Friction and corrosion properties of phytic acid ionic liquid-water mixtures

Abstract The study involved the preparation of mixtures of phytic acid ionic liquid and water, which were analyzed for their rheological, frictional, and electrochemical properties. The viscosity and friction characteristics of the mixtures are significantly affected by the water content. Mixtures with low water content (below 30%) result in low friction and negligible wear because of the generation of a close adsorption film and high viscosity. Especially, steel tribo-pairs lubricated with mixtures containing 25% water exhibited friction coefficients lower than 0.06. However, when the water content exceeds 35%, the friction coefficient increases dramatically, and the tribo-surface suffers from severe corrosive wear due to the predominance of the tribo-film in the frictional properties. These results were confirmed through XPS and electrochemical testing.

The dynamic measurement and correction of infrared radiation temperature for rocket motor exhaust plume was established based on Stefan-Boltzmann formula under the assumption that the colorimetric temperature is regarded as the real value. The relationship between the spectral emissivity of the exhaust plume and time is obtained, and the temperature distribution measured by the infrared thermal imager is corrected in real time. During the stable working period of the rocket motor, the maximum value of the infrared radiation temperature distribution curve and the average value corresponding to the time are used to represent the maximum and average infrared radiation temperature of the motor exhaust plume field. This method is applicable to the real-time determination of the spectral emissivity of the exhaust plume and the accurate measurement of the infrared radiation temperature distribution at static or rocket sled flight state, and is of great significance to the development of the low-signature rocket motor and propellant charge.

Tribological Properties of Alkylphenyl Diphosphates as High-Performance Antiwear Additive in Lithium Complex Grease and Polyurea Grease for Steel/Steel Contacts at Elevated Temperature

The alkylphenyl diphosphates pentaerythritol tetrakis(diphenyl phosphate) (PDP) and trimethylolpropane tris(diphenyl phosphate) (TDP) were evaluated as the antiwear additives in lithium complex grease and polyurea grease at 200 °C. The results indicated that both additives may effectively reduce the sliding friction and wear as compared to the base greases. The tribological performances were generally better than the normally used molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based additive package in lithium complex grease and also in polyurea grease. Boundary lubrication films composed of Fe(OH)O, Fe3O4, FePO4, and compounds containing the P–O bonds were formed on the worn surface, which resulted in excellent friction reduction and antiwear performance.

High temperature oxidation resistance behavior of a FeCrAISi coating

The high temperature oxidation resistance behavior of a AISI430 ferritic stainless steel with a FeCrAISi coating was investigated at 900°C in air by the continuous measurement of the weight gain. The micro-structural characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the composition was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The FeCrAISi coating was found to possess good resistant to oxidation at 900°C in air. The results confirmed that the good oxidation resistance of the FeCrAISi coating was attributed to formation the thin a-Al ₂ O ₃ phases on the coatings' surface and at the substrate/coating interface.

Smart Solar–Metal–Air Batteries Based on BiOCl Photocorrosion for Monolithic Solar Energy Conversion and Storage

Herein, a BiOCl hydrogel film electrode featuring excellent photocorrosion and regeneration properties acts as the anode to construct a novel type of smart solar-metal-air batteries (SMABs), which combines the characteristics of solar cells (direct photovoltaic conversion) and metal-air batteries (electric energy storage and release interacting with atmosphere). The cyclic photocorrosion processes between BiOCl (Bi3+ ) and Bi can simply be achieved by solar light illumination and standing in the dark. Upon illumination, the device takes open-circuit configuration to charge itself from the sunlight. Notably, in this system, the converted solar energy can be stored in the SMABs without the need of external assistance. In the discharging process in the dark, Bi0 spontaneously turns back to Bi3+ producing electrons to induce the oxygen reduction reaction. With an illumination of 15 min, the battery with an electrode area of 1 cm2 can be continuously discharged for ≈3000 s. Taking elemental Bi as the calculation object, the theoretical capacity of the SMABs is 384.75 mAh g-1 , showing its potential application in energy storage. This novel type of SMABs is developed based on the unique photocorrosive and self-oxidation reaction of BiOCl to achieve photochemical energy generation and storage.

EFFECTS OF ALUMINUM-BASED MUTLIMETAL PARTICLES ON SOLID PROPELLANTS

Aluminum is well known to increase the specific impulse of composite propellants due to a higher adiabatic flame temperature associated with it. Aluminized propellants typically produce large agglomerates on the burning surface of solid propellants. These agglomerates are the main drawback of using aluminum in composite solid propellants, as they give rise to two-phase flow losses and slag accumulation, resulting in as much as 10% reduction in specific impulse. Nanosized aluminum powder enhances the burning rate of solid propellants significantly; however, the oxide content in it is much higher than micron-aluminum due to its considerable specific surface. This paper discusses an experimental investigation focused on the effects of micron-sized AlMg on the combustion behavior of solid propellants. Combustion characteristics and combustion condensed particles of solid propellants loaded with AlMg were investigated here. The results show that AlMg is more effective than Al in increasing the burning rate of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene based propellant since much heat was released with the help of the reaction between Al and Mg. The particle size of condensed combustion particles was reduced greatly thanks to the use of AlMg.
