Subshell Differential Cross Sections for Electron Transfer in Collisions of U90+ Ions with Gaseous Targets

Balmer spectra produced in collisions between He-like uranium projectiles and gaseous targets (N2, Ar, Kr, and Xe) were measured at the jet-target area of the ESR storage ring. The X-ray radiation were recorded in coincidence with the down charged projectiles having captured one electron from the target atom. By means of spectra simulation, all the significant Balmer transition lines were identified. Further, the j-differential cross sections for electron capture into projectile subshells were deduced from the well resolved spectra. For the heavier targets, where NRC contributes considerably, systematic deviations between experiment and the continuum distorted wave approximation are observed

New test of modulated electron capture decay of hydrogen-like 142Pm ions: Precision measurement of purely exponential decay

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7) s$^{-1}$ for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7) s$^{-1}$ for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

State-selective charge exchange cross sections in collisions of highly-charged sulfur ions with helium and molecular hydrogen

The state-selective cross section data are useful for understanding and modeling the x-ray emission in celestial observations. In the present work, using the cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy, for the first time we investigated the state-selective single electron capture processes for S q + –He and H 2 ( q = 11–15) collision systems at an impact energy of q × 20 keV and obtained the relative state-selective cross sections. The results indicate that only a few principal quantum states of the projectile energy level are populated in a single electron capture process. In particular, the increase of the projectile charge state leads to the population of the states with higher principal quantum numbers. It is also shown that the experimental averaged n -shell populations are reproduced well by the over-barrier model. Fragmentation dynamics of acetylene in collision with highly charged ions: Concerted and sequential breakage of CH and CC bonds

The three-body fragmentation of ${\mathrm{C}}_{2}\mathrm{H}{{}_{2}}^{3+}$ to ${\mathrm{H}}^{+}+{\mathrm{C}}^{+}+{\mathrm{CH}}^{+}$ as a consequence of one CH and one CC bond breaking is investigated by 50-keV/u ${\mathrm{Ne}}^{8+}$ impact. All three fragments are detected in coincidence with a scattered projectile (either ${\mathrm{Ne}}^{7+}$ or ${\mathrm{Ne}}^{6+}$) employing a reaction microscope, and their momentum vectors as well as the kinetic energies were obtained. Four distinguished structures are observed in the energy correlation spectra, indicating that abundant fragmentation mechanisms contribute to the ${\mathrm{H}}^{+}+{\mathrm{C}}^{+}+{\mathrm{CH}}^{+}$ channel. The Newton diagrams and Dalitz plots are employed to trace fragmentation mechanisms. We found that both the concerted fragmentation and the sequential pathway with CH bond breaking prior to CC contribute to this channel. The possible electronic states of the ${\mathrm{C}}_{2}\mathrm{H}{{}_{2}}^{3+}$ precursor that may contribute to the identified fragmentation mechanisms are analyzed with the help of quantum chemical calculations. Furthermore, the influence of the collision dynamics between the projectile and the target to the dissociation mechanisms is discussed by comparing the contributions from the reaction channel with transferring one electron while ionizing the other two, i.e., T1I2, and the reversed channel T2I1. The T2I1 channel is observed to be more efficient to initiate fragmentation mechanisms leading to higher kinetic-energy release.

Emission characteristics of three final continuum electrons produced in low-energy double ionization of helium

The double ionization of helium by electron impact for $106\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ incident energy was studied in a kinematically complete experiment by using a reaction microscope. The pattern of the angular correlation of the three emitted electrons was analyzed by selecting different values of the recoil ion longitudinal momentum. The Wannier predicted geometry appears when the recoil ion carries the full initial projectile momentum. It was found that at this low impact energy, the outgoing electrons still remember the initial-state collision information.

Direct evidence of Interatomic Coulombic Decay in electron impact ionization of Ne dimer

The unambiguous evidence of the existence of Interatomic Coulombic Decay (ICD) of Ne dimer in (e, 2e) experiment with impact energy of 380 eV is observed. Our result suggests that the ICD electron accounted for more than 80% of low energy electron yields.

The low-energy astrophysical S factors of the Li6(p,γ)Be7 reaction have been investigated on a 320 kV platform at the Institute of Modern Physics in Lanzhou. The experimental S factor of this reaction shows an interesting sizable drop contrary to any existing theoretical expectations at energies below 200 keV. Such drop has not been fully understood yet and may reflect a novel reaction mechanism. The appearance of an interesting new positive-parity 1/2+ or 3/2+ resonance at Ec.m.≈195keV is discussed. This study shows the danger of extrapolating experimental data over too large an energy range and demonstrates the need for careful direct experimental studies of reaction cross sections at or near stellar energies. In addition, our new results are discussed in the framework of a SUSY assisted Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) model.
