A combined experimental and theoretical study on molecular and vibrational structure of E-N¢ (ICINH) had been carried out. The FTIR, FT-Raman and UV-Vis spectra of ICINH were recorded in the solid phase. The optimized geometry was calculated by B3LYP method with 6-311++G(d,p) level of basis set. The harmonic vibrational frequencies, IR intensities and Raman scattering activities of the title compound were calculated at same level of theory. The scaled theoretical wavenumber showed very good agreement with the experimental values. The mulliken charges and thermodynamic functions of the ICINH were also performed at same level of theory. NLO and a study on the electronic properties such as excitation energies and wavelength, were performed by TD-DFT approach. HOMO–LUMO energy gap was also calculated and interpreted.

X-Ray Peak Profile Analysis of Nanostructured Hydroxyapatite and Fluorapatite

389  Abstract—In present study, X-ray peak profile analysis (XPPA) by modified Williamson-Hall (W-H) models, namely W-H-isotropic strain model (W-H-ISM), W-H-anisotropic strain model (W-H-ASM) and W-H-energy density model (W-H-EDM), was employed to estimate the microstructural parameters such as, crystallite size, lattice strain, lattice deformation stress and deformation energy density from the powder diffraction data obtained for the microwave synthesized hydroxyapatite (HA) and fluorapatite (FA) nanoparticles prepared under identical processing conditions of mixing and aging. The as-prepared powder particles were also characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) method. The average crystallite size values estimated for HA and FA by XPPA were correlated to their respective transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis results. In addition, the estimated values of HA and FA were correlated to their in-vitro dissolution characteristics studied by ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) titrimetric method. It is found that the average crystallite size estimated by W-H models is in good agreement with TEM results. The controlled in-vitro dissolution behavior of FA was found to be resulted out of its higher crystallite size, lower lattice strain and lower dislocation density compared to that of HA.

GOLD SUPPORTED CALCIUM DEFICIENT HYDROXYAPATITE FOR ROOM TEMPERATURECOOXIDATION

Gold supported hydroxyapatite (HA) and calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) was studied for the room temperature CO oxidation. Nanostructured gold catalyst has been prepared by deposition precipitation method, whereas HA was synthesized by microwave synthesis. Inorder to understand the influence of surface properties of HA, support HA was synthesized with different Ca/P ratios (1.67, 1.62, 1.57, 1.534 and 1.5). The gold supported catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, ICP-OES and TEM. Typical results indicate that gold supported 1.57 HA shows higher activity compared to other HA catalysts (1.67, 1.62, 1.534 and 1.5) which may be due to the presence of optimum number of acidic and basic sites.

Superior properties and behaviour of coatings produced on nanostructured titanium by PEO coupled with the EPD process

Abstract Surface modification of commercially pure Grade 4 coarse-grained titanium (CG-Ti) and nano-grained titanium (n-Ti) by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and plasma electrolytic oxidation conjugated with electrophoretic deposition (PEO-EPD) processes is reported in the present study. Two different coatings were developed on each CG-Ti and n-Ti in phosphate-based electrolytes without and with the incorporation of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles. The phase composition, morphology (surface and cross-sectional), corrosion resistance, surface roughness, and scratch-resistance of the fabricated coatings were thoroughly studied and analysed. The L-929 fibroblast cells were used for assessing the in-vitro cell viability. The L-929 cells cultured on PEO-EPD treated CG-Ti, and n-Ti samples exhibited higher cell growth than PEO treated CG-Ti and n-Ti samples. Among all the PEO and PEO-EPD treated samples, the PEO-EPD treated n-Ti sample showed significantly better corrosion resistance (i corr = 8.85 × 10 −7 mA cm −2 ), lower contact angle (40°), and good adhesion strength (L c = 29 N), demonstrating the importance of the nanostructuring of the titanium substrate for the properties of the coating. The origin of the discovered enhancement in the properties of the modified PEO coating produced on nanostructured titanium was examined and discussed. After soaking in SBF for 14 days, the PEO-EPD treated sample is wholly covered with apatite layer indicating its good bioactivity

Experimental Investigation on Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Hydroxyapatite by the Mechanochemical Method

Mechanochemical synthesis is a simple and effective method to prepare ceramic compounds with nanosize. The present work was aimed at investigating the application of the mechanochemical method to synthesize nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HA). The shortest milling time required for synthesizing HA, using Ca (OH) 2 and (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 as precursor materials was also established. The synthesized samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to determine the phases evolved, functional groups present and to assess the size and morphology of the particles, respectively. Further, the thermal stability of the synthesized powders was investigated by heating to a temperature of 900 °C with a dwell time of 2 h. The broadening of the XRD peaks was used to find out the crystallite size and Williamson-Hall plots were used to estimate the lattice strain. The XRD and FTIR results demonstrated that the complete formation of the HA phase by mechanochemical method has started within a milling time of 30 min using Ca (OH) 2 and (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 as precursors and the Ca/P ratio of the HA increased with increasing milling time. The TEM micrographs demonstrated that the HA particles are nanosized, non-spherical and highly agglomerated.
