Growth, biomass, carbon stocks, and sequestration in an age series of Populus deltoides plantations in Tarai region of central Himalaya

Growth, biomass, carbon storage, and carbon sequestration potential along an age series in Populus deltoides plantations were assessed. The growth rate of diameter at breast height and height was higher in trees of 4 to 7 years and 2 to 5 years, respectively. The total aboveground biomass (AGB) increased with age and reached its maximum (180.2 Mg ha^{-1}) at 11 years of age. Mean carbon concentration in aboveground components varied from 39.7% to 51.7%. Allometric equations were developed to estimate biomass and biomass carbon in different tree components, which had adjusted R squares greater than 94%. Aboveground carbon stocks in P. deltoides increased from 0.5 Mg ha^{-1} at 1 year to 90.1 Mg ha^{-1} at 11 years. The carbon sequestration rate (i.e. carbon sequestrated in wood products and by the substitution of biomass for coal) in mature plantations (7-11 years) varied from 5.8 to 6.5 Mg C ha^{-1} per year. Soil carbon stocks increased with age (1-11 years) from 61.2 to 66.8 Mg ha^{-1} and decreased with soil depth. Soil carbon stock in different ages of plantations varied from 63.9 to 83.8 Mg ha^{-1} at 0-30 cm depth, 57.5 to 60.1 Mg ha^{-1} at 30-60 cm depth, and 55.5 to 59.7 Mg ha^{-1} at 60-90 cm depth. The amount of total carbon stock (AGB and soil) increased from 64.4 Mg ha^{-1} at 1 year to 173.9 Mg ha^{-1} at 11 years. This study recommends P. deltoides planting as a viable option for sustainable production and carbon mitigation.

Genotype X Environment Interaction for Yield and Maturity In Soybean

Ten genetically diverse soybean strains, derived from six different crosses, along with three checks were evaluated for genotype x environment (G x E) interaction for yield and maturity under eight environments. The pooled analysis of variance for both the traits indicated highly significant differences between genotypes, environments and G x E interaction. Significant G x E interaction suggested the linear function of the additive environment effects and allowed for evaluation of genotypes for stability across the environments. The investigation revealed that the genotypes P1-1-1-1 (PK1053 x P7-1-1), P12-2-1 (SL284 x Bragg), P1–4 (SL284 x Bragg) and P4-1-2-3-3 (Himso333 x NRC2) were desirable and stable across the environments, while the strain P1–3 (SL284 x Bragg) was responsive to poor environments for seed yield. The genotypes, P12-3-3 (SL284 x Bragg) and P4-1-2-3-3 (Himso333 x NRC2) were the most stable across the environments for early maturity, whereas the genotype P1-1-1-1 (PK1053 x P7-1-1) was adapted to poor environments. Overall, the genotypes P1-1-1-1, P12-2-1, P1–4, P4-1-2-3-3 and P12-3-3 and P4-1-2-3-3 exhibited stability and general adaptability across the environments for high yield and early maturity, respectectively.

Biomass, carbon storage and carbon dioxide mitigation potential of plantations of Populus deltoides, Eucalyptus tereticornis, Dalbergia sissoo, Mangifera indica, Litchi chinensis and Prunus salicina were assessed. Being economically viable, such tree plantations are grown by farmers on a large scale in north India. The maximum total biomass (94.8 Mg ha− 1) was observed in a 10-year-old D. sissoo monoculture plantation, followed by an 8-year-old P. deltoides block plantation (63.0 Mg ha− 1). Carbon stocks ranged from 4.51 Mg ha− 1 in an 8-year-old P. deltoides boundary plantation to 43.39 Mg ha− 1 in D. sissoo plantation. The carbon sequestration rate for P. deltoides block and boundary plantations was estimated to be 2.75 and 0.43 Mg C ha− 1 year− 1, respectively. Eucalyptus boundary plantation sequestered 0.84 Mg C ha− 1 year− 1 while D. sissoo plantation sequestered 2.73 Mg C ha− 1 year− 1. Among fruit trees, the highest sequestration rate was recorded in M. indica (mango) plantation, with 1.43 Mg C ha− 1 year− 1.

Seed maturation indices for better regeneration and multiplication of haldu (Adina cordifolia)

Haldu (Adina cordifolia Roxb.) is one of the common associate species in moist mixed deciduous forests. In Western Himalayas, it is confined to outer slope up to 1000m. The wood of the species is used for making doors and window frames, plywood. The species is also heavily exploited for fuel wood and fodder. Fruits of Adina cordifolia were collected from four collection sites, (viz Tanda range, Bhakara range, Barheni range and Lalkuan range at five different collection dates, viz 1st week of April, 2nd week of April, 3rd week of April, 4th week of April and 1st week of May) for assessing seed maturation indicators. The results revealed significant variation in collection date and collection site for germination parameters. The change in fruit colour of A. cordifolia from light green to light brown and moisture content of fruit between 38 to 46% was adjudged useful indicator of seed maturation. Germination was maximum in seeds collected during first week of May at all the sites.
