THE SUMMARY ON A KIND OF RARE ROCK—FERROBASALTS/FERROPICRITES

High-Fe, magnesian rocks (Ferrobasalts/Ferropicrites) are characterized by high FeO~* contents (tatal Fe as FeO~*)(generally 14%), silica-poor, and low alkaline. These rocks belong to the tholeiitic-Ferropicritic series. The iron-rich and silica-poor liquids (the Fenner trend), commonly different from the low iron and silica-rich liquids (the Bowen trend), are rare on the earth surface. There are not the same, which can be used to explain their petrogenesis at present. Summing up the previous studies, the type of petrogenesis mainly include: (1) high degrees of partial melting of the dehydrated subducting slab or the overlying mantle wedge which has been metasomatized by the slab melt, at low pressure; (2) Simply crystal fractionation from common mid-ridge type basaltic magmas in closed or nearly closed system; (3) Partial melting of high-Fe magnesian melts from mantle plume starting-heads. The study on the mechanism of petrogenesis of high-Fe magnesian magmas is important to understand the tectonic regime of magmas in depth, early evolution of crust, the heterogeneity of lower mantle and the interaction of core-mantle. Meanwhile, it is also most significative for us to understand the petrogenesis of high-Fe magnesian rocks discovered from southern Taihang Mountains and other regions, in China.

U-Pb geochronology and geochemistry of the Dashibao Basalts in the Songpan-Ganzi Terrane, SW China, with implications for the age of Emeishan volcanism

Permian marine basalts (the Dashibao Formation) in the Songpan-Ganzi Terrane to the west of the Yangtze Block, SW China, yield a SHRIMP zircon U-Pb weighted mean age of 263 ± 2 Ma. The Dashibao basalts are characterized by high TiO~2~ contents (1.73-4.65 wt. %) and Ti/Y ratios with a mean of 577, and OIB-like rare earth element (REE) and incompatible element patterns. Geochemical variation within the basalt succession allows division into two groups; Group 1 with an alkaline composition is distinguished by higher TiO~2~ and P~2~O~5~ contents, along with higher Ti/Y and Sm/Yb ratios than the underlying Group 2 that consists predominantly of tholeiitic lavas. Both groups possess weakly to moderately positive ε~Nd~(t) values (0.82 to 5.28), but the Group 2 tholeiitic basalts show relatively depleted signatures (most ε~Nd~(t) \>2.5) when compared to their Group 1 counterparts (ε~Nd~(t) \<2.5). REE modeling is consistent with variable degrees of melting of primitive mantle within the garnet stability field, and reveals that the Group 1 alkaline basalts could have been generated by lower degrees of melting (5-11%) than the Group 2 tholeiites (up to 19%). The initial Nd isotope discrepancy is interpreted in terms of depleted asthenospheric involvement in the early stage Group 2 tholeiitic magma. Combined geochronology, petrography and geochemistry for the Dashibao Formation confirms that it was temporally and genetically associated with the Emeishan basalts, and is therefore an integral part of the Emeishan large igneous province. The new zircon U-Pb dating supports the view that the Emeishan volcanism could be a boundary event occurring at or around the Middle-Late Permian (the Guadalupian-Lopingian) transition, and thereby confirms the validity of a causal connection with the end-Guadalupian mass extinction.

LA-ICPMS Zircon U-Pb Dating for Three Indosinian Granitic Plutons from Central Hunan and Western Guangdong Provinces and Its Petrogenetic Implications

Abstract: The LA-ICPMS zircon U-Pb geochronology of three typically Indosinian granitic plutons yielded weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 214.1±5.9 Ma and 210.3±4.7 Ma for the biotite monzonitic granites from the Xiema and Xiangzikou plutons in Hunan Province, and 205.3±1.6 Ma for biotite granite from the Napeng pluton, western Guandong Province, respectively, showing a similar late Indosinian age of crystallization. In combination with other geochronological data from Indosinian granites within the South China Block (SCB), it is proposed that those late Indosinian granites with an age of −210 Ma and the early Indosinian granites (230–245 Ma) have the similar petrogenesis in identical tectonic setting. The Indosinian granites within the SCB might be the products of anatexis of the thickening crust in a compressive regime. These data provide a further understanding for the temporal and spatial distribution of the Indosinian granites and the dynamic evolution of the SCB.
