A simple XUV transmission grating spectrograph operating in the wavelength range 3-90 Å with sub-ångström resolution without using any XUV imaging optics is described. This is based on a free-standing gold microstructure grating of 2000 Å period in normal incidence geometry. A spectral resolution of 0.6 Å is obtained by optimizing the slit aperture, the source-to-grating distance and the grating-to-detector distance. Electron temperatures deduced from analysis of the spectrum of a laser-produced magnesium plasma using a plasma spectroscopic code are consistent with theoretical considerations. The spectral range can be extended to higher wavelengths by using a larger detector. The simple geometry and ease of operation of the spectrograph should make it useful in many experiments such as those involving plasma-based XUV lasers and odd-harmonic generation in the XUV spectral region using ultra-short laser pulses.

Microsecond Z-pinch as ultrasoft X-ray radiation source

Spectral characteristics of plasma radiation of a gas Z-pinch with a rise time of 1 μs and current amplitude of 250 kA have been measured. The measurements were performed in the range of X-ray energy quanta from 30 eV to 600 eV. A spectrograph with a transmission grating and a polychromator on the basis of multilayer X-ray mirrors served as the diagnostic devices. Absolutely calibrated semiconducting detectors AXUV-5 were taken as the radiation detector in the polychromator. Full pinch radiation loss was measured with a thermocouple calorimeter. The radiation of He-, Li- and Be- like ions has been shown to dominate at the stage of maximum compression of the nitrogen Z-pinch. The results of the spectral measurements were employed for absolute calibration of various X-ray detectors. Some of these calibration results are presented in the work. Using Ne and Ar as the working gases permits us to proceed to measurements in a ≪harder≫ spectral band and to conduct a detailed study of the line radiation polarization degree for He- like ions of the given elements.

Spectral studies of soft x-ray radiation of laser-produced plasma of various target materials in a wide spectral range

The work is devoted to experimental study of soft x-ray radiation spectra of laser-produced plasma in a wide spectral range of $5--100\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\AA{}$ at the Kamerton facility (GPI) with pulse duration 70 ps, pulse energy $1--5\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{J}$, and wavelength 0.53 microns at which the laser intensity (power flux density) of $7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{14}--3.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{15}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{W}/\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$ was achieved. A spectrograph was used, which had transmission diffraction gratings with a ratio of the elementary gap to the period of the structure of 0.25 and 0.41. Detection was performed on both UV-4 x-ray photo film and Fuji TR fluorescent imaging plate. Solid samples from Al, Si, Ti, Cu, Ta, and W were used as targets. The ionization states of the plasma corresponding to various electron temperatures were calculated, which made it possible to estimate the electron temperature by comparison of these calculation results with the experimentally obtained spectra. The estimated electron temperature, which depends on the laser pulse energy and the target material, varied within the range $100--450\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. To verify the correctness of the temperature estimations obtained by such comparison a numerical simulation of plasma radiation was carried out by the use of prismspect computer program. It was found that the results of this simulation are in good agreement with estimations on the base of experimentally obtained spectra. The analysis of these spectra showed that tantalum, tungsten, or titanium targets are the best candidates among the tested ones for the use of laser-produced plasma as a radiation source in the ``water window'' spectral range ($23--44\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\AA{}$) for applications in biology and medicine.
