A novel medium-entropy garnet Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 0.5 Ta 0.5 Nb 0.5 Y 0.5 O 12 (LLZTNYO) was synthesized via a solid-phase method. LLZTNYO exhibited high Li-ion conductivity (1.87 × 10 −4 S cm −1 ) and maintained for 30 days in an air without decay.

Isolation and enantiostability of the B-chiral bis(salicylato)borate anions [B_R(Sal)₂] and [B_S(Sal)₂]

The chiral spiroborate anions [B S (Sal)2] and [B R (Sal)2], (R and S subscripts indicate boron stereochemistry) have been isolated as 1 : 1 quininium and 1 : 2 sparteinium salts, [HQuin][B S (Sal)2] and [H2Spa][B R (Sal)2]2 respectively, by either cation metathesis or a simple one-pot synthesis involving reaction of boric and salicylic acids with the alkaloid base. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy shows that the B-based chirality is stable in polar aprotic media, such as DMF or DMSO, though labile in protic solutions. Enantiopure salts with achiral counter-cations such as [NBu4][B R (Sal)2] may then be prepared by exchange, so these B-chiral anions may have use in metathesis-based resolutions. Due to a site disorder the anion in [H2Spa][B R (Sal)2]2 is limited to 70% ee, however an enantiopure analogue [H2Spa][B R (5-Cl-Sal)2]2 is readily formed using 5-chlorosalicylic acid. This also indicates a wide family of stable enantiopure B-chiral anions may be isolated by this approach.

Synthesis of nanocrystals and morphology control of hydrothermally prepared LiFePO4

Lithium transition metal phosphate olivines such as LiFePO4 have been recognized as very promising electrodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their energy storage capacity combined with electrochemical and thermal stability. A key issue in these materials is to determine the synthetic conditions for optimum control of particle size and morphology, and ideally to find those that result in nanocrystalline products. Here, we report a full study that examines the synthesis of the material via hydrothermal methods to give single phase nanocrystalline materials for LiFePO4 and LiMnPO4, and their solid solutions with Mg2+. A reaction mechanism is proposed. Variation of the synthesis parameters showed that increasing reactant concentration strongly favours the formation of nanocrystalline products, but as less defect-free materials are formed at temperatures above 180 °C, and ideally above 200 °C, control of nucleation and growth can (and should) also be effected using polymeric or surfactant additives. The nature of the precursor and carbon-containing additives in the autoclave also have profound effects on morphology and the electrochemical properties.

Inducing Favorable Cation Antisite by Doping Halogen in Ni‐Rich Layered Cathode with Ultrahigh Stability

Abstract The cation antisite is the most recognizable intrinsic defect type in nickel‐rich layered and olivine‐type cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries, and important for electrochemical/thermal performance. While how to generate the favorable antisite has not been put forward, herein, by combining first‐principles calculation with neutron powder diffraction (NPD) study, a defect inducing the favorable antisite mechanism is proposed to improve cathode stability, that is, halogen substitution facilitates the neighboring Li and Ni atoms to exchange their sites, forming a more stable local octahedron of halide (LOSH). According to the mechanism, it is demonstrated by NPD that F‐doping not only induces the antisite formation in layered LiNi 0.85 Co 0.075 Mn 0.075 O 2 (LNCM), but also increases the antisite concentration linearly. F substitution (1%) induces 5.7% antisite, and it displays an excellent capacity retention of 94% at 1 C for 200 cycles under 25 °C, outstanding high temperature cyclability (153.4 mAh·g –1 at 1 C for 120 cycles under 55 °C). The onset decomposition temperature increases by 48 °C. The ultrahigh cycling/thermal stability is attributed to the stronger LOSH, and it keeps the structural integrity after long cycling and develops an electrostatic repulsion force between oxygen layers to increase the lattice parameter c , which benefits Li‐ion migration.

A push in the right direction: An electron-accepting organophosphorus system has been combined with self-assembly features to create a strongly electron-accepting liquid-crystalline material (see picture). The stability and behavior of the self-assembled liquid crystal could be controlled by adjusting weak intermolecular forces, such as hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions.

In the present work, we develop a comprehensive functional phase diagram for the Ba–Ca–Ta–O quaternary system Ba 3 Ca 1+ x Ta 2− x O 9−3 x /2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.36) between 1000 and 1550 °C, coupled with theoretical calculations of the cationic ordering in supercells.
