Colossal Layer Nernst Effect in Twisted Moiré Layers

In this work, we establish a theoretical analysis of the emergence of layer-contrasted Nernst response perpendicular to the direction of the temperature gradient in twisted moir\'{e} layers, called layer Nernst effect (LNE). This phenomenon arises from the trigonal warping of the Fermi surface along with a layer-contrasted pseudomagnetic field. Interestingly, the Fermi surface's warping explicitly breaks intra-valley inversion symmetry, which leads to an imbalance between left- and right-moving carriers, thus resulting in a non-vanishing LNE. We then validate our theoretical scheme by applying it to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Importantly, we find that the LNE coefficient in TBG can reach values as high as $10^3$A/(m$\cdot$K), surpassing those of previously known materials by at least one order of magnitude. These results provide a theoretical foundation for utilizing TBG and other twisted moir\'{e} layers as promising platforms to explore layer caloritronics and develop thermoelectric devices.

Third-order Hall effect in the surface states of a topological insulator

Time reversal and inversion symmetric materials fail to yield linear and nonlinear responses since they possess net zero Berry curvature. However, higher-order Hall response can be generated in these systems upon constraining the crystalline symmetries. Motivated by the recently discovered third-order Hall (TOH) response mediated by Berry connection polarizability, namely, the variation the Berry connection with respect to an applied electric field, here we investigate the existence of such Hall effect in the surface states of hexagonal warped topological insulator (e.g., Bi$_2$Te$_3$) under the application of electric field only. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann formalism, we investigate the effect of tilt and hexagonal warping on the Berry connection polarizability tensor and consequently, the TOH effect provided the Dirac cone remains gapless. We find that the magnitude of the response increases significantly with increasing the tilt strength and warping and therefore, they can provide the tunability of this effect. In addition, we also explore the effect of chemical doping on TOH response in this system. Interestingly, we show based on the symmetry analysis, that the TOH can be the leading-order response in this system which can directly be verified in experiments.

Quantum oscillations as a robust fingerprint of chiral anomaly in nonlinear response in Weyl semimetals

We investigate the nonlinear planar effects (NPEs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) starting from the semiclassical regime to the ultraquantum limit within the framework of Boltzmann transport theory incorporating Landau quantization. Based on our results, we propose quantum oscillations in the NPEs as a robust signature of the celebrated chiral anomaly (CA) in WSMs. By obtaining analytical expressions, we show that the quantum oscillations in the nonlinear regime exhibit two different periods in ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ ($B$ is the magnetic field) compared to the linear response regime with only one period in the inverse magnetic field. In addition, we obtain characteristic angular dependence of the CA-induced NPEs. We conclude that in light of the inconclusive sign of the CA-driven longitudinal magnetoconductance in WSMs as has been illustrated in recent theoretical work, the proposed behaviors of quantum oscillations in the nonlinear planar effects uniquely identify the existence of chiral anomaly in WSMs.

Chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect in multi-Weyl semimetals.

After the experimental realization, the Berry curvature dipole (BCD) induced nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) has attracted tremendous interest to the condensed matter community. Here, we investigate another family of Hall effect, namely, chiral anomaly induced nonlinear Hall effect (CNHE) in multi-Weyl semimetal (mWSM). In contrast to the BCD induced NLHE, CNHE appears because of the combination of both chiral anomaly and anomalous velocity due to non-trivial Berry curvature. Using the semiclassical Boltzmann theory within the relaxation time approximation, we show that, in contrast to the chiral anomaly induced linear Hall effect, the magnitude of CNHE decreases with the topological charge n. Interestingly, we find that unlike the case of n=1, the CNHE has different behaviors in different planes. Our prediction on the behavior of CNHE in mWSM can directly be checked in experiments.

Non-collapsing electric readout of arbitrary Andreev qubits

Nondemolition protocols use ancilla qubits to identify the fragile quantum state of a qubit without destroying its encoded information, thus playing a crucial role in nondestructive quantum measurements particularly relevant for quantum error correction. However, the multitude of ancilla preparations, information transfers, and ancilla measurements in these protocols create an intrinsic overhead for information processing. Here we consider an Andreev qubit defined in a quantum-dot Josephson junction and show that the intrinsic time-dependent oscillatory supercurrent arising from the quantum interference of the many-body eigenstates of the Andreev qubit, can be used to probe the qubit itself nondestructively and \textit{without} collapsing its quantum state. This nondestructive and non-collapsing readout of arbitrary superposition states of Andreev qubits avoids ancilla qubits altogether and significantly reduces experimental overhead as no repetitive qubit resetting is needed. Our findings should have an unprecedented impact on advancing research and applications involving Andreev dots, thus positioning them as promising qubit contenders for quantum processing and technologies.

Majorana Corner Modes with Solitons in an Attractive Hubbard-Hofstadter Model of Cold Atom Optical Lattices

Higher-order topological superconductors hosting Majorana-Kramers pairs (MKPs) as corner modes have recently been proposed in a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulator proximity-coupled to unconventional cuprate or iron-based superconductors. Here, we show that such MKPs can be realized using a conventional s-wave superfluid with a soliton in cold atom systems governed by the Hubbard-Hofstadter model. The MKPs emerge in the presence of interaction at the "corners" defined by the intersections of line solitons and the one-dimensional edges of the system. Our scheme is based on the recently realized cold atom Hubbard-Hofstadter lattice and will pave the way for observing possible higher-order topological superfluidity with conventional s-wave superfluids or superconductors.
