Effect of ground plane and chamber walls on antenna input impedance

Results of an experimental study undertaken to measure the effect of ground plane and absorber walls on the input impedance of antennas used in electromagnetic compatibility measurements are presented. Measured data for real impedance of biconical, log-periodic and dipole antennas as a function of height (1-2 m) and frequency (50 MHz-1 GHz) show significant variation of ground plane interaction. Horizontally polarized antennas showed more variation than vertically polarized antennas. Biconical antennas with pulse-transformer type baluns show more variation than those with matched hybrid baluns. Resonant antennas show more significant changes near their resonant frequency. All of these effects are more pronounced at lower frequencies.< >

Time-domain array factor for UWB antenna array

A cross-correlation formulation for the computation of time-domain array factor for ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna arrays is presented. In addition, a dual band UWB waveform is proposed for high directivity and high-resolution radar imaging. The dual band UWB waveform is based on a frequency truncated, Gaussian modulated, higher-order sinusoidal UWB pulse.

A simple theoretical model is developed for studying the magnetic behavior of films at microwave frequencies, and verified experimentally on the ferrite-polymer thick-film samples. The measured values of permeability by the proposed model/technique are found to be in good agreement with the values obtained by the standard cavity perturbation technique.

Possible degradation mechanism of BSCCO superconductors

A detailed study of the effect of ambient and humid atmosphere on the stability and physical properties of single and multiphasic samples of a BSCCO superconductor has been carried out. It has been observed that, on exposure to atmosphere for a period of one year, the single-phase samples 2223 or 2212 did not show any phase decomposition. However, a decrease in Tc was observed in these samples. Mixed-phase samples showed the partial conversion of the 2223 phase into the 2212 phase on the surface with a corresponding decrease in Tc, depending upon the initial amount of added Pb. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the multiphase, leaded samples showed the decrease in the ratio of Cu2+/Cu1+ as well as the formation of various surface carbonates responsible for the degradation in the superconducting parameters. In a humid atmosphere, a single-phase 2223 sample did not show any decomposition whereas single-phase 2212 or mixed-phase samples showed partial degradation to Bi2CuO4, SrCO3, CaCO3 and CuO as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and EDX analysis. Based on these observations a possible degradation mechanism has been proposed and the role of Pb has been discussed.
