Polycrystalline InGaN grown by MBE on fused silica glass

A series of polycrystalline InGaN films have been grown on fused silica glass using a plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE) system. Films grown at 600 °C showed pronounced signs of indium segregation, with indium segregating to the substrate interface and film surface, to the point where an essentially In-free intermediate layer was formed. For high indium content InGaN and InN films, homogeneity was substantially improved upon reduction of the growth temperature. In these homogeneous films the PL peak position moves to lower energy with increasing In content, with a PL peak position of 0.8 eV measured for a pure InN film. For the InGaN films, the comparatively broad PL spectra could be separated into two Gaussian peaks. One peak shifted to high energy with increasing temperature, while the other exhibited a more complex behavior. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

The strontium content of roe collected from spawning brown trout Salmo trutta L. reflects recent otolith microchemistry

The relationship between the strontium content of the outer layers of otoliths (an indication of recent marine, estuarine or riverine habitat use) and the strontium content of roe in ripe female brown trout Salmo trutta was examined in fish collected from the Pomahaka River and the lower reaches of the Clutha River, South Island, New Zealand. A close relationship was found between the strontium content of roe and the outer layers of otoliths. This finding suggests that spawned eggs collected from redds could potentially be used to track the extent of upstream spawning migrations by anadromous brown trout.

Overstoichiometric low-energy nitrogen implantations into silicon--formation of gas nanobubbles vs. silicon nanowhiskers.

Accelerator-based ion implantation can be used to produce stoichiometric ratios beyond thermodynamic equilibrium. In the studies reported here, single crystalline silicon wafer material was implanted with high fluences of nitrogen. The implantations, performed with 15N at 5 keV/ion, resulted in the formation of highly swollen nitrogen rich surfaces that incorporated up to 63 at.% nitrogen. The implanted specimens were subsequently annealed with electron beams at high temperature, typically 1150 degrees C for moderately short periods of time (15 s) to investigate the formation of silicon nanowhiskers. However, it was observed that nanowhiskers, the formation of which can be expected by comparable understoichiometric implantations, did not appear. Although the shallow implantations created ultrathin silicon nitride films with typical thickness of 25 nm, laterally swollen areas of 400 +/- 50 nm were observed with atomic force microscopy operated in supersonic mode.
