Effect of irrigation and fertigation scheduling on input use efficiency, yield and quality of guava cv. Lalit under intensive orcharding system

A study was conducted on guava cv. Lalit to find out the effect of irrigation and fertigation scheduling on WUE, FUE, moisture distribution pattern, leaf NPK content and nutrient uptake under intensive orcharding. The experiment consisted of 15 treatments combination comprising three different level of irrigation [50% (I1), 75% (I2) and 100% (I3) irrigation of pan evaporation] and five level of fertigation [20% (F1), 40% (F2), 60% (F3), 80% (F4) and 100% (F5) of recommended dose of NPK. Among the different treatment combination, maximum WUE (1038.50 kg ha−1 cm−1) was recorded under I1F4 treatment combination. Whereas, I3F5 resulted in maximum P content in leaves (0.28%), however, maximum yield plant−1 (6.75 kg), estimated yield ha−1 (33.75 t), uptake of N (652.92 kg ha−1), P (86.15 kg ha−1) and K (425.08 kg ha−1) were obtained under I2F4. Treatment combination I2F3 obtained a maximum net return (Rs. 2, 79,081.08) which was statistically at par with I2F4. Further, maximum B: C ratio (2.64) jointly recorded in I1F1 and I2F1, followed by (2.62) in I3F1. Treatments combination I2F3 and I2F4 were non significant between each other with respect to WUE, NPK uptake, yield tree−1 and estimated yield ha−1. Thus, based on the results of experiment we can conclude that treatment combination I2F3 (75% irrigation of PE + 60% of recommended dose of NPK) efficiently utilized water and fertilizers in form of yield in guava cv. Lalit under intensive orcharding system.

Influence of Gamma Irradiation on Flowering of Gladiolus (Gladiolus hybrida L.)

Influence of gamma irradiations was studied in ten varieties of gladiolus (Gladiolus hybrida L.) namely, Candyman Rose, American Beauty, Chandni, Red beauty, Punjab Morning, White Prosperity, Jester, Srijana, Psittacinous Hybrid and Priscilla were irradiated with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 kR doses. Earliest sprouting was recorded in 3.0 kr gamma treatment. Higher doses of gamma irradiation show lethal effect on various vegetative and floral traits. Maximum number of days taken to spike emergence was recorded with 3.5 kr dose of gamma irradiation. Earliest flowering was recorded with interaction of control with cv. Candyman Rose. Number of florets per spike reduced due to application of gamma doses, as doses increased and higher doses of gamma rays resulted in minimum number of florets per spike. Radiation treatments at higher doses caused delayed in spike initiation with decrease in spike length, number and size of florets.

Studies on the response of integrated nutrient management on leaf nutrient status of date palm under arid condition

The effect of organic and inorganic sources of NPK and foliar spray of micronutrient on plant leaf nutrient content was studied. Experimental findings revealed that treatment T18 significantly increased the plant leaves N, P, K, Fe and Zn content. Therefore, it is advocated that application of 100 kg FYM + 1.50 kg N + 1.00 kg P2O5 + 1.50 kg K2O + 1.00% FeSO4 + 0.50% ZnSO4 (T18) build up maximum leaf nutrient status and sustainable production of date palm in Bikaner condiation.

Impact of Hot Water Pre-Treatments on the Drying Efficiency and Quality of Dates cv. Medjool

Dates are considered high energy nutritional fruits as they are packed with plenty of minerals, vitamins and sugars. Among various options available for processing and value addition, dry dates are one of the best possible alternatives to convert doka/khalal stage fruit into a high value product. However, the technology for their production is limited to a few traditional date growing countries and research is limited in the countries with expanding areas. Thus, the protocol for development of dry dates was standardised and the effect of different blanching intervals (5, 10 and 15 min) on the drying and quality parameters were studied. The rate of drying, dehydration ratio and rehydration ratio were found to increase with increasing hot water dipping durations while a 10 min hot water dip was found to be best for retaining the best sensory parameters of taste, colour/appearance and flavour. The total colour difference (ΔE) was also maximal (71.10) in the date fruits exposed to a 10 min dip treatment. The reducing sugars decreased and non-reducing sugars increased with increasing hot water dipping periods while there was no significant variation in the total sugar content of the treated dates. The tannins responsible for acrid taste were also reduced to a minimum (1.43%) compared to control (2.52%) fruits. Thus, the fruits of date cv. Medjool being bulky and fibrous with more dry matter content are well suited for dry date preparation.

Abiotic stressful environments such as salinity, drought, and high temperature (heat) cause alterations in a wide range of physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes in plants. Abiotic stress, as a natural part of every ecosystem, will affect plants in a variety of ways. Plants also adapt very differently from one another, even from a plant living in the same area. A plant's first line of defense against abiotic stress is in its roots than leaf, on the leaf surface natural opening or stomata play important role in first level of adaptation towards survivality. All together plant against stress either escape or avoidance or tolerance mechanism maintain their turgor pressure in leaves that's depends on level on adaptation. Most practical approach in management of stress side is selection of crops and its varieties in arid environment.

Microbiological and Sensory Stability of Preserved Mango (Mallika) Pulp during Storage

This study was carried out to evaluate the best preservation way for mango pulp preservation. For this the pulp of mango were preserved with thirteen different treatment combinations viz., pulp preserved with potassium meta-bisulphite 0.05% (T1), pulp preserved with potassium meta-bisulphite 0.1% (T2), pulp preserved with sodium benzoate 0.05% (T3), pulp preserved with sodium benzoate 0.1% (T4), pulp preserved with sodium meta-bisulphite 0.05% (T5), pulp preserved with sodium meta bi-sulphite 0.1% (T6), pulp preserved with potassium sorbate 0.05 % (T7), pulp preserved with potassium sorbate 0.1 % (T8), pulp preserved with sodium benzoate + potassium sorbate 0.05 % each (T9), pulp preserved with potassium meta bi-sulphite + potassium sorbate 0.05 % each (T10), pulp preserved with sodium meta bi-sulphite + potassium sorbate 0.05 % (T11), refrigeration 4±2ºC (T12), frozen storage -20ºC (T13), These treatment combinations were evaluated under completely randomized design with four replications. The results revealed that preserved pulp at -20ºC) was better with over all sensory attributes viz., taste, flavour and aroma. Significant inhibition of the total bacterial count (TBC) and total fungal count (TFC) were observed on applying the specified concentrations, however minimum microbes growth was observed under frozen storage at -20ºC. All parameters of samples were observed at fortnight interval during storage (up to 90 days) and at end of storage acceptable pulp were used for different products (RTS, Squash and jam) preparation and analysed its quality. Storage time significantly (p<0.05) increased the CFU/g of the pulp samples as the maximum growth was observed after 90 days of storage. Sensory characteristics of the juice prepared from treated mango pulp samples were affected negatively on addition of preservatives and temperature, however, the samples were accepted by the judges even after three months of storage.
