Effects of w/b ratio, fly ash, and chloride content on corrosion of reinforcing steel

Abstract To predict the corrosion of reinforcing steel, the electrochemical properties of reinforcing steel with different concrete mix proportions and chloride content were studied. The water to binder ratio of concrete was varied (0.45 and 0.60). Coal fly ash was used to replace OPC (0 and 30% by weight of the total binder). The initial chloride was 0, 2, and 4% by weight of concrete. Potentiodynamic polarization testing was conducted by controlling the moisture of specimens. The Tafel slope, corrosion potential, and corrosion rate were analyzed from the testing results. Results show that chloride content significantly affects the electrochemical properties of reinforcing steel. The anodic Tafel slope decreased as chloride content increased. The cathodic Tafel slope increased when the water to binder ratio decreased, or when the fly ash content increased due to a denser concrete pore structure, limiting oxygen diffusion. Results from this study can be used to simulate the corrosion of reinforcing steel and predict the service life of reinforced concrete structures. Also, the electrochemical compatibility between existing and repaired sections can be evaluated to ensure the durability of repaired RC structures.

Atmospheric corrosion behaviors of 6000-series aluminum alloy under tropical climate influences of Thailand

Abstract The current research was aimed to investigate atmospheric corrosion behaviors of 6005A and 6082 aluminum alloys for a certain application in high-speed railway employed for service in Thailand. Actual exposure atmospheric test with the maximum period of 18 months was conducted at urban and marine–coastal environments. After completion of actual exposure test, corrosion behaviors of the uncoated alloys were determined based on corrosion mass loss and pitting corrosion aspects. It turned out that remarkable corrosion severity found at marine–coastal environment with respect to urban environment was attributed to higher deposition rates of cumulative chloride (around 1331 mg m −2 day −1 ) and sulfur dioxide (around 200 mg m −2 day −1 ) together with higher levels of RH (>80%) for the entire year of exposure. The alloys exposed at marine–coastal environment for 18 months long revealed the corrosion mass loss of approximately 2 g m −2 , average pit depth of greater than 80 μm, and density of around 3 pits⋅cm −2 .

Electrochemical compatibility of patching repaired reinforced concrete: experimental and numerical approach

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of potential of steel in patching-repaired concrete. Reinforced concrete specimens were prepared with and without patching repair, made with various concrete mix proportions. Experimental results revealed that patching repair showed good effectiveness for restoring corroded reinforced concrete structures. The highest half-cell potential of steel was observed in a repaired area (patch), surrounded by a lower potential of steel in a non-repaired area (substrate). A comparison between individual concrete and patching-repaired concrete revealed that there was a redistribution of the potential along with the steel in patching-repaired concrete. The variation of the potential depended on the parameters of concrete, which include the water to binder ratio, fly ash content, and chloride content. Finally, a numerical model to simulate the electrochemical corrosion of steel showed good agreement with the measured potential.

Preliminary Result of a Wide-band Radio Frequency Moisture Sensor for Oil and Gas Pipe Thermal Insulator

This paper presents the preliminary measurement result of the wide-band radio frequency (RF) moisture sensor for oil and gas pipe thermal insulator. The thermal insulator with metal jacket such as fiberglass, mineral wool, rock wool, cellulose, polyurethane foam, polyurethane, etc. is employed around pipelines, piping and other equipment to control the temperature during transfer of substance. The corrosion under thermal insulator (CUI) due to salt water is the most dangerous problem when undetected. The indirect method for detecting CUI employs the thermal insulator moisture data. The advantages of the proposed wide-band RF moisture sensor are a wide detection rage compared to the conventional technique and high accuracy. The proposed system consists the voltage control oscillate (VCO) of 1.2 GHz to 2.7 GHz, the power detector, the microcontroller and transmitting (Tx) RF probe and receiving RF probe.

Cooperative and synergistic corrosion inhibition of AA 7075-T6 by praseodymium and CaSO₄

Abstract In a primer coating system used in aerospace applications to protect aluminum alloy substrate, praseodymium is added as corrosion inhibitors while CaSO 4 is primarily added as filler materials. The interaction of Pr and CaSO 4 is unknown. The goal of this study is to characterize any cooperative or synergistic inhibition between these two. Cooperative inhibition can be defined when one inhibitor enhances inhibiting effect of the other that already has inhibiting ability. Synergistic inhibition can be defined when one inhibitor activates the inhibiting effect of the other that originally does not inhibit. Optical profilometry, electrochemical techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize corrosion results. The results showed that several pit parameters will affirm the inhibition effect. Electrochemical results cannot always detect modest corrosion inhibitors. Cooperative inhibition was detected in pH 5 while synergistic inhibition was observed in pH 8. Synergistic inhibition occurs because SO 4 2− helps with gelation of Pr to passivate the surface.

Localized Corrosion Inhibition of 7075-T6 by Calcium Sulfate

Aluminum alloy 7075-T6 is used in aerospace applications as a result of its high strength-to-weight ratio, but this material is susceptible to localized corrosion in condensing atmospheric exposure conditions and is usually protected with an anti-corrosion coating system. CaSO4 is sometimes found as an extender component in corrosion inhibition primer pigment systems, such as commercial Pr-rich primer, which has been qualified for military use. The role CaSO4 might play in corrosion protection afforded by the coating system has not been addressed thoroughly in the scientific literature. The goal of this study was to isolate and characterize any inhibiting effect of CaSO4 on AA7075-T6 to understand how it might play a role in non-chromate primer coatings.
