Influence of Electrolyte Temperature on the Color Values of Black Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Coatings on AZ31B Mg Alloy

A coating was prepared on an AZ31B Mg alloy substrate via black plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The colorant NH4VO3 was added to Na2SiO3–(NaPO3)6 electrolyte at different temperatures (5, 15, 25, and 35 °C). The influences of electrolyte temperature on the structures, compositions, and color values of black PEO coatings were studied by UV–Visible, XRD, XPS, Raman, and SEM techniques. The results showed that the relative content of V2O3 and V2O5 was the key factor affecting the coating color value. At higher temperatures, more NH3 escaped from the electrolyte and the NH3 quantity participating in the reaction decreased, resulting in a decrease of V2O3 content, an increase in color value, and a darker coating. In the PEO process, VO3− mainly reacted to form V2O5, and then, the generated V2O5 reacted with NH3 to form V2O3.

Effects of Matrix Silicon Content on the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation of Al-Si Alloys Using Different Power Modes

The plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of pure Al and Al alloys containing 4, 9, 12, or 15 wt.% Si were investigated under pulsed bipolar current and pulsed bipolar voltage modes, respectively. It was determined that the discharge sparks preferentially occurred on the SiO2 relative to the Al2O3 during the initial stage of PEO processing regardless of the power mode. Following 30 min of PEO treatment under the two modes, the thicknesses of the layers decreased, whereas their specific energy consumption increased with increasing Si content in the matrix. The presence of primary Si in the alloy with 15 wt.% Si had a significantly negative effect on the PEO process in the pulsed bipolar current mode: The layer thickness decreased by 45%, and its specific energy consumption increased by 52%, compared with those on pure Al. However, in the pulsed bipolar voltage mode, the layer thickness on the evaluated samples only decreased slightly, and it became much more similar after treatment.

Durability Performances of Aramid Fiber Reinforced Polymer as Reinforcement Material for Concrete Structures in Cold Regions

A series of tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical performances of aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP) and its epoxy resin matrix after 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 freeze-thaw cycles in the dry air, respectively. After a given number of freeze-thaw cycles, the residual tensile strength and elastic modulus of AFRP specimens were measured, and the lap-shear strength of epoxy resin adhesive specimens was gained. Test results show that: (1) Variation of the elastic modulus of AFRP with the increasing of the freeze-thaw cycles exhibits the same tendency as the tensile strength did. They increase in the first 20 to 40 cycles and then decrease till the end of 80 cycles; (2) The tensile strength and elastic modulus of AFRP decreases by 5.1% and 8.2%, respectively, after 80 cycles as compared with that kept in the laboratory environments. However, the effect of the freeze-thaw cycling in the dry air on the tensile properties of CFRP is very limited within 80 cycles; (3) The freeze-thaw cycling in the dry air of this study has an adverse effect on the adhesive property of the epoxy resin, which could be regarded as the evidence for the degradation of the interface between aramid/carbon fiber and matrix.

Formation and Characterization Analysis of a Chromium-Free Conversion Coating on Mg Alloy Prepared in a Mo-Mn-V Based Weak Acid Solution

A molybdenum-manganese-vanadium conversion coating (MMVCC) was successfully developed on AZ31B Mg alloy by immersion in a weak acid solution. The FT-IR, SEM, XPS, TEM and electrochemical workstation were used to investigate the morphology, composition, formation process and corrosion resistance of the MMVCC. The results showed that the MMVCC was tightly bonded with the substrate in which the interface exhibited few bubbles and its thickness increased from 273 nm to 1068 nm with the increase of the immersion time from 1 to 15 minutes. The MMVCC was mainly composed of molybdenum oxides, manganese oxides, vanadium oxides, magnesium hydroxides/oxides, and metal complexes (Mo, Mn, V, Mg, etc). The MMVCC showed superior corrosion properties compared with the substrate and presented optimal corrosion resistance when the forming time was 15 minutes. The formation process of MMVCC was proposed and discussed based on the results of the XPS and TEM. The main salt (NH4)2MoO4 is changed into MoO2 and MoO3. KMnO4 is a strong oxidizing agent and therefore stable MnO2 is present in conversion coating. The used NaVO3 is changed into VO2 and V2O5 in conversion coating through reductive adsorption and oxidation reaction.The tartaric acid is complexed with metal ions in conversion coating.

Hybrid Contact for High‐Performance MoS₂ Transistors via Hard‐Mask Scanning Probe Lithography

Abstract The scaling down of transistors in silicon‐based complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) technology has reached critical limits, necessitating the exploration of novel materials and architectures. 2D semiconductors have emerged as promising candidates for continuing Moore's law beyond traditional silicon due to their atomic‐scale thickness and superior electrostatic control, which mitigate short channel effects. However, realizing the full potential of 2D materials in industrial applications requires overcoming challenges in fabricating scalable and CMOS‐compatible devices, particularly concerning metal‐semiconductor contacts. Here, a hybrid‐contact configuration is presented by developing a hard‐mask scanning probe lithography (SPL) for high‐performance molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) field‐effect transistors (FETs). After systematically comparing with the fabricated top‐contact and edge‐contact configurations, the hybrid‐contact substantially improves carrier injection efficiency, enabling an enhanced on‐current of 50.5 µA·µm⁻¹, an on/off ratio exceeding 5 × 10 10 , a reduced contact resistance of 2.14 kΩ·µm, and a Schottky barrier height of 26 meV, which is evidently illustrated by using the equivalent resistor network. The hard‐mask SPL also facilitates the high‐resolution nanoscale patterning on MoS 2 flakes with a feature size of ≈18 nm. This hybrid‐contact configurations along with hard‐mask SPL demonstrate potentials in fabricating high‐performance 2D FETs, paving the way for their practical application in future electronic devices.
