Human proactive aggression: association with personality disorders and psychopathy

Aggressive behaviors can be divided into two categories: reactive and proactive. Reactive aggressive behaviors occur in response to a stimulus or provocation. Proactive aggressive behaviors occur without provocation and are goal directed. A number of findings have suggested that individuals displaying proactive aggression may be discerned from individuals not displaying proactive aggression on measures of personality, psychopathology and psychopathy as well as in aggressive histories and type and severity of aggressive behaviors committed. In this study, subjects were recruited from a large urban community and classified as proactive (n = 20), reactive-only (n = 20) or nonaggressive (n = 10) based on laboratory behavioral testing. Subjects were administered a battery of questionnaires and structured interviews pertaining to personality disorders and psychopathy. It was hypothesized that proactive aggressive subjects would show greater numbers of personality disorders and have greater psychopathy relative to reactive-only and nonaggressive subjects. These hypotheses were supported. These results suggest that proactive aggression may be identified in a laboratory-based task, and differences between proactive and reactive-only aggressors can be detected.

Relationships Among Laboratory and Psychometric Measures of Impulsivity: Implications in Substance Abuse and Dependence

Objectives Problems with impulsive behavior are a key feature in substance use disorders. Many studies have examined this relationship, but methods used to measure impulsivity have varied greatly. The present study used a multimethod approach to determine relationships using both laboratory and psychometric measures of impulsivity commonly employed in the behavioral and health sciences. Methods Thirty-two adult male subjects participated for 5 days, completing psychometric instruments on day 1 and behavioral tests in counterbalanced order on days 2–5. Results Correlations between the behavioral and psychometric measures were uniformly low. Correlations within the psychometric instruments were consistently high. Principal components analysis revealed that the behavioral measures loaded into separate factors of response inhibition tasks and delay of reward tasks. Psychometric measures loaded into a single factor. Conclusions Results are discussed in terms of how studies of impulsivity might be interpreted based upon the tasks used, and how these interpretations may subsequently guide theory and measurement in substance abuse and dependence.

Impulsiveness and other Personality Dimensions in Substance Use Disorders and Conduct Disorder

Objectives The psychometric measurement of personality and behavior traits may inform both basic research and clinical practice in substance abuse research. Relationships among novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, impulsivity and venturesomeness, and conduct disorder were examined in a group of subjects with a past diagnosis of a substance use disorder and controls. Methods Psychometric data from 68 subjects were analyzed using Analysis of Variance and logistic regression. Results Statistical analyses demonstrated that individuals meeting criteria for a past substance use disorder showed lower reward dependenceand greater impulsivity than controls, when controlling for the presence of conduct disorder. A substance use disorder x conduct disorder interactionwas found on the dimensions of harm avoidance and venturesomeness. Conclusions Logistic regression revealed that a past substance use disorder could be predictedfrom the combination of two factors: low reward dependence and nonplanning impulsivity. Results are discussed in the context of previous data on personality dimensions and substance abuse.

Relationship between attentional bias to cocaine-related stimuli and impulsivity in cocaine-dependent subjects

Background: Cocaine-dependent subjects show attentional bias to cocaine-related stimuli, increased impulsivity on questionnaires, and impaired inhibitory control (one component of impulsivity on behavioral tasks). However, the relationship between attentional bias, impulsivity, and inhibitory control in cocaine-dependent subjects is unknown. Objective: To investigate the relationship between attentional bias to cocaine-related stimuli, impulsivity, and inhibitory control in cocaine dependence. Methods: This study employed the cocaine Stroop task to measure attentional bias to cocaine-related stimuli, immediate memory task (IMT) to measure inhibitory control, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 to measure impulsivity. Thirty-two controls and 37 cocaine-dependent subjects were recruited through newspaper advertisement. Results: Cocaine-dependent subjects had higher attentional bias to cocaine-related words, higher scores for Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and higher commission error rate on the IMT than controls. The attentional bias was positively correlated with the commission error rate on the IMT in the cocaine-dependent subjects but not in control subjects. Conclusions: Cocaine-dependent subjects showed attentional bias to cocaine-related words, increased impulsivity, and poor inhibitory control compared with controls. The attentional bias was associated with inhibitory control in cocaine-dependent subjects but not in control subjects. Scientific Significance: Our findings suggest that cocaine-dependent subjects with poor inhibitory control may show higher attentional bias to cocaine-related words compared with controls and those with better inhibitory control.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging in MDMA Users and Controls: Association with Decision Making

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) may provide information regarding effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) use on brain structure. Twelve MDMA users and 20 healthy controls underwent whole brain DTI data acquisition. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (D(av)), and longitudinal (lambda(1)) and transverse (lambda(T)) diffusivities were compared between MDMA users and controls in 6 regions of the corpus callosum. MDMA users also completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), and a subset of subjects completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Results showed significantly smaller lambda(1) in the rostral body of the corpus callosum in MDMA users, with no differences between groups on lambda(T), FA, or D(av). MDMA users also had a significantly higher BIS nonplanning score and greater preference for disadvantageous choices on the IGT. There was a significant positive correlation between lambda(1) in the rostral body of the corpus callosum and advantageous choices on the IGT. Further research on the etiology of these findings is warranted.
