Visualization methods for understanding the dynamic electroadhesion phenomenon

Experimental investigation into the surface potential and electric field visualization of an electroadhesion system is presented for understanding the dynamic electroadhesion phenomenon. The indirect experimental approach has been based on measuring surface potentials on the surface of an electroadhesive pad by an electrostatic voltmeter. The direct approach has been based on charging and discharging the electroadhesive pad in a viscous oil mixed with lightweight particles. The visualization of the dynamic field distribution of electroadhesive pads can be a useful method to understand the dynamic electroadhesion phenomenon. In addition, indication of different field distributions of different pad geometries can be obtained through the method demonstrated here. Furthermore, the method is useful for instructors or lecturers to showcase or teach the dynamic electroadhesion phenomenon.

Investigation of relationship between interfacial electroadhesive force and surface texture

A novel investigation into the relationship between the obtainable interfacial electroadhesive forces and different surface textures is presented in this paper. Different surface textures were generated then characterized based on a recognized areal-based non-contact surface texture measurement platform and procedure. An advanced electroadhesive force measurement platform and procedure were then implemented to measure the obtainable electroadhesive forces on those different surface textures. The results show that the obtained interfacial electroadhesive forces increase with decreasing Sq (root mean square height) value of the substrate surface provided that the difference in Sq between the different substrates is over 5 μm. Also, the higher the applied voltage, the larger the relative increase in electroadhesive forces observed. However, when the difference of Sq value between different substrate surfaces is below 2 μm, the obtained interfacial electroadhesive forces do not necessarily increase with decreasing Sq. Furthermore, the obtainable electroadhesive forces are not necessarily the same when the Sq value of two substrate surfaces are the same due to the fact that the direction of the surface texture plays an important role in achieving electroadhesive forces.

Experimental study of a flexible and environmentally stable electroadhesive device

Electroadhesion is a promising adhesion mechanism for robotics and material handling applications due to several distinctive advantages it has over existing technologies. These advantages include enhanced adaptability, gentle/flexible handling, reduced complexity, and ultra-low energy consumption. Unstable electroadhesive forces, however, can arise in ambient environments. Electroadhesive devices that can produce stable forces in changing environments are thus desirable. In this study, a flexible and environmentally stable electroadhesive device was designed and manufactured by conformally coating a layer of barium titanate dielectric on a chemically etched thin copper laminate. The results, obtained from an advanced electroadhesive “normal force” testing platform, show that only a relative difference of 5.94% in the normal force direction was observed. This was achieved when the relative humidity changed from 25% to 53%, temperature from 13.7 °C to 32.8 °C, and atmospheric pressure from 999 hPa to 1016.9 hPa. This environmentally stable electroadhesive device may promote the application of the electroadhesion technology.

A soft and shape-adaptive electroadhesive composite gripper with proprioceptive and exteroceptive capabilities

Electroadhesion is a promising adhesion mechanism for robotics and material handling applications with advantages over existing technologies including enhanced adaptability, gentle/flexible handling, reduced complexity, and ultra-low energy consumption. Current electroadhesive (EA) grippers, however, require extra components and their associated electronics to make them sensorially capable. In addition, current planar EA grippers have difficulty adhering to non-planar surfaces and picking up non-flat objects. We present a monolithic, shape-adaptive, and self-sensing EA composite with integral dielectric elastomer actuation (DEA). This new EA-DEA composite gripper is not only proprioceptive (it can sense internal deformations) and exteroceptive (it can sense and differentiate between surfaces that it touches) but can also actively morph and adapt to curved surfaces. By integrating a high voltage self-sensing unit with the EA-DEA composite, coupled gripping and sensing capabilities can be achieved. This is because combined actions of membrane deformations by the Maxwell force and surface attraction by the EA force can be obtained by using only one voltage source due to the employment of a dual-mode parallel-and-coplanar electrode pattern. The proposed approach has the potential to significantly improve the intelligence of EA gripping technologies and increase their use in intelligent material sorting, grasping, and manipulation applications.

In recent years, Japan has set up as barriers strict technical criteria and regulations for quality regis- tration, evaluating procedures, commodity inspection and quarantine stipulation, and so on. The paper points out that Japanese technical barriers will become comprehensive with more attention to combination with intel- lectual property and the above- said aspects will become more important, and that the technical criteria will be instituted mainly by the non- government organizations and the crtieria and relevant acts will be renewed in a rapid way.

Electroactive Textile Actuators for Breathability Control and Thermal Regulation Devices

Smart fabrics offer the potential for a new generation of soft robotics and wearable technologies through the fusion of smart materials, textiles and electrical circuitries. Conductive and stretchable textiles have inherent compliance and low resistance that are suitable for driving artificial muscle actuators and are potentially safer electrode materials for soft actuation technologies. We demonstrate how soft electroactive actuating structures can be designed and fabricated from conducting textiles. We first quantitatively analyse a range of stretchable conductive textiles for dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs). We found that conductive-knit textiles are more suitable for unidirectional DEA applications due to the largest difference (150%) in principle strain axes, whereas isotropic textiles are more suited to bidirectional DEA applications due to the smallest (11.1%) principle strain difference. Finally, we demonstrate controllable breathability through a planar e-textile DEA-driven skin and show thermal regulation in a wearable prototype that exploits soft actuation and kirigami.
