Ignition advancement study for optimized characteristics of a raw biogas operated spark ignition engine

In the current investigation, raw biogas obtained from rural sectors was used as the alternative to gasoline fuel in the spark ignition (SI) engine. The performance and efficiency are mainly dependent on the combustion phasing for which "ignition timing" is an effective tool in a SI engine. Hence, the objective of the present work is to understand the effect of "variable ignition timing" for a biogas-fueled SI engine. For this purpose, a single cylinder, 4-stroke, SI engine of rated power 4.5 kW was operated with raw biogas at a compression ratio (CR) of 10. By maintaining a speed of 1650 rpm, the engine was operated in wide open (WOT) and part throttle (PT) mode with an equivalence ratio of 0.81 and 0.83, respectively. It was observed that the biogas fueled SI engine was found to be operative only within the ignition advance (IA) range of 33–47° CA bTDC both in WOT and PT conditions. The results showed optimal brake power (BP), brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) are achieved at 45° CA bTDC. The average peak cylinder pressure, neat heat release rate (NHRR) and mean gas temperature (MGT) are also observed to be maximum while CO and HC emission at this point of IA were found to be minimum. Due to controlled and complete combustion, CO2 and NOx concentration in the exhaust emission were found to be higher at this point of ignition timing.

Application of Membrane Technology in Food-Processing Industries

The chapter describes applications of membrane processes in food processing (primarily dairy and beverage processing). The increasing call for healthy food from the diet- and fitness-conscious consumer has encouraged researchers to find alternatives to conventional heat treatments. Recovery of valuable bio-active products from waste effluent generated by dairy and beverage processing industries have been widely researched. Membrane science and technology offer a range of options for innovative product design and optimization. Membrane processes may support sustainable industrial growth by preserving energy, decreasing capital costs, and reducing environmental impact. The major challenges associated with membrane processing are membrane fouling and concentration polarization. Membrane fouling results in decreased permeate flux and reduces membrane shelf life. The development of novel cleaning procedures, anti-fouling membrane materials, and module design is ensuring advances in membrane application as a promising alternative for food and beverage processing.

Characterization of nonconventional oil containing seeds towards the production of bio-fuel

This work presents the thermochemical characterization of some nonconventional oil containing seeds. The non-edible and less-edible oil seeds such as Mahua (Madhuca indica), Karanja (Pongamia pinnata), Niger (Hyoscyamus L. Niger), and Linseed (Linum usitatissimum) were characterized on the basis of their degradation profile, oil percentage, cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, and mineral content. TGA analysis confirmed that the active pyrolytic zone for all the seeds lies in the temperature range between 150 and 450 °C. It was observed that these seeds contain maximum percent of oil/extractives such as Mahua: 57.16%, Karanja: 53.19%, Niger: 39.75%, and Linseed: 33.55%. The result indicated that these seeds contains higher amount of celluloses than that of hemicelluloses and lignin. The elemental analysis confirmed that these types of biomasses are suitable for pyrolysis due to the presence of less sulphur, less moisture, and higher volatile matter content. The suitability as a feed for fuel production was observed from the relation between O/C and H/C ratio from the Van Krevelen diagram.
