High power Raman second stokes generation in a methane filled hollow core fiber

We demonstrate a multi-watt, picosecond pulse duration laser source by exploiting a cascaded Raman process to the second Stokes signal at a wavelength of 2.58 μm in a methane-filled Nested Anti-Resonant Nodeless fiber from a 1 μm disk laser source. A maximum average power of 2.89 W (14.45 μJ) is produced in a 160 cm length of custom-designed and in-house fabricated fiber filled with methane at a pressure of 2 bar. The impact of gas pressure and propagation distance on the second Stokes signal power are investigated experimentally. The experimental results are simulated by solving the Generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with the experiment carefully modelled by accounting for the impacts of pressure dependent gas-light interactions along the pressure gradient of the fiber. This work offers a laser source for a variety of applications as well as expanding the modelling space to methane filled fibers including pressure gradients, and nonlinear optical activity in the presence of infrared gas absorption.

Simultaneous Regeneration of 4×160-Gbit/s WDM and PDM Channels in a Single Highly Nonlinear Fiber

We demonstrate simultaneous regeneration of 4×160-Gbit/s signals in a HNLF. The receiver powers at the BER of 10−9 are improved by 1.9 dB, 1.8 dB, 1.6 dB and 1.5 dB for the four channels, respectively.

All-optical characterization of large-signal modulation bandwidth of a monolithically integrated DFB-EA

We use an all-optical method to characterize the modulation bandwidth of a DFB-EA designed for 100 Gb/s Ethernet. In a large-signal wavelength conversion set-up, we show the device has an all-optical bandwidth of 83 GHz.

Parametric Amplification of a 640 Gbit/s RZ-DPSK Signal

We report the first demonstration and characterization of parametric amplification of a 640Gbit/s RZ-DPSK OTDM signal. With proper design of the fiber parametric amplifier, error-free amplification with less than 1 dB penalty has been achieved.

Demultiplexing of OTDM-DPSK signals based on a single semiconductor optical amplifier and optical filtering

We propose and demonstrate the use of a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and optical filtering to time demultiplex tributaries from an optical time division multiplexing-differential phase shift keying (OTDM-DPSK) signal. The scheme takes advantage of the fact that phase variations added to the target channel by cross-phase modulation from the control signal are effectively subtracted in the differential demodulation scheme employed for DPSK signals. Demultiplexing from 80 to 40 Gbit/s is demonstrated with moderate power penalty using an SOA with recovery time twice as long as the bit period at 80 Gbit/s. Large dynamic ranges for the input power and SOA current are experimentally demonstrated. The scheme is expected to be scalable toward higher bit rates.

160 Gb/s All-Optical Packet Switched Network Operation over 110 km of Field Installed Fiber

We report for the first time SOA-based clock recovery and demultiplexing of 40-Gb/s channels from 640 Gb/s OTDM signals over 50-km link. The system operates at low power and has the potential to be integrated.
