<title>Four-meter lunar engineering telescope</title>

The 16-meter diffraction limited lunar telescope incorporates a primary mirror with 312 one-meter segments; 3 nanometer active optics surface control with laser metrology and hexapod positioners; a space frame structure with one-millimeter stability; and a hexapod mount for pointing. The design data needed to limit risk in this development can be obtained by building a smaller engineering telescope on the moon with all of the features of the 16-meter design. This paper presents a 4.33-meter engineering telescope concept developed by the Summer 1990 Student Program of the NASA/JHU Space Grant Consortium Lunar Telescope Project. The primary mirror, made up of 18 one-meter hexagonal segments, is sized to provide interesting science as well as engineering data. The optics are configured as a Ritchey-Chretien with a coude relay to the focal plane beneath the surface. The optical path is continuously monitored with 3-nanometer precision interferometrically. An active optics processor and piezoelectric actuators operate to maintain the end-to-end optical configuration established by wave front sensing using a guide star. The mirror segments, consisting of a one-centimeter thick faceplate on 30-cm deep ribs, maintain the surface figure to a few nanometers under lunar gravity and thermal environment.

<title>Line-of-sight jitter of the Hubble Space Telescope</title>

We report on the results of a dedicated on-orbit test which we have performed to measure the line-of-sight jitter of the Hubble Space Telescope. The test, which made use of one of the science instruments on board the spacecraft, had a very high sensitivity (a fraction of a milliarcsecond) and covered all frequencies up to 500 Hz. As was previously known from gyroscope data analysis, the bulk of the line-of-sight jitter occurs at frequencies lower than 5 Hz and is caused by motion of the spacecraft body reacting against the oscillation of its appendages. However, the test indicates that there are also minor contributions by various modes of the telescope structure in the 15 - 30 Hz range and the vibration of the primary mirror at 61 Hz when it is excited by thermally induced shocks or the running of the tape recorder. There are also traces of a component around 300 Hz induced by the tape recorder.

By segmenting and folding the primary mirror, quite large telescopes can be packed into the nose cone of a rocket. Deployed after launch, initial optical performance can be quite poor, due to deployment errors, thermal deformation, fabrication errors and other causes. We describe an automatic control system for capturing, aligning, phasing, and deforming the optics of such a telescope, going from initial cm-level wavefront errors to diffraction-limited observatory operations. This system was developed for the Next Generation Space Telescope and is being tested on the NGST Wavefront Control Testbed.
