Evaluation of a bread board model gamma-ray burst polarimeter toward installation on the international space station

To elucidate the radiation mechanism of gamma ray bursts, we are developing the polarimeter which consists of segmented plastic scintillators and GAGG(Ce) scintillators attached with multi-anode photomultipliers and avalanche photodiodes, respectively. Constructing the bread board model with 36 pieces of plastic scintillator and 24 pieces of GAGG(Ce) scintillator, we have carried out the beam experiments at the KEK Photon Factory in Japan. At the same time, we carried out also computer simulation and we compared the experimental data with results of simulations. As the results, it was recognized that the modulation factor by the experiments is consistent with that by the simulations. On the other hand, though the detection efficiency obtained by the experiments is in rough agreement with that by the simulation, the value of the detection efficiency can not be well explained reasonably. This discrepancy is likely due to the incomplete energy calibration of the plastic scintillators.

Imaging and spectroscopy of fission neutrons with the FNIT experiment

The Fast Neutron Imaging Telescope (FNIT) instrument is a NA-22 funded project for the design, construction, calibration and modeling of an instrument specifically tailored to measure and identify sources of fission neutrons - a key signature of Special Nuclear Material (SNM). A neutron detector that is sensitive to this energy range is of utmost importance to stop the proliferation of these materials. The proof of concept of this instrument has been successfully demonstrated with a limited FNIT prototype. After being constructed and fine-tuned at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), the prototype was calibrated with quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams at Crocker Nuclear Laboratory. Extensive Monte Carlo calculations are currently in the advance stages for the modeling of FNIT. These simulations, along with the calibration and tests that have been performed with a ²⁵² Cf source at UNH, will be used to determine the instrument efficiency and response. Further instrument simulations will allow us to determine the best methods for spectral and imaging de-convolution. Ultimately, these methods will be implemented into ldquoon-linerdquo software being designed for real-time analysis algorithms to be used in conjunction with a fully populated, portable neutron telescope. We present the most recent laboratory and instrument modeling results.

A Balloon-Borne Gamma-Ray Polarimeter for Gamma-Ray Bursts

We have developed a design for a hard X‐ray polarimeter operating in the energy range from 50 to 500 keV. This modular design, known as GRAPE (Gamma‐Ray Polarimeter Experiment), was successfully demonstrated with partially polarized gamma‐ray sources in the lab and fully polarized photon beams at Argonne National Laboratory. In June of 2007, a GRAPE engineering model flew on a high altitude balloon flight which demonstrated the design and collected background data. A much larger payload is currently under development that will provide a significant level of sensitivity for gamma‐ray bursts on a long‐duration balloon flight. The first balloon flight of the full GRAPE instrument is currently scheduled to take place in the Fall of 2011 from Ft. Sumner, NM.

A new low-background Compton telescope using LaBr 3 scintillator

Gamma-ray astronomy in the MeV range suffers from weak fluxes from sources and high background in the nuclear energy range. The background comes primarily from neutron-induced gamma rays, with the neutrons being produced by cosmic-ray interactions in the Earth's atmosphere, the spacecraft, and the instrument. Compton telescope designs often suppress this background by requiring coincidences in multiple detectors and a narrow time-of-flight (ToF) acceptance window. The COMPTEL experience on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory shows that a 1.9-ns ToF resolution is insufficiently narrow to achieve the required low background count rate. Furthermore, neutron interactions in the detectors themselves generate an irreducible background. By employing LaBr₃ scintillators for the calorimeter, one can take advantage of the unique speed and resolving power of the material to improve the instrument sensitivity and simultaneously enhance its spectroscopic performance and thus its imaging performance. We present a concept for a balloon- or space-borne Compton telescope that employs deuterated liquid in the scattering detector and LaBr₃ as a calorimeter and estimate the improvement in sensitivity over past realizations of Compton telescopes. We show initial laboratory test results from a small prototype, including energy and timing resolution. Finally, we describe our plan to fly this prototype on a test balloon flight to directly validate our background predictions and guide the development of a full-scale instrument.

Initial results from the Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (ASCOT) Balloon Flight

A medium-energy gamma-ray Compton telescope called the Advanced Scintillator Compton Telescope (ASCOT) was designed to address the existing need for observations in the gamma-ray energy range of 0.4 - 20 MeV. Built on the legacy of COMPTEL instrument onboard NASA's CGRO, ASCOT uses commercially available high-performance scintillators, such as Cerium Bromide (CeBr ₃ ) and p-terphenyl in conjunction with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) as compact readout devices to improve the instrument response. ASCOT also makes use of the Time-of-Flight background rejection technique along with the hardware advancement, an important tool for effective imaging in this energy range. ASCOT was developed with the goal of imaging the Crab Nebula at MeV energies during a high-altitude balloon flight. The instrument was successfully launched by NASA from Palestine (TX) on 5 ^th July 2018. It operated stably and observed the Crab for ~5 hours from an altitude of 120,000 ft. Based on pre-flight calibrations and simulations results we expect a ~4.5 sigma detection of the Crab in the 0.2-2 MeV band. We present here the calibrated flight data along with preliminary results. The findings from ASCOT will demonstrate an improvement in the energy, timing, and position resolution using this advanced technology.

This modular design, known as GRAPE (Gamma-Ray Polarimeter Experiment), has been successfully demonstrated in the lab using partially polarized gamma-ray sources and using fully polarized photon beams at Argonne National Laboratory. In June of 2007, a GRAPE engineering model, consisting of a single detector module, was flown on a high altitude balloon flight to further demonstrate the design and to collect background data. We are currently preparing a much larger balloon payload for a flight in the fall of 2011. Using a large (16-element) array of detector modules, this payload is being designed to search for polarization from known point sources of radiation, namely the Crab and Cygnus X-1. This first flight will not only provide a scientific demonstration of the GRAPE design (by measuring polarization from the Crab nebula), it will also lay the foundation for subsequent long duration balloon flights that will be designed for studying polarization from gamma-ray bursts and solar flares. Here we shall present data from calibration of the first flight module detectors, review the latest payload design and update the predicted polarization sensitivity for both the initial continental US balloon flight and the subsequent long-duration balloon flights.
