Magnetic ground-state properties of noncentrosymmetricCePt3B1−xSix

We present a study of the alloying series of the non-centrosymmetric $f$-electron intermetallic CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. In addition, we include a high pressure magnetization investigation of the stoichiometric parent compound CePt$_3$B. From our data we establish the nature of the magnetic ground state properties of the series, derive the ordered magnetic moment as function of stoichiometry and gain insight into the evolution of the symmetry of the ordered magnetic state with $x$. We thus can verify the notion that the behavior of the sample series can essentially be understood within the framework of the Doniach phase diagram. Further, our findings raise the issue of the role the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnetic interaction plays in correlated electron materials, and its effect on magnetic fluctuations in such materials.

Intrinsic paramagnetism and aggregation of manganese dopants in SrTiO3

Using local-probe magnetic-characterization techniques of muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) we have investigated the Mn-induced magnetism of the wide-bandgap perovskite SrTiO$_3$. Our results clearly demonstrate that this diluted magnetic oxide (DMO) remains paramagnetic down to low temperatures for both doping cases, i.e., when Mn substitutes for Sr or Ti. In addition, both experimental techniques have unveiled that the distribution of individual Mn$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions is nonrandom, as these ions partially aggregate into nanosized clusters.

The non-destructive investigation of a late antique knob bow fibula (Bügelknopffibel) from Kaiseraugst/CH using Muon Induced X-ray Emission (MIXE)

A knob bow fibula (Bügelknopffibel) of the Leutkirch type, which typologically belongs to the second half of the 4th and early 5th century CE, was excavated in 2018 in the Roman city of Augusta Raurica, present-day Kaiseraugst (AG, Switzerland). This was analyzed for the first time for its elemental composition by using the non-destructive technique of Muon Induced X-ray Emission (MIXE) in the continuous muon beam facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). In the present work, the detection limit is 0.4 wt% with ∼ 1.5 hours of measurement time. The fibula was measured at six different positions, at a depth of 0.3-0.4 mm inside the material. The experimental results show that the fibula is made of bronze, containing the main elements copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), tin (Sn) and lead (Pb). The compositional similarities/differences between different parts of the fibula reveal that it was manufactured as two "workpieces". One workpiece consists of the knob (13.0±0.6 wt% Pb), bow (11.9±0.4 wt% Pb) and foot (12.5 ± 0.9 wt% Pb). These show a higher Pb content, suggesting a cast bronze. The spiral (3.2 ± 0.2 wt% Pb), which is part of the other workpiece, has a comparatively lower Pb content, suggesting a forged bronze.

The phase diagram of electron-doped La2−xCexCuO4−δ

Superconductivity is a striking example of a quantum phenomenon in which electrons move coherently over macroscopic distances without scattering. The high-temperature superconducting oxides (cuprates) are the most studied class of superconductors, composed of two-dimensional CuO2 planes separated by other layers that control the electron concentration in the planes. A key unresolved issue in cuprates is the relationship between superconductivity and magnetism. Here we report a sharp phase boundary of static three-dimensional magnetic order in the electron-doped superconductor La2−xCexCuO4−δ, where small changes in doping or depth from the surface switch the material from superconducting to magnetic. Using low-energy spin-polarized muons, we find that static magnetism disappears close to where superconductivity begins and well below the doping level at which dramatic changes in the transport properties are reported. These results indicate a higher degree of symmetry between the electron and hole-doped cuprates than previously thought. The relationship between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism is an unresolved question in electron-doped high-Tc superconductors. Saadaoui et al. perform low-energy muon spin relaxation measurements to study the phase diagram of La2−xCexCuO4−δat the magnetic-superconducting transition region.

Superconductivity and Field-Induced Magnetism inSrFe1.75Co0.25As2

Using muon-spin rotation, we studied the in-plane (${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{ab}$) and the out of plane (${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}$) magnetic field penetration depth in ${\mathrm{SrFe}}_{1.75}{\mathrm{Co}}_{0.25}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ (${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\simeq}13.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{K}$). The penetration depth anisotropy ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\lambda}}={\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}/{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{ab}$ increases from ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\lambda}}\ensuremath{\simeq}2.1$ at ${T}_{c}$ to 2.7 at 1.6 K. The mean internal field in the superconducting state increases with decreasing temperature, just opposite to the diamagnetic response seen in magnetization experiments. This unusual behavior suggests that the external field induces a magnetic order which is maintained throughout the whole sample volume.

Competing spin-glass and spin-fluctuation states in NdxPr4-xNi3O8

Neodymium nickelates have attracted research interest due to their strongly correlated behaviour and remarkable magnetic properties. More importantly, superconductivity has recently been confirmed in thin-film samples of Sr-doped NdNiO2, bringing the layered rare earth nickel oxides into the research spotlight. In this report, we present results on a series of NdNiO2 analogues, NdxPr4-xNi3O8 (x = 0.1, 0.25, 1, 2, and 4) obtained by topotactic reduction, in which we observe systematic changes in the magnetic behaviour. As the Nd3+ content increases, the initially large spin-freezing region with magnetic frustration becomes smaller and gradually shifts to low temperatures, while the magnetic response gradually increases. The muon-spin spectroscopy measurements on Nd4Ni3O8 show that this phenomenon is likely due to the enhancement of spin fluctuations in NdxPr4-xNi3O8, which weakens the spin frustration behaviour for high Nd3+ contents and at low temperatures. These spin fluctuations can be caused by both Nd and Ni ions and could be one of the factors determining the occurrence of possible superconductivity.
