Temporal and spatial changes in the pattern of sandy desert and sandy land in northern China from 1975 to 2010 based on an analysis of Landsat images

Changes in the area of sandy desert and sandy land (SDSL) result from changes in the processes that underlie aeolian desertification. The area of SDSL in northern China has changed greatly in recent decades. Given that SDSL covers large areas of northern China, it is important to understand the spatial and temporal trends in its development and recession for understanding the aeolian desertification. To provide this information, we reconstructed the underlying processes of SDSL from 1975 to 2010 using Landsat images and an analysis of the driving forces. The results indicated that the changes of SDSL have mainly occurred in the eastern part of northern China. The area of SDSL increased by 58,455 km2 from 1975 to 2000, increasing by 4.9%. In contrast, the sandy land has been restored, and the area of SDSL had a decreasing trend since 2000. It decreased by 17,600 km2 from 2000 to 2010, decreasing by 1.4%. These changes were principally driven by human activities and climate variability. Since changes of the area of SDSL were not significantly related to natural environmental factors such as rainfall and temperature, it is clear that the decreasing trend of SDSL has been mainly caused by human activities.

A combined source of electron bunches and microwave power

In this article, the possibility of using a high power klystron amplifier simultaneously as a microwave power source as usual and an electron bunches source by extracting the spent beam with a magnet and also as an oscillator by feedback is investigated. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a very compact electron linear accelerator or for other applications of electron bunches. The feasibility of the idea was first examined by computer simulation of the electron motion in a 5 MW klystron and the characteristics of the klystron spent beam. Experimental study was then carried out by installing a radio frequency cavity and a Faraday cage in sequence at the exit end of a bending magnet located at the top of the klystron collector. The energy and current of the chopped spent electron beam can then be measured. By properly choosing the feedback circuit elements, the frequency stability of the klystron in oscillator mode was proved to be good enough for linac operation. According to the results presented in this article, it is evident that an extremely compact linac for research and education with better affordability can be constructed to promote the applications of linacs.

Measures to alleviate the back bombardment effect of thermionic RF electron gun

The thermionic RF electron gun finds application as a high-brightness electron source for RF linacs. However, cathode heating from the back-bombardment effect (BBE) causes a ramp in the macropulse beam current and limits the usable pulse width. Three methods for alleviating the BEE, ring cathode, magnetic deflection, and laser-assisted heating, were studied theoretically and experimentally. The results of these studies are reported.< >

Size-dependent electrical transport properties in Co nanocluster-assembled granular films

Abstract A series of Co nanocluster-assembled films with cluster sizes ranging from 4.5 nm to 14.7 nm were prepared by the plasma-gas-condensation method. The size-dependent electrical transport properties were systematically investigated. Both of the longitudinal resistivity ( $${\rho }_{xx}$$ ρ x x ) and saturated anomalous Hall resistivity ( $${\rho }_{xy}^{A}$$ ρ x y A ) continuously increased with the decrease of the cluster sizes ( d ). The $${\rho }_{xx}$$ ρ x x firstly increased and then decreased with increasing the temperature for all samples, which could be well described by involving the thermally fluctuation-induced tunneling (FIT) process and scattering. The tunneling effect was verified to result in the invalidation of classical anomalous Hall effect (AHE) scaling relation. After deducting the contribution from tunneling effect to $${\rho }_{xx}$$ ρ x x , the AHE scaling relation between $${\rho }_{xy}^{A}$$ ρ x y A and the scattering resistivity ( $${\rho }_{S}$$ ρ S ) by varying the temperature was reconstructed. The value of scaling exponent γ increased with increasing Co cluster sizes. The size dependence of γ might be qualitatively interpreted by the interface and surface-induced spin flip scattering. We also determined the scaling relation between $${\rho }_{xy}^{A}$$ ρ x y A and $${\rho }_{S}$$ ρ S at 5 K by changing the Co cluster sizes, and a large value of γ = 3.6 was obtained which might be ascribed to the surface and interfacial scattering.
