We explored the possibility of touch-screen-like interaction with a remote control in the TV-viewing environment. A shadow representing the user's thumb touches the screen, presses a button, flicks a cover-flow list, and draws a simple stroke, while the thumb stays and moves on and above the touchpad. In order to implement the concept we developed an optical touchpad for tracking the thumb hovering over its surface, and designed a TV application to demonstrate possible new interaction styles. Throughout two iterations of prototyping, we corrected some of our false expectations, and also verified its potential as a viable option for a TV remote control. This paper presents technical issues and requirements for the hover-tracking touchpad and a complete report of our user studies to explore touch-screen-like interaction for the TV.

SOUND BOUND

SOUND BOUND is an interactive graphic equalizer. It displays the magnitude of frequency akin to traditional graphic equalizers or other sound visualizers, and it also allows the user to distort and create sounds by touch interaction. The user can create virtual balls or instrument icons on the screen and can cause these objects to collide with the equalizer by using a physics engine. When virtual balls collide with the equalizer bars, the magnitude of certain frequencies is amplified. When equalizer bars strikes an instruments icon, it create an instrumental sound effect. Until the invention of SOUND BOUND, the activities involved in listening to music have been essentially passive and static. SOUND BOUND actively engages people in the activity of listening to music and enhances their experience as well.

TapBoard

We propose the TapBoard, a touch screen software keyboard that regards tapping actions as keystrokes, and other touches as touched states. In a series of user studies, we could validate the effectiveness of the TapBoard concept. First, we could show that tapping to type is in fact compatible with the existing typing skill of most touch screen keyboard users. Second, users could soon adapt to the TapBoard and learn to rest their fingers in a touched state. Finally, we confirm by a controlled experiment that there is no difference in the text entry performance between the TapBoard and a traditional touch screen software keyboard. In addition to these experimental results, we demonstrate a few new interaction techniques that will be made possible by the TapBoard.

Puppet Book: Digital Storybook with Back-of-Device Puppeteering Interface for Parent and Child

Puppet Book is a new concept of a digital storybook that is incorporated with puppetry. It enables parents to manipulate characters in real-time through a back-of-device interface while reading a storybook to their children. Puppet Book aims to provide enhanced expressiveness for parents and immersion for children. The Puppet Book interface was implemented carefully to minimize parents' task workload and maximize the expressiveness of puppeteering. A user study with 11 parent-child groups was conducted. Parents who easily adapted to the interface showed a higher motivation to tell the story, by identifying themselves with the characters. Children showed increased concentration and motivation for reading.

Designing Metamaterial Cells to Enrich Thermoforming 3D Printed Object for Post-Print Modification

In this paper, we present a metamaterial structure called thermoformable cells, TF-Cells, to enrich thermoforming for post-print modification. So far, thermoforming is limitedly applied for modifying a 3D printed object due to its low thermal conductivity. TF-Cells consists of beam arrays that affluently pass hot air and have high heat transference. Through heating the embedded TF-Cells of the printed object, users can modify not only the deeper area of the object surface but also its form factor. With a series of technical experiments, we investigated TF-Cells' thermoformability, depending on their structure's parameters, orientations, and heating conditions. Next, we present a series of compound cells consisting of TF-Cells and solid structure to adjust stiffness or reduce undesirable shape deformation. Adapting the results from the experiments, we built a simple tool for embedding TF-Cells into a 3D model. Using the tool, we implemented examples under contexts of mechanical fitting, ergonomic fitting, and aesthetic tuning.

Defining basic archetypes of an intelligent agent’s behaviour in an open-ended interactive environment

Despite the emergence of advanced technologies, the behavioural complexities remain underexplored, especially from the viewpoint of their potential in interactive installations. This study aims to explore the future interactivity of an agent’s behaviour by envisioning speculative future human operations using a human-controlled interactive installation called LumiLand. This empirical study reveals that an agent can craft a user experience by (1) controlling the plot, (2) cocreating content with a user in a social manner, and (3) promptly adjusting undefined behaviours and situations. Based on Janlert and Stolterman’s interaction model, we present an interaction flow with four primary classifications: Leading, Responding, Poking, and Linking. We believe that a human-centered approach for understanding agent interactivity could help create entertaining human–computer interactions (HCI) by improving the agent design and exploring the challenges that will be faced during such interactions.

TapBoard

A physical keyboard key has three states, whereas a touch screen usually has only two. Due to this difference, the state corresponding to the touched state of a physical key is missing in a touch screen keyboard. This touched state is an important factor in the usability of a keyboard. In order to recover the role of a touched state in a touch screen, we propose the TapBoard, a touch screen software keyboard that regards tapping actions as keystrokes and other touches as the touched state. In a series of user studies, we validate the effectiveness of the TapBoard concept. First, we show that tapping to type is in fact compatible with the existing typing skill of most touch screen keyboard users. Second, users quickly adapt to the TapBoard and learn to rest their fingers in the touched state. Kinetic tiles

We propose and demonstrate Kinetic Tiles, modular con-struction units for Interactive Kinetic Surfaces (IKSs). We aimed to design Kinetic Tiles to be accessible and available so that users can construct IKSs easily and rapidly. The components of Kinetic Tiles are inexpensive and easily available. In addition, the use of magnetic force enables the separation of the surface material and actuators so that users only interact with the tile modules as if constructing a tile mosaic. Kinetic Tiles can be utilized as a new design and architectural material that allows the surfaces of everyday objects and spaces to convey ambient and pleasurable kinetic expressions.
