Hydrothermal synthesis of mesoporous silica spheres: effect of the cooling process

Hydrothermal methods have been widely used in the fabrication of silica-based micro-/nanomaterials. In this paper, we comprehensively investigated dissolution/regrowth kinetics of solid silica in alkaline media under relatively high temperature hydrothermal conditions (typically 180 °C). A decoupled dissolution and regrowth mechanism was proposed to explain the transformation of solid silica to mesoporous silica spheres in the presence of CTAB surfactant. Especially, we discovered that the "post-synthesis" sample cooling process plays a great role in the present hydrothermal process. The proposed mechanism can be utilized for the preparation of mesoporous silica spheres from various silica sources. Moreover, the mechanism is also applicable to other nonsurfactant hydrothermal processes.

Mechanical properties, morphology and thermal conductivity of polyamide composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets, Al₂O₃and graphite

In this work, PA6/PA66/GNP thermal composites were prepared via a melt blending method. Mechanical properties, morphology and thermal properties of PA6/PA66/GNP composites were investigated. The thermal conductivity of composite containing 50 wt-% of graphene nanoplatelets was measured as 5·03 W m–1 K–1 at 30°C. When the Al2O3 was replaced for graphene nanoplatelets, the thermal conductivity of composites decreased, but the mechanical properties improved. The optimum amount of Al2O3 which replaced graphene nanoplatelets is 10%. When graphite was used to replace for graphene nanoplatelets, thermal conductivity basically remained unchanged but mechanical properties decreased.

(Ni,Mg)₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄ Solid-Solution Nanotubes Supported by Sub-0.06 wt % Palladium as a Robust High-Efficiency Catalyst for Suzuki–Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reactions

(Ni(1-x),Mg(x))(3)Si(2)O(5)(OH)(4) solid-solution nanotubes (NTs) with tunable compositions were hydrothermally synthesized by altering the molar ratio of Mg(2+) to Ni(2+). The as-synthesized NTs were loaded with sub-0.06 wt % palladium (Pd; ∼0.045 wt %) for Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) coupling reactions between iodobenzene or 4-iodotoluene and phenylboronic acid. The (Ni,Mg)(3)Si(2)O(5)(OH)(4) (Mg(2+):Ni(2+) = 1.0:1.0) NTs supported by 0.045 wt % Pd promoted the iodobenzene-participated coupling reaction with a high yield of >99%, an excellent recycling catalytic performance during 10 cycles of catalysis with yields of ∼99%, and also an extremely low Pd releasing level of ∼0.02 ppm. High-activity Pd and PdO clusters, multitudes of dislocations, and defects and terraces contained within the NTs should contribute to the (Ni,Mg)(3)Si(2)O(5)(OH)(4) (Mg(2+):Ni(2+) = 1.0:1.0) NTs supported by 0.045 wt % Pd as a robust, reusable, and high-efficiency catalyst for SM coupling reactions with an extremely low Pd releasing level. The present hydrothermally stable (Ni,Mg)(3)Si(2)O(5)(OH)(4) (Mg(2+):Ni(2+) = 1.0:1.0) solid-solution silicate NTs provided an ideal alternative tubular-structured support for noble- or transition-metal catalysts with low Pd loading, good recycling, and extremely low ppb levels of Pd release, which could also be extended to some other SM coupling reactions.

Highly Porous Thermoelectric Nanocomposites with Low Thermal Conductivity and High Figure of Merit from Large‐Scale Solution‐Synthesized Bi₂Te_2.5Se_0.5 Hollow Nanostructures

Abstract To enhance the performance of thermoelectric materials and enable access to their widespread applications, it is beneficial yet challenging to synthesize hollow nanostructures in large quantities, with high porosity, low thermal conductivity ( κ ) and excellent figure of merit ( z T ). Herein we report a scalable (ca. 11.0 g per batch) and low‐temperature colloidal processing route for Bi 2 Te 2.5 Se 0.5 hollow nanostructures. They are sintered into porous, bulk nanocomposites (phi 10 mm× h 10 mm) with low κ (0.48 W m −1 K −1 ) and the highest z T (1.18) among state‐of‐the‐art Bi 2 Te 3− x Se x materilas. Additional benefits of the unprecedented low relative density (68–77 %) are the large demand reduction of raw materials and the improved portability. This method can be adopted to fabricate other porous phase‐transition and thermoelectric chalcogenide materials and will pave the way for the implementation of hollow nanostructures in other fields.

Abstract Reconstructing canonical binary compounds by inserting a third agent can significantly modify their electronic and phonon structures. Therefore, it has inspired the semiconductor communities in various fields. Introducing this paradigm will potentially revolutionize thermoelectrics as well. Using a solution synthesis, Bi 2 S 3 was rebuilt by adding disordered Bi and weakly bonded I. These new structural motifs and the altered crystal symmetry induce prominent changes in electrical and thermal transport, resulting in a great enhancement of the figure of merit. The as‐obtained nanostructured Bi 13 S 18 I 2 is the first non‐toxic, cost‐efficient, and solution‐processable n‐type material with z T =1.0.

One‐Pot, Template‐Free Synthesis of PdPt Single‐Crystalline Hollow Cubes with Enhanced Catalytic Activity

Abstract Hollow structures have attracted ever‐growing interest owing to their various excellent properties. However, a facile strategy for their fabrication is still desired. Herein, PdPt alloy with three different morphologies, that is, cubes, hollow cubes, and truncated octahedrons, is synthesized by using a one‐pot, template‐free method. The mechanism and dynamics of this system is also studied in detail. In particular, the hollow cubic structure represents enhanced catalytic activity in both coupling reactions and in the electrochemical oxidation of formic acid.

Dramatic Enhancement of Thermoelectric Performance in PbTe by Unconventional Grain Shrinking in the Sintering Process

Nanostructure engineering is a key strategy for tailoring properties in the fields of batteries, solar cells, thermoelectrics, and so on. Limited by grain coarsening, however, the nanostructure effect gradually degrades during the materials' manufacturing and in-service period. Herein, a strategy of cleavage-fracture for grain shrinking is developed in a Pb0.98 Sb0.02 Te sample during sintering, and the grain size remains stable after repeated tests. Moreover, the initial grain boundary is filled by fractured slender grains and enriched by dislocations, evolving into a hierarchical grain-boundary structure. The lattice thermal conductivity (klat ) is greatly reduced to approach the amorphous limit. As a result, a record-high ZT value of ≈1.9 is obtained at 815 K in the n-type Pb0.98 Sb0.02 Te sample and a decent efficiency of 6.7% in thermoelectric device. This strategy for grain shrinking will shed light on the application of nanostructure engineering under high temperature and extreme conditions in other material systems.

Draw-tower-grating-based Fabry-Perot interferometers for simultaneous measurements of temperature and salinity

In this paper, a fiber optic sensor with draw-tower-grating (DTG)-based Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) are proposed to measure the temperature and salinity of seawater simultaneously. The sensing structure utilizes DTG as the reflector, and two adjacent gratings can be cascaded to compose an FPI. By employing moisture-sensitive materials to the surface of the optical fiber, the variation in salinity can be measured by the axial strain applied by the coating on the sensing optical fiber. The salinity altering causes swelling or shrinking actions of the coating through absorbing or releasing water. Two different moisture-sensitive materials are chosen to eliminate the cross-sensitivity of temperature and salinity. The experimental results show that the sensor exhibits linear response to temperature and salinity changes with good repeatability and stability, and the temperature and salinity sensitivities are 12308.65 rad/°C and 95.02 rad/‰, respectively. The optical path configuration of the DTG sensing array matching compensation interferometer provides the possibility for efficient distributed solutions, which has promising potential for application in marine engineering.
