO showed signs of concentric remodeling with preserved systolic, diastolic function, and global longitudinal strain. After P1 RWL simulation, he lost 5.15% of body weight in 3 days, which resulted in lower blood glucose levels, higher urea, creatinine, creatine kinase (CK), CK-MB levels, and slightly increased levels of NT pro-BNP, ECG revealed sinus rhythm with one ventricular premature beat (VPB), 24-h continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed frequent ventricular premature beats (PVB) 2,150/ 24 h, with two couplets, and 8 PAC. After an advised 4-week period of de-training continuous 24 h, ECG monitoring was improved with only occasional PVB. The 24 h continuous ECG monitoring was repeated after HIT and revealed even more frequent PVB, 5% of all beats for 24 h, 4,205 in total, and almost all VPB were in bigeminy and trigeminy. The athlete was advised against RWL and extremely vigorous exercise and for regular, frequent checkups with occasional ECG monitoring during and after exercise.The short and long-term implication of abrupt ventricular arrhythmias provoked by intensive training and methods like RWL is unknown. We postulate that cardiovascular screening is necessitated, especially during high-risk methods like RWL and HIT, in helping us prevent adverse outcomes and come to individual-based clinical making decisions for each athlete.
BACKGROUND: Professional rink hockey is a highly demanding intermittent sport. This study investigates the heart rate response (HRR) during official rink hockey league matches and explores the influence of players’ and match-related contextual variables on HRR.METHODS: Polar Team app was used to monitor heart rate. The variables extrapolated were time spent at <60%, 60-70%, 70-80%, 80-90%, and >90% of the maximum heart rate (HRmax) and relative HRmax. Multilevel regression models were used to explore the associations between dependent variables, player-, and match-related characteristics. Fifty-six matches during two regular seasons of the major league in a competitive-elite Italian rink hockey team were monitored.RESULTS: Overall, players spent ~40% of the time in the light intensity zones (<70% of HRmax), ~15% in the aerobic zone (70-80% HRmax), ~24% within the anaerobic zone (80-90% HRmax), and ~17-20% into the maximum effort zone (>90% HRmax). HRR was mainly related to training experience and the importance of each player within the team. In fact, starter players spend much more time at intensities >80% HRmax than first and second change players (P<0.001).CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, starter players have a higher cardiovascular effort imposed by the match than first and second change players due to their primary role in the team. Therefore, we advise prescribing a weekly training plan based on the average HRR response for the players’ category obtained during the competition to optimize recovery and reduce cumulative fatigue over the season.
