Comparing Highly Ordered Monolayers of Nanoparticles Fabricated Using Electrophoretic Deposition: Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles versus Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Ordered assemblies of nanoparticles remain challenging to fabricate, yet could open the door to many potential applications of nanomaterials. Here, we demonstrate that locally ordered arrays of nanoparticles, using electrophoretic deposition, can be extended to produce long-range order among the constituents. Voronoi tessellations along with multiple statistical analyses show dramatic increases in order compared with previously reported assemblies formed through electric field-assisted assembly. Based on subsequent physical measurements of the nanoparticles and the deposition system, the underlying mechanisms that generate increased order are inferred.

Dielectric properties of colloidal Gd2O3 nanocrystal films fabricated via electrophoretic deposition

We investigated the dielectric characteristics of [Al/Gd2O3/Si] metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors, which were fabricated from films of gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanocrystals used as the gate oxide layer. Electrophoretic deposition cast Gd2O3 nanocrystal films of different thicknesses by varying the concentration of the nanocrystal suspensions. Capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements of the MOS capacitors exhibited hysteresis, which indicated potentially favorable charge-storage properties. The films’ dielectric constant (κ=3.90), calculated from the C-V data, led to the packing density of nanocrystals within the film (66%), which is in the glassy regime approximated by randomly closed packed spheres.

Using Voronoi Tessellations to Assess Nanoparticle–Nanoparticle Interactions and Ordering in Monolayer Films Formed through Electrophoretic Deposition

Monolayers of iron oxide nanoparticles of two different sizes, 9.6 nm and 16.5 nm, were fabricated through electrophoretic deposition. The arrangements of nanoparticles within the films were analyzed using the technique of Voronoi tessellations. These analyses indicated that the films possessed equivalent degrees of ordering, and that the films were uniform over centimeter length scales. Precise measurements of the interparticle spacing were obtained, and the magnitudes of magnetic dipole interactions were calculated. The dipole-dipole interaction among the larger nanoparticles was 14 times larger than that of the smaller nanoparticles, indicating that magnetic coupling interactions could not have been the lone source of ordering in the system.

The electrophoretic deposition of TiO 2 iron oxide nanocrystal monolayers from stable, mixed colloidal suspensions by electrophoretic deposition using non polar solvents is reported. The selective deposition of TiO 2 was accomplished by controlling the mobility of the nanocrystals and the voltage during electrophoretic deposition. The effect of the electrophoretic deposition processing parameters (voltage and particle mobility) on the promotion and suppression of nanocrystal deposition was investigated.

Increased photo-stability of quantum dots in segregated bilayer films

We report a comparative study of photo-stability of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in a variety of thin film samples. These include electrophoretically deposited single and differently sized segregated bilayer films and self-assembled mixed-sized films. Our studies follow static and dynamic QD photoluminescence over prolonged periods of photo-excitation and find that compared to both single-sized and mixed-sized films, the segregated bilayer samples exhibit highest photo-stability. These films show a QD emission quench rate of ∼2.5 times slower than the others and have almost negligible spectral shifts (<2 nm). Time-resolved measurements indicate very short inter-layer energy transfer (ET) time for the acceptor QDs in the bilayer, coupled with low ET efficiency for the donor dots. Further analysis reveals a complex interplay of intra- and inter-ensemble ET, with ET rates that have disparate spectral dependence between the mixed and bilayer films, and we conclude that this leads to the enhanced photo stability in the latter. Our findings provide a vital clue to the optimal design of QD based energy-harvesting structures.
