Study of Niobium Mononitride Thin Films Grown Using High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering

Herein, the effect of microstructure on the electronic, and superconducting properties of niobium mononitride (NbN) thin films grown using a high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) and direct current magnetron sputtering (dcMS) is studied. X‐ray reflectivity, cross‐sectional scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy measurements suggest that the film grown with dcMS has a non‐uniform distribution of islands with loosely packed columns while the HiPIMS grown film has a smoother surface and a denser microstructure. Although the X‐ray diffraction measurements show a single‐phase rock‐salt‐type crystal structure in both cases, the local and electronic structure analyzed using N K‐edge X‐ray absorption near edge structure measurements reveals the evidence of a large amount of Nb vacancies in dcMS‐NbN while HiPIMS‐NbN film is closer to stoichiometry. The ordered structure of HiPIMS‐NbN sample results in a relatively higher superconducting transition temperature of 15.2 K and lower normal state resistivity of 90 μΩ cm with a moderate critical field of 18 T and smaller coherence length of 4.2 nm. These results suggest HiPIMS can be utilized to grow high‐quality superconducting thin films of few nanometers required in modern technological devices such as single‐photon detectors, superconducting quantum interference devices.

Modifications of Tungsten Substrates for Improved Surface Hardness Using Dense Plasma

Plasma Facing Component materials are exposed to the harshest environmental conditions inside any nuclear fusion device. Tungsten is the most suitable candidate due to its high melting point, good ablation resistance, good thermal conductivity, low hydrogen retention etc. This would enable the use of these materials as first wall materials for fusion reactors. In the present study, the surface of the tungsten substrates are modified by exposing the tungsten substrates with different RF plasmas and its performance under fusion conditions. Two different strategies were adopted here to improve its surface properties - surface nanostructurization and thin film deposition which were achieved using an RF plasma system and anode ablation in a dense plasma focus device respectively. The fusion conditions were simulated by operating the dense plasma focus device in a deuterium environment in optimal operating conditions. The material characterization before and after exposure to deuterium plasma was done using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and a nanoindentor.

Facet controlled anisotropic magnons in Y3Fe5O12 thin films

Directional specific control on the generation and propagation of magnons is essential for designing future magnon-based logic and memory devices for low power computing. The epitaxy of the ferromagnetic thin film is expected to facilitate anisotropic linewidths, which depend on the crystal cut and the orientation of the thin film. Here, we have shown the growth-induced magneto-crystalline anisotropy in 40 nm epitaxial yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films, which facilitate cubic and uniaxial in-plane anisotropy in the resonance field and linewidth using ferromagnetic resonance measurements. The growth-induced cubic and non-cubic anisotropy in epitaxial YIG thin films are explained using the short-range ordering of the Fe3+ cation pairs in octahedral and tetrahedral sublattices with respect to the crystal growth directions. This site-preferred directional anisotropy enables an anisotropic magnon–magnon interaction and opens an avenue to precisely control the propagation of magnonic current for spin-transfer logics using YIG-based magnonic technology.

Thermal cycling induced evolution and colossal exchange bias in MnPS3/Fe3GeTe2 van der Waals heterostructures

The exchange bias phenomenon, inherent in exchange-coupled ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems, has intrigued researchers for decades. Van der Waals materials, with their layered structure, provide an optimal platform for probing such physical phenomena. However, achieving a facile and effective means to manipulate exchange bias in pristine van der Waals heterostructures remains challenging. In this study, we investigate the origin of exchange bias in MnPS3/Fe3GeTe2 van der Waals heterostructures. Our work demonstrates a method to modulate unidirectional exchange anisotropy, achieving an unprecedented nearly 1000% variation through simple thermal cycling. Despite the compensated interfacial spin configuration of MnPS3, magneto-transport measurements reveal a huge 170 mT exchange bias at 5 K, the largest observed in pristine van der Waals antiferromagnet-ferromagnet interfaces. This substantial magnitude of the exchange bias is linked to an anomalous weak ferromagnetic ordering in MnPS3 below 40 K. On the other hand, the tunability of exchange bias during thermal cycling is ascribed to the modified arrangement of interfacial atoms and changes in the vdW gap during field cooling. Our findings highlight a robust and easily adjustable exchange bias in van der Waals antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic heterostructures, presenting a straightforward approach to enhance other interface related spintronic phenomena for practical applications.
