Leaching of Carbonated Air Pollution Control Residues Using Compliance Leaching Tests

ABSTRACT The leaching characteristics of air pollution control (APC) residues collected in Shanghai, China, were compared by performing three compliance leaching tests. These were the standard Chinese method for determining the leaching toxicity of solid waste (GB 5086.1‐1997), the USEPA's Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), and the new European shake test (EN 12457‐3). In particular, behaviors of raw samples and samples that had been subjected to natural aging were compared. Both the leaching tests and natural aging substantially affected the leaching results concerning the APC residue samples. Most importantly, EN and GB tests classified the raw APC residues as hazardous, but the residues passed the TCLP test as nonhazardous. After it had been naturally aged for 720 h, however, the aged sample was classified as hazardous by the TCLP and EN tests, but as nonhazardous by the GB test. Metals that are thought to have been immobilized by carbonation were released at pH 6.3. Model calculations based on the geochemical thermodynamic equilibrium model MINTEQA2 revealed that the formation of metal carbonates did not correspond to the noted change in the leaching behaviors in the three leaching tests. Rather, the partial neutralization of alkaline ash by dissolved CO 2 changing the final pH of the leachate dominated the leaching characteristics. The leaching results showed a change in leachate pH.

Removal of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan by a packed tower with immobilized micro-organism beads

To develop a more effective process for removing H2S and methyl mercaptan (MeSH), which are the important odorous components emitted from wastewater treatment facilities, a packed bed filled with immobilized micro-organism beads was studied. This study encompassed bacteria enrichment, evaluation of bacteria immobilization methods, determination of optimum operation parameters, such as environmental conditions for bacteria growth, removal rate of the packed bed etc. The experimental results are shown as follows: (1) the cultures able to metabolize H2S and MeSH can be enriched from activated sludge and the enrichment periods are 1-2 days and 7-10 days for H2S and MeSH, respectively; (2) the key environmental parameter influencing the cultures is pH value, the suitable ranges are 2-3 and 6-8 for H2S and MeSH, respectively; (3) the maximum removal rate for H2S and MeSH are 6500 g/m3 bed d and 4 g/m3 bed d, respectively; (4) the superficial M-M kinetics parameters are Vm: 11.2 g S/kg dry beads h and Ks: 95.8 mg/m3 for H2S, and Vm: 0.052 g S/kg dry beads and Ks: 2.1 mg/m3 for MeSH; (5) a two-stage biofilter operated in series under different pH values is recommended, which can remove the H2S and MeSH effectively.

Multiscale visualization of the structural and characteristic changes of sewage sludge biochar oriented towards potential agronomic and environmental implication

Abstract Sewage sludge biochars were obtained at different pyrolysis temperatures from 300°C to 900°C and their macro- and microscale properties were analyzed. The biochar's plant-available nutrients and humus-like substances in the water-extractable phase and fixed nutrients in the solid fraction were evaluated for their potential agronomic implications. FT-IR, Raman, XRD, XPS and SEM techniques were used to investigate the chemical structure, functional groups and microcrystal structure on the surface of the biochar. The results revealed minor chemical changes and dramatic mass loss in the biochar obtained at 300–500°C, whereas significant chemical changes in the biochar were obtained at 600–900°C. The concentrations of plant-available nutrients as well as fulvic- and humic-acid-like materials decreased in the biochar samples obtained at higher temperatures. These results implied that the biochar samples pyrolyzed at 300–500°C could be a direct nutrient source and used to neutralize alkaline soil. The surface area and porosity of the biochar samples increased with temperature, which increased their adsorption capacity. Rearrangement occurred at higher temperature 600–900°C, resulting in the biochar becoming increasingly polyaromatic and its graphite-like carbon becoming organized.

Synergetic effect of pH and biochemical components on bacterial diversity during mesophilic anaerobic fermentation of biomass-origin waste

To investigate the synergetic effect of pH and biochemical components on bacterial community structure during mesophilic anaerobic degradation of solid wastes with different origins, and under acidic or neutral conditions.The bacterial community in 16 samples of solid wastes with different biochemical compositions and origins was evaluated during mesophilic anaerobic degradation at acidic and neutral pH. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) were used to compare the communities. Multivariate analysis of the DGGE and SSCP results revealed that most of the dominant microbes were dependent on the content of easily degradable carbohydrates in the samples. Furthermore, the dominant microbes were divided into two types, those that preferred an acid environment and those that preferred a neutral environment. A shift in pH was found to change their preference for medium substrates. Although most of the substrates with similar origin and biochemical composition had similar microbial diversity during fermentation, some microbes were found only in substrates with specific origins. For example, two microbes were only found in substrate that contained lignocellulose and animal protein without starch. These microbes were related to micro-organisms that are found in swine manure, as well as in other intestinal or oral niches. In addition, the distribution of fermentation products was less sensitive to the changes in pH and biochemical components than the microbial community.Bacterial diversity during anaerobic degradation of organic wastes was affected by both pH and biochemical components; however, pH exerted a greater effect.The results of this study reveal that control of pH may be an effective method to produce a stable bacterial community and relatively similar product distribution during anaerobic digestion of waste, regardless of variation in the waste feedstocks.

Molecular Behavior of Dissolved Organic Matter in Liquid Digestate from Biogenic Waste during Electrodialysis Treatment: Reserve, Transfer, or Foul the Membrane?

Effective management and beneficial utilization of liquid digestate is becoming a bottleneck of anaerobic digestion. Electrodialysis exhibits considerable potential in liquid digestate valorization; however, the process is typically challenged by severe membrane fouling due to high organic matter content. In the present study, a bench-scale electrodialysis was carried out to treat fresh and mature digestate with an aim of investigating the behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during electrodialysis using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. Organics that were easily transported across the ion-exchange membrane (IEM) had relatively high O/C ratios (0.208–0.414) contributed from carboxyls, as well as relatively low H/C ratios (1.15–1.55) and high aromatic indexes (0.257–0.504) contributed from the benzene rings. Chemical cleaning with HCl and NaOH exhibited a cleaning effect on 66%–69% richness of DOM and completely removed 33%–38% richness of foulants via deprotonation or protonation effects, whereas 36%–45% richness of DOM, which had significantly higher aromatic indices, could not be completely removed by chemical cleaning due to their high hydrophobic affinity for the polymer matrix of IEM. The speculated fouling mechanisms included electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and geometrical exclusion. The results of the present study could enhance our understanding of DOM behavior during electrodialysis at the molecular level and, in turn, provide insights into the mitigation and prevention of membrane fouling in electrodialysis for the treatment of other organic-rich wastewaters.
