Preparation and characterization of polypropylene/polylactide blends and nanocomposites and their biodegradation study

Melt blending technique was used for the preparation of blends of two different polymers (polypropylene (PP) and polylactide (PLA)) with/without compatibilizer and nanoclay. The effect of nanoclay on the properties of blends and PP was investigated. Compression molding was used for the preparation of films. PP/PLA (85/15) and PP/PLA/maleic anhydride (85/15/4) were chosen as optimum blends from tensile strength test for further characterization. Tensile strength of PP/PLA (85/15) blend improved with the addition of 4 phr resin compatibilizer. The content of nanoclay was varied from 0 wt% to 5 wt% in PP. The optimized blends were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry, rheological studies, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, biodegradability test, and ecotoxicology. FTIR studies indicated the presence of PLA and nanoclay in the PP matrix. The addition of compatibilizer increased the compatibility between PP and PLA. Biodegradability studies confirmed the biodegradable nature of the blends and composites. Nontoxic nature of biodegraded intermediates has been confirmed by the ecotoxicological tests.

Thermo-oxidative degradation kinetics of grafted polypropylene films

The thermo-oxidative stability and degradation behavior of polypropylene (PP) and grafted PP have been investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. Three multiple heating rate methods, namely Kissinger, Kim–Park and Flynn–Wall have been used to calculate the activation energy as a function of the extent of degradation. The four different heating rates (5, 10, 15 and 20°C/min) were maintained in the temperature range of 30–550°C during the analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has confirmed the presence of carboxylic group on the surface of grafted PP films. Differential scanning calorimetry has shown that the crystallinity decreased with the increase in grafting. In the air atmosphere, the thermo-oxidative degradation occurs via a pathway that involves decomposition of polymer peroxide. Thermo-oxidative stability of grafted PP films is found to increase with an increase in the degree of grafting (DG). The degradation kinetic parameters were used to predict the lifetime of PP and grafted PP films. The activation energy and lifetime of grafted PP films increased with an increase in the DG. The lifetime of PP and grafted PP decreased with an increase in degradation temperature.

Thermal degradation kinetics and lifetime of HDPE/PLLA/pro-oxidant blends

Abstract The effect of adding poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) with and without a pro-oxidant additive cobalt stearate (CoSt) and compatibilizer maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MA- g -PE) on the thermal degradation and stability of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) films was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The kinetic parameters [i.e. activation energy ( E a ), order of reaction ( n ), and frequency factor ln( A )] of the samples were studied over a temperature range of 25°C–600°C at four heating rates (i.e. 5, 10, 15, and 20°C/min) through model-free techniques (e.g. Friedman, second Kissinger, and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa) and model-fitting techniques (e.g. Freeman-Carroll and Kim-Park). The value of E a for neat HDPE was found to be much higher than PLLA; for the HDPE/PLLA blend, it was nearer to that of HDPE. An increase in the activation energy of 80/20 (HDPE/PLLA) blend was noticed by the addition of MA- g -PE. The TGA data and degradation kinetics were also used to predict the lifetime of the film samples. The lifetime of HDPE was found to decrease with the increase in the concentration of CoSt, thereby revealing its pro-oxidative ability. Minimum lifetime was noted for the HDPE/PLLA (80/20) sample blended with CoSt, which increased slightly in the presence of MA- g -PE. Studies indicated that the thermal degradation behavior and lifetime of the investigated film samples depends not only on the fractions of their constituents but also on the heating rates and calculation technique.

In this article, the effect of adding polylactide (PLA) and nanoclay on the thermal stability of polypropylene (PP) films was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal degradation kinetic parameters such as activation energy ( E a ), order of reaction ( n), and frequency factor (ln ( Z)) of the samples were studied over a temperature range of 30–550°C. Analyses were performed under nitrogen atmosphere with four different heating rates (i.e. 5, 10, 15, and 20°C min −1 ). The E a was calculated by Kissinger, Kim–Park, and Flynn–Wall methods. The E a value of PP was much higher than PLA, whereas the addition of PLA and nanoclay in PP decreased the E a . The addition of compatibilizer increased the compatibility and E a of blended films upto some extent. The lifetime of PP was found to be decreased with the addition of PLA and nanoclay. Studies indicated that the thermal degradation behavior and lifetime of the investigated samples depend on the fractions of constituents and heating rates.

Treatment of Colored Effluent using Surfactant Modified Bamboo Leaves Powder

Abstract Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to remove color from aqueous medium using a novel bioadsorbent prepared from bamboo leaves. Methylene blue (MB) dye was chosen as the source of color and it was adsorbed on bamboo leaves powder (BLP) and surfactant modified BLP using Triton X-100 (TX-100) and Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), separately. The effects of various process parameters, viz. contact time, adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, and stirring speed were investigated in detail. Adsorption efficiencies of all the three adsorbents were compared and analyzed. The performance of SDS modified BLP was found to be excellent. Thermodynamic parameters and reaction kinetics were studied to know the nature and mechanism of adsorption. The results showed that MB adsorption followed pseudo second order kinetics and was endothermic in nature. The adsorption equilibrium was also investigated with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The Langmuir isotherm was fitted well with a maximum dye uptake capacity of 125, 143, and 200 mg/g for BLP, BLP modified with TX-100, and SDS, respectively. A regeneration technique was proposed in order to reuse the adsorbent for better economy of the process. Finally, a process calculation was reported to know the amount of adsorbent required for efficient removal of MB. Keywords: adsorptionbamboo leaveisothermkineticsMethylene bluesurface modification
