Free convection along a vertical wall in a porous medium with periodic permeability variation

Abstract This communication investigates the effect of permeability variation on free convection flow and heat transfer in a porous medium bounded by a vertical porous wall. A transverse periodic variation in permeability is considered to study the effect on heat transfer rate and skin friction. The problem becomes three‐dimensional due to the variation in permeability. Analytical expressions for velocity, temperature, skin friction and rate of heat transfer are obtained using the perturbation technique. Effects of permeability and suction parameters on skin friction and heat transfer is studied and it is found that the increase in permeability creates a higher heat transfer rate and greater skin friction. However, the increase in suction parameter causes the skin friction values to decrease. The results obtained will be useful in the design of steam displacement processes in oil recovery and various geothermal systems.

Numerical error in groundwater flow and solute transport simulation

Models of groundwater flow and solute transport may be affected by numerical error, leading to quantitative and qualitative changes in behavior. In this paper we compare and combine three methods of assessing the extent of numerical error: grid refinement, mathematical analysis, and benchmark test problems. In particular, we assess the popular solute transport code SUTRA [ Voss , 1984] as being a typical finite element code. Our numerical analysis suggests that SUTRA incorporates a numerical dispersion error and that its mass‐lumped numerical scheme increases the numerical error. This is confirmed using a Gaussian test problem. A modified SUTRA code, in which the numerical dispersion is calculated and subtracted, produces better results. The much more challenging Elder problem [ Elder , 1967; Voss and Souza , 1987] is then considered. Calculation of its numerical dispersion coefficients and numerical stability show that the Elder problem is prone to error. We confirm that Elder problem results are extremely sensitive to the simulation method used.

Numerical Simulation Of Groundwater Flow And Solute Transport On A Saline Floodplain In South Australia Using A Density Dependent Model SUTRA

The density dependent groundwater flow and solute transport model SUTRA has been used to investigate stream-aquifer interaction and floodplain processes on a saline floodplain in South Australia. Evapotranspiration and recharge during a flood have been incorporated into the numerical model and a proposed salinity mitigation scheme has been modelled in cross section. Numerical simulations have shown that the creek near the River Murray is relatively fresh and carries substantially less salt compared to the creek in the middle of the floodplain and that salt load to the creeks are strongly dependent on the rising and falling heads in the river and creeks. The peak salt load to the creeks occurs immediately after the flood recession and subsequently declines within a six month period to baseline salt inflow. The effect of pumping on the floodplain has been simulated and sufficient drawdown and salt load reduction can be obtained by using the proposed interception scheme.
